    Living in the tropics, I tell myself that I would be wet from sweat anyway so rain is no biggie. And it makes me feel like a "hardcore" runner as people see you and think "doesn't that clown know enough how to get out of this rain"? But it truly is a mental experience that you are happy you ran through every now and then. Exhilarating boost getting the rainy run in.

    Thanks Floris another great video packed with great advice. Looks like a typical training day for me in Ireland 🇮🇪. Having a nice reward to look forward to post run 🏃‍♂️ like a nice warm meal or epson salt bath 🛀. When really tested I think of the mantra winter miles bring summer smiles 😀

      Haha, totally know what you mean James. I grew up in The Netherlands with plenty of rain as well. Now here in Southern California it barely rains, so it feels special :) YES, those epson salt baths and post run warm meals are a good one to look forward to. Loving that mantra you mentioned as well. Stay warm! 😎

    It's definitely tough getting out in the cold AND rain. I tend to dress on the warmer side, and when I get too hot, i try to envision running on a summer day. Weird maybe, but it makes the cold less daunting because i know i'll be hot soon, and it helps me get through the long winters!

  • @quirckybaldguy

    I love these fast finish runs as well! I do them in the second half of marathon base building, leading into the tougher marathon specific long runs in the build. I try to make a game of it: every km 5 seconds faster, starting at 5:00 per km.
    As for your question about bad conditions: having the right kit does a lot already 😊 Right now it’s very cold, dark and wet here in the Netherlands. I try to see it as an opportunity: the more bad conditions I face in training, the better prepared I am for whatever race day throws at me! It’s important to enjoy training though and not be miserable out there 😊 So I try to consciously enjoy the privilege of running outside, no matter the weather!

      @FlorisGierman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cold / windy / dark running:
    For me the biggest key is having a schedule that is working towards a goal to get me out in those conditions. Having a route mapped out for the distance I need to cover is also important, so I’m not tempted to cut it short if I haven’t reached my target distance for the run(!)
    Running gloves and a long sleeve base layer are also essential for me, as it tends to be my arms and hands that need something extra - the rest of me is generally alright. If all else fails, plenty of arm pumping gets the blood flowing!..helps get up those hills too!

    • @FlorisGierman

Cold, dark (and wet) days in the UK is not attractive always to run.....but, so long as I have an answer to my Why? - why do I choose to run - I am usually fine with the winter training. • @FlorisGierman
      @FlorisGierman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a lot more to MAF training than just the run/walk component. Yes, it can take time to improve aerobically, however I'd also take a close look at your nutrition, stress levels, sleep and recovery too.
      Some athletes improve their MAF pace quickly, while for others go backwards first and don't see progress for 3-6+ months. If you're not progressing after 6 months, something is off.
      Everything is connected.

      Thanks for sharing another fantastic video of a run in the rare rainy day in Irvine. I moved from Irvine to Seattle area a few years ago, and it's pretty normal to run in the drizzle rain here. Also, it gets dark so early during winter, like around 4:30 pm.
      There's a popular expression in Korea, "Whether it's raining or snowing day, I will keep doing what I promised to do every day" which to me it's a mantra of determination, consistency, and grit. So, whenever it's raining or snowing outside, I tell myself it's another opportunity to keep my promise regardless of the situation. It's a path to finding my badass self.

    It might sound funny, but my hands tend to bother me worse than anything in the rain, especially if the weather is a little cool (40-60 degrees Fahrenheit), so I usually wear gloves, even if I’m wearing short sleeves and shorts. I don’t care if it looks weird. It works, and I’ve found I can go out for longer and deal with bad conditions as long as I keep my hands warm.

    Cold, windy and dark running? I make sure I have enough coffee as the first priority, otherwise just bought a rain jacket and a proper headlamp which makes a huge difference.

      Coffee for the rescue, I like your style Nathan! Indeed a proper headlamp can make such a difference. Totally worth investing in a good one. Cheers!

    Running on a cold/rainy day makes you look twice as bad a$$. This is what I tell myself.

      @@FlorisGierman I am a huge fan of maf training, especially when I experienced positive health benefits while training and not over exertion of body which I used to do earlier thinking that more pain= more gain. I also like 80/20 principal which I combine with maf 2 times a week.

    You sound European of some kind, why do you use the imperial system?

      That's right! And once warmed up that suck can turn into joy pretty quickly as well.
