Do you know, how much emphasis does China put on students, to learn English? There are hundreds of English speaking foreigners residing all over China, teaching English to students starting from the 1st grade. Ever heard of Gaocao (equivalent to NEET/JEE)? They have tests on English that students have to clear. China is competing with US and learning English will only help them compete.

Ppl blaming lack of space is totally wrong. Everyday rapidly illegal housings are being built and politicians get money out of it. Lands are encroached. Complete lack of sense. Naturally you will never have space if you never even willing to enforce the law or have a plan. We have ALL the time for hating others, blaming and abusing other religion or caste or community. Some corrections: Shanghai has been a big Metropolitain for long time. The river you crossed is not Yangtze river, it is called Huangpu river. between 1980 and 1992, China was focusing on developing Shenzhen. Central government decided to massively develop Shanghai again in 1992. Before 1992, the east side of Huangpu river were basically rural area, while the west side was urban area. After 30 years Shanghai is pretty much rebuilt and now is a super modern city. Shenzhen was very small town before 1980s. China has 3 important delta areas. One is Yangtze River Delta, it has Shanghai (26 million population), Suzhou (11 million), Wuxi (6.5 million), Changzhou (5 million), Nantong (7.7 million), even Nanjing(8.5 million) and Hangzhou(10 million), Ningbo (8 million) can be included and other smaller cities. Peral river delta, includes Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Macau, Foshan, Zhuhai and some other cities with total population of 70 million. China is investing a lot to connect all these cities to form the Grand Bay area. The third one is Bohai Economic Rim which is Yellow river delta related, it includes Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Qingdao, Jinan, Shenyang, Dalian and other cities.

In 1843, China and Britain signed the "Nanjing Treaty", and Shanghai was designated as a treaty port. Since Shanghai is located at the estuary of the Yangtze River, it is a shipping hub connecting China's inland areas and an outlet for inland areas. Therefore, Shanghai will soon replace Guangzhou as China's largest trading port. 100 years ago, Shanghai had become one of the most prosperous and largest cities in the Far East. So it is wrong to say that Shanghai was a fishing village 30 years ago.

About the Shanghai fishing village thing, he probably meant Pufong which was developed only around 1993.
A little fun facts about Shanghai Pudong.....
Pudong-literally "The East Bank of the Huangpu River"-originally referred only to the less-developed land across from Shanghai's Old City and foreign concessions. The area was mainly farmland and only slowly developed, with warehouses and wharfs near the shore administered by the districts of Puxi on the west bank: Huangpu, Yangpu, and Nanshi. Pudong was originally established as a county in 1958 until 1961 which the county was split among Huangpu, Yangpu, Nanshi, Wusong and Chuansha County. On October 1, 1992, the original area of Pudong County and Chuansha County merged and established Pudong New Area.
In 1993, the Chinese government set up a Special Economic Zone in Chuansha, creating the Pudong New Area. The western tip of the Pudong district was designated as the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone and has become a financial hub of modern China. Several landmark buildings were constructed, including the Oriental Pearl Tower, and the supertall Jin Mao Building (420.5 m or 1,380 ft), Shanghai World Financial Center (494 m or 1,621 ft) and Shanghai Tower (632 m or 2,073 ft), the world's first trio of adjacent supertall skyscrapers. These buildings-all along Century Avenue and visible from the historic Bund-now form the most common skyline of Shanghai.
On May 6, 2009, it was disclosed that the State Council had approved the proposal to merge Nanhui District with Pudong and comprise the majority of eastern Shanghai. In 2010, Pudong was host to the main venues of the Shanghai Expo, whose grounds now form a public park.
Pudong New Area consist of the original Pudong County (northeastern portion of Shanghai County), Chuansha County, and Nanhui County.

@439437 no thats not true. 90% of chinese live in eastern 1/3 of the country which is the same size as india, so most their density is not that different from india for most population. tibet, xinjiang, qinghai, inner mongolia, etc are very mountainous, desert like and only 6% of population lives there despite having more than half of china's area. india just looks more crowded because of poor planning. even small towns in india in like rajasthan look very crowded and clustered, so its not density issue. its completely poor planning on the indian side. india needs more skysrcapers like china so people grows vertically in a given area so rest of the left space can be used for other purposes.

In the film industry, Shanghai films represented Chinese films at that time, and Hong Kong did not even have a place to stand. This is because the film was born in 1895, and traveled across the ocean from France to China in the second year, and the first stop of the film in China was Shanghai. With the convergence of diverse cultures, Shanghai's film industry has rapidly developed into the leading representative in Asia, and the luxury consumption patterns such as Paramount and Racecourse have made Shanghai's entertainment industry rank third in the world. World-famous movie stars Butterfly, Ruan Lingyu, Li Lili, and hundreds of dramas and musical works that have been handed down to this day are all enough to prove the cultural status of Shanghai in the Republic of China to the world. After 1865, many gas lamps were gradually erected on the streets of the Shanghai Concession. There are iron pipes in the gas lamps. When the gas inside is ignited, it can be used as a lamp for night lighting. It is also called "ground fire" by Shanghainese. . The first gas lamp in neighboring Japan was lit in Yokohama in 1872. Around 1931, Shanghai's population reached 3.11 million, ranking first in the country and fifth in the world. By 1949, Shanghai's population had reached 5 million. From the opening of the port to the Republic of China, from the war to the liberation, the number ones in Shanghai are not only tall buildings and gas lamps, but also trams, European-style theaters, radio stations, etc. They are all number ones in China and even Asia.
