Probably the greatest segment SNL ever put on the air... Very prescient and edgy even now... Remember watching when it aired and thought it was absolutely brilliant!
They could never do something like this now, unfortunately. Too many overly-sensitive folks with no sense of humor now who bitch about EVERYTHING. I was a high school student in the 70's, and racism wasn't nearly as rampant as it is now (at least where I lived). I really think it has much to do with the fact that we were discussing racism more openly, and Norman Lear had a positive influence on that. The most popular sitcoms in that era were created by him, and they were very edgy. He wrote scripts that shone a spotlight on bigots, and the language they used. "Sanford and Son" was a great show, and wildly popular with people of all ethnicities. Redd Fox became a beloved star; strange considering he was formerly only known as a "filthy" underground comedian. The dialogue included most of the ugliest racial epithets (not bleeped out); not for a cheap laugh, but to expose those terms for what they are: stupid and hateful. Exposure has a way of taking power away from mere words, censorship gives those words undeserved attention by making them taboo.
So great because it parodied so many things. It was a spoof of the shooting of Reagan, which happened weeks before this. But then the expert says the news media wants to make these shooters famous, seconds after the expert they go wall to wall on the killer. Then they spoof Son of Sam and his dog. Then they spoof Oswald getting shot. You had to have lived thru Reagan getting shot and all the "lets look at the video tape" to really get the spoof. This segment was most of the show that week and IIRC might have been over 2 shows. The full sketch might have ran an hour. They even had the Pope gibing a eulogy in another language with subtitles. In the middle of it the subtitles said, "This was a tragedy. Maybe some of you have not seen the video tape, lets take a look......." Kind of so clever that it could not be topped.

I remember watching this as a little kid, and believing it. I was a fan of Little Rascals, and my five-ish year old self was so upset that Buckwheat had died.
The only reason I bought a VCR was for SNL so I could go out Saturday nights. lol If I remember The Buckwheat Was Shot skit ran for 3 consecutive SNL's adding more to the story like a running news event would have run a story for a multiple days. I think this would have been part 3 of the Skit.
Overlooked joke: When the criminal psychiatrist mentions that irresponsible journalists turn criminals into instant celebrities, Ted Koppel (Piscopo) begins his monologue regarding John D. Stutts....making him an instant celebrity.
When Mr Murphy found out about the real Buckwheat actor had passed away, Murphy decided to "kill off" his version of Buckwheat out of respect. A class act. Yes, he brought him back when Mr Murphy came back to SNL, but hadn't done the character after his 'death ' before then.
Except it's exactly how they covered things like Reagan's attempted assassination and attempted assassin, and the assassins of people like John Lennon and the Kennedy Brothers. And gave so much coverage to Manson. And so much more. People think shit's new when it's old.
It didn’t predict it. You must be super young. It was making fun of the coverage that had already begun with Reagan’s being shot & the hostages crisis in 79, both covered 24/7 by Ted Koppel that was how ABC Nightline started; this was just spoofing that. It didn’t predict anything it was spoofing something that was already going on then. Just like SNL does today- it didn’t predict anything.
Notice the Lee Oswald sweater. If Oswald hadn't demanded a sweater at the last minute, he would have been on his way out of the garage before Jack Ruby got there.

John David Stutts was wookin pa nub in all da wong pwaces.
And here we are again.
Eddie Murphy is a legend.
Best SNL Player ever.
Piscopo did such an awesome impression of Ted Kopel, spot on.
"And this ... is Ted Koppel."
I remember watching this as a little kid, and believing it. I was a fan of Little Rascals, and my five-ish year old self was so upset that Buckwheat had died.
Well, Buckwheat had died about a year and a half before this skit was aired, I believe.
@@kari7403 he died 3 years before this sketch.
Kids today don't know how huge & original young Eddie Murphy was. He was untouchable.
He was on another level
He was the Michael Jackson of comedy.
Did you kill buckwheat? Sure lol 😂
John David Stutts, sound like Norbert. 🤣
I take exception to that. No, not me. It's my female Avatar (DCAU Supergirl). Don't get her too upset.
Norbit wasn't out of it like JDS. He had more energy. 😀
I’ve never seen them in the same place at the same time.....

What a NIghtmare your Brothers friend endured. Good on him for being productive but really tragic.

Overlooked joke: When the criminal psychiatrist mentions that irresponsible journalists turn criminals into instant celebrities, Ted Koppel (Piscopo) begins his monologue regarding John D. Stutts....making him an instant celebrity.
Joke divided by you =
I was a kid who used to watch the little rascals. When i watched this live, me and my brother couldn't stop laughing. Absolutely hilarious
This is fn brilliant. So subtle, true, and hilarious at the same time.
He sure was a loner, going to church, being in organisations etc... 😂
“Did you kill Buckwheat?”
“Sure!”
Hahahah
He actually died October 10, 1980. RIP: Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas.
When Mr Murphy found out about the real Buckwheat actor had passed away, Murphy decided to "kill off" his version of Buckwheat out of respect. A class act. Yes, he brought him back when Mr Murphy came back to SNL, but hadn't done the character after his 'death ' before then.
@@geraldstephens6612 That's an interesting footnote. Thank you.
@@geraldstephens6612 in actuality, the real Buckwheat was gone even before Eddie Murphy started doing the character.
Hilarious how this predicted 24 hour news coverage. lol
CNN was launched on June 1, 1980, so no, they didn't "predict" it.
ssjup81 Exactly!!
@@ns2110theonly Nope. I wasn’t born. I started elementary school during Reagan’s second term. lol. My 2nd grade class wrote letters to him.
Thomas Matthew Crooks! 😂
Who’s here after Eddie Murphy’s return to SNL?

Nashville Boss Yup

Notice the Lee Oswald sweater. If Oswald hadn't demanded a sweater at the last minute, he would have been on his way out of the garage before Jack Ruby got there.
Buckwheat is ETERNAL! You cannot kill a LEGEND!!!
Buckwheat’s killer sounds like Norbit 😂😂😂
Eddie was one of the greatest on SNL.
Yes he was. In 1985 that's when I stopped watching SNL it was no good without the not ready for prime time players, and Eddie Murphy.
1. Eddie Murphy
2. John Belushi
3. Dan Aykroyd
@@thecawdsquad875 4. Hartman
5. Myers

I'd put him slightly second behind Dana Carvey as my favorite
"Did you kill Buckwheat?" Sure. "You realize you're going to face the death penalty?" I don't care sir.
"That's all he ever talked about."
Prefect spoof of Lee Harvey Oswald
Oswald/JFK/Jack Ruby, Son of Sam and Reagan , watch it again, you'll see it.
And Mark David Chapman
@countrygirl countrymusiclover They blended all 4 shootings into the one that killed Buckwheat
The spoofing of the reporting is so real it's sad!
And John Hinckley Jr.
The gas prices really stood out.
I was just thinking that. I remember when gas was less than $2.
That $1.29 in 1983(Time of this SNL) is $3.38 in todays dollar.
Me too
That was a few years after the gas crisis. You could fill a tank with 10 dollars.
I'm so dang old, I remember when a gallon of gas and a pack of cigarettes cost about the same; @ 30 cents! A brand new Ford Mustang with a V-8 cost less than $3000 in 1965. Of course, the average wage then was only @ $3.00 and minimum wage was $1.25.
I remember screaming hysterical watching this very unexpected skit… pure comedy and humor never will there be such fun as the early SNL show … a must watch every week in homes and neighborhood bars you could hear the laughter roar soo very genius it was .
Watching right after eddie hosted in 2019 .. still funny
HEY MR WHEAT!!!!

Truly a sad day for the world. RIP Buckweat!
The Our Gang curse.
“Ouch!! I’m shot!”

I will never forget being a little girl watching this with my sister. My mother heard the tv came in the room and she asked us who is Buckwheat we burst out laughing 😂😂😂
The news reporter looks like Elton John
Ahmaud Hines literally what I was thinking. It’s definitely the haircut
I like that all of these sketches used to have really good social critiques and a reflection on society
That's what great comedy does.
This was when people, including kids, stayed up to watch SNL
So true! Great memory. I was in 9th grade when this first aired.
well yeah. we have DVRs and internet video on demand now. why stay up late and be exhausted tomorrow when you can watch the full show anytime you want?
Some of us had recorders and wanted to stay up late to watch what Eddie did regardless. That's the difference.
@@tobro3000 to be fair those VCR recorders were a pain to program on a timer.

The punchline of this entire bit was "And now, two famous men lie dead ..."
This sketch predicted the news cycle future 😳😳😳😳
It sadly did.
Not at all. You missed the point completely.
They were making fun of when Reagan was shot. The media kept showing it over and over. I guess that applies to everything now.
This is actually what happened when Reagan got shot
It was 1983. I was 7. And I'll never forget that night. 'Cause I really thought he died.
Facts! My sister was crying and everything!
Buckwheat really did die 3 years before this sketch but i get it as kids no one was really told right away I’d assume- made more ironic since all the same kids got to stay up and watch SNL ( not that I’m making fun of this fact- i think SNL is the honestly only helpful to kids between making the news relevant to them, funny even or at least ironic, and the proof in what hard work and a great sense of humor can do its my favorite show no matter what age and i show my kiddo skits now too on TH-cam )
one of the greatest bits snl ever did
This is sick and freaking hilarious and too true
It's a parody of the Reagan assignation coverage in 1981.
and John Lennon..even more so
Like everyone else at that time, I remember exactly where I was when they announced that Buckwheat was shot and killed, in front of my TV on a Saturday night.
