  • There are four Atlantic islands in the Macaronesia ecoregion: the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago; Cape Verde, an independent African nation; and two separate autonomous islands of Portugal: Azores and Madeira. This documentary covers all but the Canaries. It is broken into three main chapters and three minor (vignette) chapters.

Because there is a set of small Micronesian islands in the Pacific, some of which LMM has filmed, like our two series' covering Guam, the Marshalls, Palau, the FSM and the Marianas, many assume there must be a macronesia (a large set of islands) somewhere in the world. (See the two series here: • Marshall Islands (Amer... , and here: • American Samoa (Americ... )
But the word Macaronesia has a completely different etymology and meaning from macronesia. Taken from the ancient Greek word, makárōn nêsoi, mentioned in Homer’s 8th Century BC work, the Odyssey, it refers to a semi-legendary place known as Isles of the Blessed, or the Fortunate Isles, a paradise reserved for special deities who were pure enough to gain entrance to the Elysian Fields.
Some say the islands were a mythical place, others say they were known. Today, the islands have been named Macaronesia in light of this Greek legend.
Is the ancient Greek mythology true? Could these islands truly be the legendary Isles of the Blessed, the Greek's Elysium, or possibly the ancient City of Atlantis?

You sound familiar with the Azores. If I may ask, how much $ for a decent fixer upper (but habitable while renovating)...maybe 2 bedrooms, 1 full bath, with some land...not a crowded area?
      Thanks!!

@@clairelivefreeordie2551 I am not familiar with the Açores at all as I am from and in mainland Portugal. I can tell you that it depends on the Island you choose, the location of the property, if oceanview, land or lot size, # of rooms, if you want a condo or a house, and houses are more expensive. In some islands you might get a small house for 75.000€ as a fixer upper or even less, but habitable might be a stretch. Then again, depending on where you decide to live ( there are 9 islands to choose from) u might get a bigger house with old world architectural details for €150.000 or less that can still be habitable, but those are not easy to find. Getting qualified construction personnel could be an issue and a hassle. We are short on professionals in the mainland more so in the islands. They are also often - not- professional at all compared to North Americam business standards, although they might know their stuff; something similar to what you find in Italy. Get ready to be told you one thing and find something else. Also returning phone calls is not their forte, so you have to hound them. Same for contractors. You have to hound them for estimates, commitments, etc. Ex: I have been waiting since Dec. 2020 to fix my bath. Cannot find available and qualified help with decent prices, and I am 1 hr north of Lisbon. Unless you are handy at construction or in house repairs , I would shell out a bit more to get something that you don't need to worry about converting or repairing, especially if you do not speak Portuguese. Suggest you get in contact with a realestate agent, and my suggestion is, as agents here are not of the caliber you find in the US. They don't pick up phones, return calls only when they feel like it, so I would deal only with Remax or ERA. They seem to be the more reliable, professional. and knowledgeable, as well as being larger companies, they have more inventory. Also, go over to look before committing.
Good luck, the Açores are well worth it.

@La Mancha Media you can use bathymetric data to search for the submerged parts of the Azores. The Azores plateau was said to have been much higher than now due to the lower sea level (about 100-150m) and two the high magmatic pressure below the plateau which wasl high compared to now, acting as an engine diverging the plates away. Atlantis could have been submerged because the magmatic pressure below the plateau decreased as the earth aged, In the past it was also called the navel of the earth, the seed point at which Pangea our ancient supercontinent spread out from. There a channel on yt about this if you'd like more info #1: Atlantis - Found in the Azores
Amazing captivating video btw..keep it up!

That man at the spring who asked ‘do a lot of people bring their wives here’ so they’ll look 10 years younger…this man has the opportunity to see one of the most beautiful places on earth and is still a disgusting and ungrown foreskin. How sad.
