    Trying my best to put a sportster front end on the Yamaha xs650 chopper! It's the same process as putting a harley springer front end on an xs650. I'm a little worried about the small amount of bearing that's showing but otherwise it feels solid! Lemme know if y'all have any suggestions, till next time... keep it weird #shadetreearmy #yamha #xs650 #chopper

    Im running a 2 under narrow springer on my xs with a 1 inch stem. I ran custom 1 inch tapered bearings with the tapered races and didn’t have to chop my neck at all, did have to make a custom spacer though...also running a 21 Harley front wheel with spool hub.. definitely a death trap with no front brake.. this channel is rad as fuck!

  • @stevegrim

    Grind the weld from the bottom of the Yamaha triple trees and press out the steerer tube. Do the same to the HD triple trees and press the Yamaha tube into the HD lower tree. You might need to get a spacer made up or possibly turn down the bottom of the Yamaha tube to make it fit.Reweld and refit with original bearings without butchering your frame. Oops, too late.

    "A package that shouldn'tve been made."
    It's what I love the most about motorcycles. Whether your buying them or building, there is at no point a need for a rational explanation.
    It's one remaining area where "because why the fuck not!?" is an acceptable answer.

    Someone else may have mentioned this already but one trick I learned for putting in those bearings is to put them in the freezer for an hour or two before you put them in. When metal is cold it contracts just a little and that's all you really need. Tap them in with a rubber mallet in a circular pattern and they should go right in. If anyone else has a better way of doing it let me know because I've been using this trick for a while.

  • @dustinanderson7285
    @dustinanderson7285 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Grab a big rat tail file from the pawn shop and use the flat side to straiten the engine side of the neck tube, then the round side to clean up the inside. You may have to go bearing shopping to find something that will work. For your mock up. I am not a builder and I know nothing, but I agree that the current set up isn't going to work. Or ask the guy who builds motorcycles for a living. But clean up the part that you cut.

    The Sportster Front End is a Great Upgrade but the Best Part of the XS650 is the King and Queen Seat. So Old School 60's-70's Chopper. Everytime I see it I think I'm going to see Hells Angels on Wheels, or The Cycle Savages on a Friday night at my Local Theater. They just don't make Movies Like They used too. Roger, Vista, Ca

  • @morningstarx5340
    @morningstarx5340 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It could be that you cut just a bit too much off of the neck. But with that being said, I feel like you could probably nudge that bearing in a bit more with a rubber mallet. Or maybe the bearing is slightly too big in diameter.

    I used to have a Honda GL500, which is a CX500 dressed up with a Goldwing fairing and touring luggage. THAT was a weird bike. And it's becoming even weirder now as the current owner has it all chopped up for a custom build. I literally didn't recognize my old frame in the shop until someone pointed it out to me. The next time I saw him I yelled "What the hell did you do to my motorcycle?!?!" :D

    Shadetree, awesome job on the build. Not many will attempt this on their own. You are just learning for the next one. I am a heavy equipment mechanic by trade. I mess with old bikes on the side. Watching you putting on the front end, I noticed you used a grade 5 bolt. My opinion, for what it's worth, I would use a grade 8. Have been watching your vids. from almost the beginning.
