My wife and I lived in Shetland for 10 years from 1974-1984. The younger two of our three bairns were born in Shetland. It's an amazing place! We lived in Trondra, the small island just to the south of Scalloway harbour. I taught in Scalloway Junior High School and our bairns started school in the SJHS Primary department. It's all a long time ago, but Shetland still has a very important place in my heart!
Please do a video on the Orkney isles, my home. So much history to cover! Knap of howar (possibly the oldest surviving stone settlement in Northern Europe), Skara brae, Ring of Brodgar, Maeshowe, tomb of the Eagles, dozens of Iron Age Brochs, Pictish stone carvings, the legend about the Picts first settlement in Scotland, the arrival of the vikings, the earldom of Orkney, the Battle of Papdale, scapa flow in both world wars and loads more to discover aswell :) also loads of nice pubs and restaurants to sample some of our local food and whisky
I worked in Shetland for a year in the early 1980's. BP were building an oil and gas terminal at Sullom Voe. We use to go to Lerwick sometimes at the weekend. Found the locals very friendly and they don't like to be called Scottish but Shetlanders.
History of Shetland in 10 Minutes? Impossible! I had to keep multiple browser tabs open to learn more about all the wonderful places you visited. Those Shetlanders got much more than their money's worth. Tech notes: So happy to see it in 4K; writing/camera/drone/editing/production work was best ever!

I have travelled vicariously this year to: England, Germany, Edinburgh, Orkney, Shetland, Glasgow. I can't wait to see more of this world! Thanks Bruce for being an informative tour guide.
A great intro video to one of my favourite places. I spent over a month visiting the historical sites in the Shetlands and didn't even scratch the surface. How about an episode about the Shetland Bus of WW2 an heroic campaign that deserves a wider audience? That's after you've done the Mousa broch and the Jarlshof sites, of course. Too much for one lifetime? Well, maybe.
Could the hidden chest (11:23 in the video) be the lost treasure in Egil's saga? It was said to contain silver and was buried approximately from 850-1000AD. This time would have had silver objects from the 8th century. He could have given the silver chests to his servants to bury as a blind old man. The chests were said to be in a land where "cairn fires are often seen"--and Shetland I'm told is full of cairns. Both the silver containing chests and the servants were never seen again. So, they may have travelled in the direction towards England--often mentioned in the Saga. They could have buried the fabled lost chest of silver in Shetland?
My bucket list just got so much longer I had to staple another sheet of paper to the bottom of it to make more room. Brilliant video. Your excitement is palpable, and completely justified!
Another great episode.Thank you for making it and sharing it. I have an Irish background but am very interested in all the Celtic history of Britain and Ireland and the Isle of Man. Your channel is the best for Scottish history and your style of presenting the history is perfect.
@@davidgreen6490 yes indeed. But in all honesty I don't know much about the Celtic peoples of Britain and Ireland. Any information is exciting to me. Are there any books about this or websites? I didn't mention England because I was referring to the Celtic peoples and the English people had different origins but I do realise that Celtic people lived all over Britain but I thought they were forced away or moved from what we know as England or were assimilated into the new arrivals into England. So yes, I would love to know about the Celts in England. Boudicca was a Celt and has such an interesting story. I live in England on the Midlands so Celtic history from there would be particularly of interest to me. As you can tell I don't know much about the Celts in Britain and Ireland which is why I love this TH-cam channel about Scottish history. History in general interests me.

Funnily enough I was going to ask you to do a video about Shetland. Great timing! I've been watching the tv show and I've been trying to learn more about this island.
My great grandfather William Joseph Moodie was from Weisdale in Shetland, he was born in 1869, & I have visited Shetland 5 times & it's well worth visiting. I went to Shetland in 1983, 1984, 1987, 2003 & 2004 & I travelled by ferry from Aberdeen each time, which is a 12 hour journey. I attended Up Helly Aa in January 2003, & it was quite a spectacle, & I recommend it to others. William Joseph's son Noel Thompson Moodie visited Shetland in 1974, along with his 2 sons Jo Moodie & Micheal Moodie & they all thoroughly enjoyed their stay.
Although there are remnants and some impressive remains like Mousa Broch, the arrival of our Nordic ancestors swamped and smothered Shetland like a wave. Some so-called experts speak about the "Norse era" but the reality is we're still here(btw Up-Helly-Aa is a joke). My first ancestor is a man from Unst in 1450 called Hendrich Hendrichsson and hundreds of other Shetlanders can trace their family trees back to Norse ancestors. I'm glad you spoke about the oppression we suffered at the hands of a certain class of obnoxious scots as they clawed our land into their hands because it was truly a dark, dark chapter. The Old Norse name for Shetland is Hjaltland and there's a fjord that leads into Bergen called Hjeltefjorden. It simply means "the fjord to Shetland" or "the Shetland fjord".
Depends on what you mean with Up Helly Aa as a joke. Is it 'a tractional Viking ceremony'? No, it's a Victorian fancy, but it has become a cultural facet. Is is a joke in that people hold so preciously to all the jarls being male and basically needing to be related o someone to get in? Yeah, that's a joke.

Great video, brother! My mother's family came from Weisdale and I've always had an tremendous interest in my genealogy--Hunter, Georgeson, Anderson, Law, Irvine, et al.
Yes Bruce, I’ve been to Shetland. Lived there in fact, worked on the infamous “White Hoose” building for SIC. Lived there happily for 18 months first on Commercial Street in Lerwick, then moved in to board with friends in Bressay. A veteran of 3 Up Helly Aa’s now and have climbed all round the island (mainly sea cliffs). Not been back in about 10 years, but the place and it’s people have a special place in my heart. I’m from Newcastle upon Tyne and loved every minute of living and working there.
Kiwi here.My dad is from Scotland.I like learning little and different snippets of history as apposed to great long lectures and old mate here is just the ticket. I never considered the Highland clearances took hold on the island too so thats something I'd like to learn more about now

Bruce Fummey is an amazing story teller! He has some wonderful stories on his channel, wish there was more of him in the vid. BTW hearing Scottish kingmaking explained gave me such Crusader Kings II (PC game) vibes; pretty accurate with how it works in the game!
As a student nurse I was on placement with a district nurse based in Brae, covering up to Yell and Unst. She drove like a Finnish rally champion. Great craic.
I saw you walking past st giles cathedral with your crew yesterday, Bruce! Looking forward to seeing what history you cover in the capital city. All the best. Michael. 👋
I am so looking forward to yet another vlog of Shetland. A very interesting place to visit. I’ve never been to Europe, Bruce, but would love to visit all of Scotland, including Shetland. The history in your areas is so interesting as actually that is where a lot of Americans stem from, when you think of it. all over Europe, especially the eastern parts of Europe, from the far south up to far north.
Well done for all you do, Bruce you are easy to listen to but most importantly you are not afraid to take criticism if you’re not exactly right I applaud you
I was in Shetland for work during tight COVID restrictions and was surprised by how flat it was, having been to Skye. It was still striking though, and the light is different and more changeable than anywhere else I’ve been.I also had a wonderful curry in a Nepalese restaurant in Lerwick. Why was there one hat on a shelf in the car hire office and nothing else? Do they also do heid attire hire?
Wow...Bruce, That was exceptional!...I relate specifically to this due to my heredity from my mum, I took on 49% of her full blooded Norwegianism with an addition 25% Swedish character. When I was born and on me dads side, Irish @14% and Scottish @ 12%, though the numbers are but numbers I feel a kinship to all these things and thank you and the Shetland folk for inviting you to such a wonderful rich place to share with us here. Rock till you drop my friend, Break some legs!
Thank you for sharing your marvelous knowledge in such an interesting way! Your way of telling me a Story truly holds my attention throughout! I believe you should be recognized to a greater degree for your works.
I have a ring that was made in Shetland based on a treasure trove find that the local people hid from the Vikings before they conquered the island, I would like to visit Shetland one day and go to the Viking festival.
Another great and informative video! The age of those first walls dividing farming plots shows how much we still have to learn about the complexity of what we refer to as “primitive” societies. And what a rich historical tapestry the Shetlands preserve! Thank you for showing it.
I'm from Australia, and after watching this and Shetland. I would like to visit more. My friend keep asking when I visit Scotland again and Possibly Shetland.
I want to go!!! I really enjoyed the TV murder mystery series set in Shetland called Shetland. My sister and I think that the area is quite pretty! Now with you explaining the history of the place!!! It is a quite an inviting idea!!!! Thank you!
Was in Shetland last year and it was great to see many of the places I visited in this video(Unst...wow!). I've been to many of the Scottish islands and they're very...well,Scottish. S'cool. Therefore very surprised not to see one St.Andrews Cross but tons of the Nordic cross (and a couple of (ironic? )Union Jacks!) in Shetland.Just post covid so most of the pubs weren't open...loved to have had that conversation with a local ! Bloody brilliant place and bloody brilliant videos.Cheers!
I'm looking forward to the new TV show, It's always sunny in Shetland staring Bruce! Lots of really interesting information and I'm looking forward to the rest of the videos.

Been to Shetland twice. Absolutely love the islands . The Broch at moussa is definitely the highlight. Interestingly enough the most southerly Broch is near Denny where I live. Great overview of the history . Keep up the good work
We visited Shetland & Orkney back in 2019. What a blast we had. We actually stayed in the Valley B&B where you did. When I saw it on your video I had to double-check. We highly recommend it as a base to explore "the end of the earth". You must eat at Frankie's Fish & Chips! Fantastic grub fresh out of the sea! I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos! I'm first-generation American off Scottish parents who emigrated back in 1951. Great job Bruce. Keep up the great work pal!
I've only been to Shetland once, when I was a kid to visit some friends of my parents. We had a 14 hour ferry ride to get there, 9 hours of which was spent in a massive gale. I also remember my parents friends laughing at the fact my Dad always locked his car whenever he left it as they said it wasn't something they needed to. I do remember the islands being gorgeous and seeing some of the historical stuff and it was amazing. I really want to go back. Maybe next year. Thanks for the great videos, from fan in England.

I live in Canada but my roots are in Scotland. Could you do a documentary on Aberdeenshire? There are lots of ancient hill forts, standing stones, and ancient castles. I'd love to see that. You do an amazing job. I love every story
I think I've made a few up that way
@isobelpirie1823 Live shows in Canada in 2024. Shows in Halifax, Annapolis, New Glasgow, Moncton, Montreal, Perth , Ottawa, Toronto, Fergus, Seaforth, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria. Most of the details are here. www.brucefummey.co.uk/shows.aspx
I was in the Shetland Isles in 2013. Lovely amazing place with wonderful people ❤️
Love Shetland, have visited twice. Leaves an impression on the soul.
I think this is my #1 video 👍. What an exciting and adventurous opportunity for you and the Shetlands! Such historical gems every where you turn.💗
It's an incredible place
I love this channel!!! It's like having a conversation with that Aunt, who teaches you something new, with each conversation.
Stick with Auntie Brucie
@@ScotlandHistoryTours 😅 you're awesome.
Thank you so much for sharing this interesting video. From a friend in the forests of the Pacific Northwest coast- much appreciated!
You're welcome
Double English Bruce I just love it when one of your videos drops, they are always entertaining and informative.
Ah thanks Martin... and fuck off, I'm Scottish
Hing on! We awe seen the evidence 🤣🤣🤣
Class mate as always 🏴
Ah thanks Connor
Great video, brother! My mother's family came from Weisdale and I've always had an tremendous interest in my genealogy--Hunter, Georgeson, Anderson, Law, Irvine, et al.
Was there back in august of 2021. Working on moving there. Freakin love it. My Norwegian heritage settled there on their way to the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴.
I have been to Shetland twice and can’t wait to be able to get back.
Kiwi here.My dad is from Scotland.I like learning little and different snippets of history as apposed to great long lectures and old mate here is just the ticket.
I never considered the Highland clearances took hold on the island too so thats something I'd like to learn more about now
There are several videos on Highland Clearances on the channel. In fact there's one back in the day that I recorded in Dunedin. Hopefully heading back down your way next year
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Wrapped to hear from you :) I live in the South of nz. Scottish people always immigrate to the coldest wettest part of any new country they move to!
Hopefully I can find the doco you filmed in Dunedin.
I hope to be down there again in April
John, here's the link for Dunedin live shows. I'd be really grateful if you'd help by spreading the word far and wide Let's fill this place www.dunedinfringe.nz/events/stories-of-scotland
I'm also doing gigs in Christchurch this weekend and Auckland at the end of the month
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Hey,sure. I'll try and make it to see you.I live 2 hours away on the South coast, though around when your show is I may be working 3 hours north in Ashburton. Thanks for the heads up
For sure I'll spend many days visiting all of Shetland! Thank you!
I have visited Shetland chasing family history. Fantastic place to visit. I have developed an admiration for my ancestors. If you ever get a chance go.😊
I was born in Shetland so I had to watch!
So glad you showed St. Ninian's, it's a place where my Sooth-Moother come Shetlander Gran always said "was the closest place to heaven on Earth"
Aye bonny
My family is from Shetland I lived in Shetland as a child and worked in Shetland sadly I was in Shetland in May for my uncles funeral it is an amazing place and go back every year pretty much I’ll probably go back to shetland to live when I retire at some point anyone reading this go to Shetland it is amazing 🏴🏴🏴🏴
It's like time traveling listening and watching you make histiry come alive
That's what we try to do
Really beautiful video, Lord Bruce! The Shetlanders should rightly be pleased! Thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bruce Fummey is an amazing story teller! He has some wonderful stories on his channel, wish there was more of him in the vid.
BTW hearing Scottish kingmaking explained gave me such Crusader Kings II (PC game) vibes; pretty accurate with how it works in the game!
Thank you for all your videos. I get to tour Scottland through your eyes. Wonderful❤
The timing of this video is suberb as soon i'll be visiting Shetland. And something already tells me i'll regreat only chosing 3 days for the visit.
Aye, it's not enough
As a student nurse I was on placement with a district nurse based in Brae, covering up to Yell and Unst.
She drove like a Finnish rally champion.
Great craic.
Love it ❣️Thank you❣️Tell us more about The Shetlands🙏🏻
Yes thank you thank you 👍
I saw you walking past st giles cathedral with your crew yesterday, Bruce! Looking forward to seeing what history you cover in the capital city. All the best. Michael. 👋
There's a video about Edinburgh Fringe coming out on Saturday
I pitched my tent in Staneydale Temple last year for a night or two. Very good spot indeed!
You should come
I'm looking forward to more videos about Shetland. Amazing storytelling as always. On my bucket list to visit for sure.
More to come!
Beautiful scenery, and national treasure! ❤️
It really is!
You’re a bloody legend mate!
Well done for all you do, Bruce you are easy to listen to but most importantly you are not afraid to take criticism if you’re not exactly right I applaud you
Oh shit who's criticising ?
I was in Shetland for work during tight COVID restrictions and was surprised by how flat it was, having been to Skye. It was still striking though, and the light is different and more changeable than anywhere else I’ve been.I also had a wonderful curry in a Nepalese restaurant in Lerwick. Why was there one hat on a shelf in the car hire office and nothing else? Do they also do heid attire hire?
The olso have crew buses 17 seaters for hire if you go up with a few of you
@kevinhand 😂😂
Love watching this as a Shetlander :) !
This is fabulous💚 Thank you, Bruce! I can't wait to visit Shetland and look forward to more of your tour videos.
Glad you enjoy it!
You are beyond amazing. Never a dull moment. You make history come alive. Thank you🙏❤️👍
Wow, thank you Benita
I've been waiting for a video like this about Shetland! 10 points man
Thank you sir
Love Shetland. Stayed in Lerwick twice. Music is awesome.
This was very interesting as usual.
Brilliant Bruce, great video and Shetland looks incredible. Cheers.
Appreciate your interesting and fun video! Slainte!
💙🏴💙
Thanks
Thank you for sharing your marvelous knowledge in such an interesting way! Your way of telling me a Story truly holds my attention throughout! I believe you should be recognized to a greater degree for your works.
Wonderful!
Cheers Gerard
Well done Bruce on landing the Shetland gig...
Great trip
We're happy to be going with you Bruce!
😘
I'm from Australia, and after watching this and Shetland. I would like to visit more. My friend keep asking when I visit Scotland again and Possibly Shetland.
Brilliant
You and me both!
well done....as I advised before I went back for the first time in 100 years since my family left the islands...great place...caught up with a third cousin and some family..
could not understand what they were saying when talking about what they did for the day..heheh great fun..hope you enjoyed your stay..regards kevin
Looks like a lot to see up there , must go soon , you were lucky with the weather and not blowing a hoolie !
...and the rest of the country in a heat wave
Been in Shetland since I’ve been a bairn only 12 years ago but… I don’t think I’m ever going to leave 🤩🤩
Such interesting history!! Thank you so much for bringing these stories to life!
Our pleasure!
About time Brucie, surprised you’ve not been snapped up already by some of the big hitters like the BBC. Best channel on Scottish history, you’re the antithesis of the likes of Neil Oliver (which probably answers my previous question) Keep up the great work comrade! 🙂👍
😂😂😂 Aye mibbye
Neil Oliver lives in my hometown. He's a right miserable git.
Great video mate what an incredible place! 👍🏴
Thank You. ❣️🕊💓🕊
Loved this posting Bruce. Still waiting for Henry St Claire. A century before Columbus.
Been to Shetland twice. Absolutely love the islands .
The Broch at moussa is definitely the highlight.
Interestingly enough the most southerly Broch is near Denny where I live.
Great overview of the history .
Keep up the good work
Shetland has always been on my bucket list - and this video just gave me the much needed kick up the backside to start saving up!
Brilliant
We visited Shetland & Orkney back in 2019. What a blast we had. We actually stayed in the Valley B&B where you did. When I saw it on your video I had to double-check. We highly recommend it as a base to explore "the end of the earth". You must eat at Frankie's Fish & Chips! Fantastic grub fresh out of the sea! I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos! I'm first-generation American off Scottish parents who emigrated back in 1951. Great job Bruce. Keep up the great work pal!
Another brilliant story.. thank you..
Glad to inspire
Amazing. Can't wait to see your video on Jarlshof, Bruce.
Fantastic!
I'll need to get a weekend away to Shetland. Aye and I might just bring the family, and a fishing rod.🎣 👌
