I'd say they're the way to go, period. At least for brothers you have built up for it. If you manage to level up their melee defense to a good base level, perks like Reach Advantage and others will be amazing. I have guys whose melee defense is around 30-40 without a shield, and then they get dodge and reach advantage bonuses on top of that.
Hey man, sorry it took me so long to reply, I'm not much of a pro TH-camr. But, yeah, as the other guy said, 2H weapons are the way to go. Orcs have very strong armor and your 1H swords and spears will simply not work against them. You NEED to be able to deal large amounts of damage to their armor and you do that by using 2H weapons and 1H hammers. The FIghting axe is still useful, since it's the best "all arounder" IMO, but it's not optimal for dealing with orcs. The bottom line is simple: against orcs you need high armor damage. 1H swords and spears are F'ing useless.
