- The Tolpuddle Martyrs were a group of 19th century Dorset farm labourers who were arrested and convicted for forming a trade union in the 1830s.
They were found guilty and transported to Australia
They became popular heroes and eventually all but one were released due to popular opposition to their draconian treatment.
(the song 'Tolpuddle Man' by Graham Moore) • Video
Excellent piece on these unlikely but worthy heroes. See also the film Comrades.
Credit must be given to Nigel Costley, retired South West TUC Secretary, for his support to establish the Tolpuddle Festival which has become a three day annual event on a par with the Durham Miners Gala. My old union the NUAAW (National Union of Agricultural and Allied Workers) previously organised a march on a Sunday in July each year to commemorate the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Now we have a three day Workers Festival with music, theatre and political debate atTolpuddle.
bless them
ive been the museum today. be prepaired to walk around the town.
Actually being transported wasn't all bad - my ancestors came in chains - were decent well behaved villains and were soon given the good old 'ticket of leave' and some land in sydney town they married and had a family- set up a pub and did very well - something that would never have happened in England to poor people
“Oh great grand daddy walked along the street with a ball and chain around his feet
And that’s the way they’d like to see me walk just to give the toffs a chance to talk
And the more they try to keep me down the better I’ll live in Sydney town
