so only works with ethernet-connected cameras. won't work with a g3 instant for example, which connects over wifi.

That's not the case, it works with any Ubiquiti camera (except the AI ones) that are on your network. Simply plug in the AI Port to your network and assign it the camera you want to use such as the G3 instant.

So a $435 (AUD) AI-Port to plug into my $235.00 (AUD) HikVision camera to still get less than half the features the camera does natively ... hrmmm ...

Apparently future update will support 5 cameras off one ai port. If true then it's worth it. We can hope.
