- I had a lot of fun making this, I based it around gracieon's RWBY AMVs. I love Ironwood's character, he's definitely one of my favorites. I kinda wanna make more videos like this, but I don't have a lot songs that I know that I can work with when doing a character arc AMV. Shoot me some songs in the comments if you know any. And recommend some characters I could; strictly RWBY only.

Ironwood's voice acting is fking spectacular in season 7. The way he shouts "loyalty always matters" gives me chills. You can hear the betrayal and desperation.
James deserved better, he deserved so much better than what he got

Ironwood has had a lot of shortcomings, but the man is just doing his best.
It's just, he's had a lot of bad days. He's still trying to be the good guy, he's just been pushed into a corner and is deciding to shoulder a burden that would crush a normal man.
It's always been taking its toll. His body is testament to that, I feel.

Not when hate and other negative emotions caused from 'protecting' them are what attracts Grimm more so with Mantle's wall broken ad not being repaired.

I believe this applies to Ironwood's situation the most. He is doing what is by far the best call he could make.
I have run through as many scenarios as possible myself and I have to say that this is undoubtedly the best course of action he could take. Right now he is operating with little to nothing. Everyone is against him and he is doing what he can and saving who he can. And team RWBY is standing in the way. They don't like it but it is the best choice right now.
“Those who are heartless…..Once cared Too much.” Ironwood cared too much for his kingdom and friends and in the end was betrayed.
As for team rwby one quote comes to mind. “The trouble with loyalty to a cause...is that the cause will always betray you."

Just realized Ironwood is a metaphor for the Tin Man (Tin Woodman) from the Wizard of Oz
Yup.
Pretty much all the headmasters are based off of characters from the Wizard of Oz, that we’ve seen.
Obviously Ozpin is the wizard, Ironwood is the Tin man, and Lionheart(?) is the Cowardly lion.
Interestingly, the downfalls of each headmaster seems to correlate to the things that each of the characters are missing in that story. Lionheart succumbed to Salem because he lacked courage, and Ironwood is playing right into her hands because he doesn’t have a heart. (which makes him sound a lot more blatantly evil than he actually is, but my point stands.)
And of course, though Ozpin hasn’t exactly “fallen,” his all-encompassing secrecy is somewhat similar to the way the Wizard himself is a facade.
Qrow is the scarecrow, he has no direction and Vacuo's headmaster is named Theodore = Dorothy. Though Oscar might be Dorothy with his red boots.
Oz = The Wizard of Oz
Theodore = Scarecrow (he's described as one with a big heart, but not a lot of brains)
Leonardo = Lion (a cowardly lion)
James = The Tin man
So that means the Shade Academy the headmaster is the Scarecrow who lacks a brain

Both men entirely convinced what they're doing is right and have full confidence in themselves, even though they are clearly being manipulated by much more cunning beings (though not directly in Ironwood's case.) Similar indeed
YES!!! I really love both of them and keep telling people they’re not completely evil.. just misguided in some ways but still amazing characters! ☺️
@@sablebranwen2539 One could argue that Ironwood is being manipulated by his own position within too much power and control. Before V7, he had been extremely responsible within his position, taking the time to make calculated and sensical choices. Even if he did sometimes go a little overboard (ie bringing too many ships to Beacon during the Vytal Festival), there was always an inherent agreeable logic to his decision. Yeah, he brought all those ships because in his mind, he can't be too careful when so much is on the line, he just forgot to consider what the common people would think of his decision. During Volumes 7 and 8, as the threat levels increase, Ironwood begins taking less and less factors into account with his decisions, and his logic isn't lining up to sensical framing, the only way you can gage his actions is that he is acting out of desperation and because there truly was nothing that could actually stop him. He held two seats on the council, and arguably the two most powerful seats, and others trusted him enough to largely leave him unchecked. But when it was time for the others to intervene, they found that there was nothing they could do to hold Ironwood accountable, or to even get him to slow down and think more about his options for the situations he was in. Ironwood was a man without outer checks that he perceived as non-threats, and he stopped checking himself. The Ironwood we met in Volume 3 is not the same man that attempted to bomb Mantle in Volume 8, there were so many things and so many choices he made that drove him to becoming a monster who believed he was the only righteous one in a sea of imminent threats. I don't love Ironwood as a person, but I am completely infatuated with him as a character. He is one of the clearest examples of a hero falling to fascism truly because he had no one to counter him at the times when it really mattered. I wish his fall was a greater and calmer topic of discussion instead of people defending his actions without critically looking at what acts they're defending and viewing any criticism of them as a threat, essentially paralleling what went wrong with Ironwood without even recognizing it, and making anyone who wants to do an in-depth character analysis of Ironwood a target of harassment.
I guess my point got away from me a little bit, but I truly believe that James Ironwood is one of the most high-quality characters of this series, and his complexity will be missed. I can only hope that other characters who have been shown inklings of similar levels of complexity (Yang with her PTSD and past of parental neglect within a broken family, and Winter, Cinder, and Emerald as abuse victims who are all handling their traumas differently) can step up to the plate more, and their inner minds can be explored as much as Ironwood's has.
General James Ironwood may not be the hero in everyone's story, but he'll always be the hero in mine.

I use to hate and despise Ironwood, but now that I just watched this, I feel oh so terrible for him and what he's gone through. He's an amazing character and my hate has turned into love for the guy!

I liked him before volume 7 but during volume 7 my love for him gree so much. Especially that one Qrow scene made me tear up. Now it makes me cry. He's a really tragic character. Hope they don't kill him or at least not in a dishonorable way.
Volume 8 would beg to differ.

I don't think Ironwood is an extremist, nor is he a dictator/tyrant. He is a utilitarian. His actions at the end of the volume, abandoning Mantle and isolating Atlas so Salem does not obtain the Relic of Creation and Knowledge, is what he thinks will guarantee Remnant's overall safety i.e., the big picture he spoke of. This action of utilitarianism extends to his relations with Team RWBY, the Council, Robyn Hill, and even his loyalties to Ozpin. What separates him from other thinkers of this philosophy, like August Walker from MI: Fallout, or Sentinel Prime from Transfomers: DOTM, is that Walker's ideology borders on psychotic and Sentinel surrendered everything he stood for. Ironwood has not (at least not to me); he hasn't made deals with evil people nor has he endangered innocents to prove a point. He genuinely wants his world to be safe, even if it means compromising some of his morals.
Ok fair points all round but I would counter with "You can't save humanity if you have none of your own."
I too found his actions logical and beneficial to the good of the people, I agree psychotic is a good label to put on his actions. I found the series decision of whether to agree with team Rwby or Ironwood an interesting an unexpected challenge. In the end, I sided with Ironwood, he makes the most sense as far as plans go. Team Rwby is... lacking in the plans (and brains) department, idk how they'll survive this war other than guerrilla warfare. It is weird that they're allowing team Rwby to have so much emotion, emotion clouds the mind and makes even the simplest decisions vexing.

You are completely within your rights to believe that and I will admit that when all hell breaks loose morality is rarely the first thing on peoples minds. But we must TRY to maintain morality as it's meant to serve as our limiter and guide in tough times. Just as a side note I don't hate ironwood I actually kind of pity him he tried so hard to do the right thing and ended up doing the ugly but necessary thing. For me the deciding factor when the episode aired wasn't morality it was ironwoods motivation if he'd made a calm rational decision to save as many lives as possible I would have bine on his side 100% but sadly that's not the case. He made his choice based on fear and panic just as Salem wanted him to.
@@wycanygmailcom521 Team RWBY are still children. They may have fought countless battles, but they don't have the true battle experience soldiers like Ironwood and the Ace-Ops have. Ironwood's plan isn't a good one, but at least it is A plan. Just standing and not backing down from a fight can only take one so far, and honestly, you can't save everyone in life; it is naive to think you can.
You know a lot of people just let Ironwood be the villain, but I honestly respect his willpower and ability think rationally more than RWBY’s blind optimism. He said it himself, he’d do whatever it takes to stop Salem, an arm, a leg, his very humanity. I still don’t understand why from the get go RWBY was suspicious. I still don’t understand why Qrow didn’t step in and be the voice of reason when a bunch of children couldn’t see that what Ironwood did was the right choice. The most important thing for me is that given the choice to end this fight at the cost of his own life along with the lives of those he trusts most, I think he’d be the only one with the will to do it. RWBY, Qrow, JNP, Penny, all of them are too irrational. Reminds me of a scenario where two boats are sinking, one has 10 people you care about and the other has 600 strangers, you only have time to save one. RWBY would try to keep both from sinking and they would capsize.

Ironwood has got to have some form of PTSD from what happened at Beacon, among who knows how many other things. But seeing an entire school attacked, civilians, students, teachers and other staff, etc. Then multiple people are hurt and some murdered? Including, for all intents and purposes, children? No wonder he's so on edge. He's not simply paranoid, he's desperate to save everyone but can't, so he's trying even harder to save those he can but alienating some of them in the process, alienating the general public too. He's still got a heart and I believe that it's in the right place but so many more walls have been put up to try and protect it...

when you think about it he has been fighting a losing war since season 1 so with every option exhusted I understand why he went to the dark side

Actually no there is still a giant hole left where Atlas was raised out of the ground it can definitely fit back there with some wiggling to account for 80 some years of erosion.

@@IggyBitz I think their plan is more of that if they can't reunite the world they can't defeat her. If they don't save these people nobody will come together to fight Salem. Ironwood is really rational, so it makes sense why he thinks abandoning a city to save another city would be the best choice. Which it kinda is, and kinda not. But in the end Salem will either turn the people of Mantle against Atlas, or just destroy them and that will surely divide everyone in Remnant.
TyrianProtectionSquad You also have to remember that Tyrian said in volume 6 that if ironwood comes to his senses and asks for aid from Vacuo then all hope will be lost for Salem’s plans. Salem has always been trying to divide the people of remnant cause that’s the only way she knows she can be stopped. No matter how powerful she is, she can’t fight all of remnant on her own but if she divided them? She would finally have easy success and so team ruby trying to reunite the world is kind of a must. Ironwood’s heart may be in the right place, but his plan will fail eventually. Atlas can’t stay up there forever when remnant is all conquered by Salem, so standing and fighting is pretty much their only good option considering the circumstances

Honestly I hate how they treat ironwood in V7 & 8, he literally did everything and yet the main characters throw it all back in his face because "BuT mAnTlE!" As if ironwood wasn't trying to restore GLOBAL COMMUNICATION! They become so obsessed with the little picture of mantle they don't see the enormous big picture before them, and when ironwood tries to remind them that they have more important things to worry about than an election or a few dissenters, they treat him as a worse villain than Salem herself, and the way he's written in volume 8, they took away everything that made him such a fascinating character and replaced it with a fucking cartoon villain, all to make the shows "heroes" seem like they were right to mistrust him
I don't remember if I've commented on this yet but just-- I have watched this SO MANY TIMES. This is so, so, SO good and it's SUCH a good AMV For James!! The build up and the eventual CLIMAX with the audio clips is just-- JAW DROPPING. I am seriously so blown away!! This AMV is, hands down, my favorite in the entirety of the RWBY AMV's!

Poor bastard was done dirty. He was pinned in a really bad situation and gladly welcomed the help from team Rwby and friends when they arrived, who promptly decide they are going to go behind his back and screw him rather then actually helping. Finding himself cornered and alone, at the end of his wits he snapped.
This was great to watch my dude! This was a nice change of pace, and I loved every second of it. Ironwood was definitely one of my fav characters this volume surprisingly 💖

Say what you will about a lot of Rwby, but Ironwood’s character was such a fascinating fall. The tin man who was just looking for a heart, realized it would only hold him back.

I never hated Ironwood, I loved him all the way through. He is trying his best, his plan wasn't bad, just immoral. I feel like he was the best character in the last two seasons, in my opinion.

Looking back, Tyrian and Watts are both fantastic in volume 7, with Watts being great in volume 8 as well, so they might give Ironwood a run for his money in the last 2 volumes.

After watching this I side with Ironwood philosophically speaking. But I'd still back up RWBY and the others. Not for the sake of morals, but I honestly don't think leaving Mantle to fend for itself was necessary.
I agree that the relics need to be kept safe, but he could still protect Mantle at the same time.
War is like a game of chess, we are just pawns in a war we don't want we could be so much more yet we let the bored control the ground we fight on we are moved either to die or kill to be sacrificed or to take lives but I stopped being a pawn for both sides long ago, they used me like I was there blade I'm done taking orders it's time to do whats right and if that means going against both sides so be it, they both claim that there the hero but the thing about heroes is that they don't exist and there are no such things as happy endings, we're all just monsters killing monsters wasting eachothers lives and do the generals care about us.... No they only care about success, my destiny is to fail but here I am going against it, the hardest choice I made was letting go of everything: friends, family and everything else that made me happy I lost everything in order to lose nothing you can take any of my brother's but I won't surrender and I will not fall love is a weaknesses that can be weaponizined I no longer have floors that can be exploited because I removed them, I was a pawn but now I'm the board you walk on and when the board flips you must flip with it, we do what we must so others don't have to.
Good soilders follow orders but I'm not a soilder I'm the villain that wants to save the intecnet lives at what ever the cost
The hardest choice anyone can make is letting go of everything to live life already dead that way you can never be killed, betrayed or destroyed

Whilst it was a bit fast you can see the prelude to all this. His paranoia and other weaknesses were used by the villains to pit everyone against him
@@colecoal1365 Idk, it just kinda rubs me the wrong way that the whole reason Ironwood turned "evil" was because he gave into his fears/PTSD; he didn't want Atlas to become another Beacon, and he wanted to protect people AND the Relics, indirectly saving all of Remnant.
Then suddenly in Volume 8, he's irredeemable. He only cares about the plot of land that Atlas is on, shooting anyone who tries to stop him (retconing everything he stood for LAST Volume). I don't care how "set up" his turn to evil was, he didn't "turn evil" at the end of Volume 7, so Volume 8 just went full-on dictator to validate team RWBY's decisions, which weren't inherently wrong but still flawed, just liked Ironwood's philosophy.
@@garmadonthesensei59 While I have not seen the Show I honestly feel like Rooster Teeth can't write morally grey characters that pose against the main groups thoughts/moral (ex Adam going from someone who fought for the betterment of his people even if he went about it the wrong way and, and was against Cinder until she threatened to kill his men and was a mentor to Blake. to just just being an former ex to Blake all of a sudden and no longer caring about his own people even killing them when he wouldn't have before.

I hope your open to criticized comments but you should have used the song lyrics meaning and then match the right action to those words then where there was just instrument or really deep emotions implement the audio from rwby not the whole time .The whole time just made the song a bit void and not connect like it should you filled all the gaps but not its overflowing. Dont take this wrong but you can do better , hope you take it well won't dislike just trying is good enough but you have to always aim to do better .

What a great character. I don't think he was in the right and believe that team RWBY was justified in not trusting him but it doesn't take away from how well written his decent into villainy is.
I still dont forgive ionwood for shooting oscar tho
Oscar isn't even important though. The only reason he exists anyways is because he hosts Ozpin.
