Started with 50 mealworms in February 2023 and now I have about 500 (estimated).
So far, I’ve just been hand sorting and using a fine mesh pasta strainer that we already had. I wanted to keep the investment very low in case I decided to throw in the towel.
Question about air quality:
With the thousands you have, does the dust or frass cause any problems or allergy irritations for your household?

Not that we can tell. The laundry room where I kept them and also sifted out the frass was all done in there which was isolated from the house and I always made sure to wipe down and vacuum everything when I was finished. Thanks for stopping by and hope your mealworms continues to grow

How do you deal with the frass in your laundry area? It is so light and wants to drift everywhere when I try to remove it. I like your system. I keep mine in plastic boxes with ventilated sides and covers. I have not been good at cycling the life stages. They all exist together for better or worse. I can handle the mealworms themselves but the beetles still creep me out 2 years later!

Before I start the process I pull the drawer out and run a vacuum tool over the whole surface to remove any if the extra skins and such and then just lightly transfer the mealworms to the sifters and maybe because I don’t put too many mealworms in one container the result of sifting out the frass isn’t bad at all. There is some cleanup needed afterwards but typically doesn’t get very dusty. The sifters fit very snug in the 5 gallon buckets which helps with not getting too much dust fly back up. I believe they are about 12” wide 14” long and about 2” deep.
