    I am amazed to see how people do liked this video. Usually this kind of videos are edited because it is accepted that "long flight videos are boring". The statistics do show another part of the history, somehow people watched this a lot more than the edited version.

    lots of people worried about hitting airplane, from video i have seen max height about 2km comercial planes fly in 10km so good luck hitting something big.. separation is 600m so 600m out of ground should be nothing that is not landing at airport, 1200 and more are climbing altitudes which plane go to upon start in few minutes, hence no fly zone near airports for RC. if he knew where he was flying it was prety safe..

      If you fly in a rural location its pretty easy to avoid that problem. Idiots in the city who fly near airports are the ones causing issues.

      Most light aircraft in UK are between 1500 and 2500 ft, right where the more ambitious fly models...as I say, I have a big foot in both camps!!! And yes, full size aircraft have passed beneath my models... very embarrassing, being unable to move away quickly. FPV has even greater limitations for situational awareness, with restricted field of view.
      Gliders are found at or below cloud base height, usually.... so if that is your view on the screen, expect big white object to appear.
      Most air traffic happens between airports, when you think about it long enough...

      Flying anywhere around a major city will put you into controlled airspace….and airports….for instance in Pittsburgh you're limited to less than 700 ft.

      not at all, they would want you all to own one, that way they have more spies in the sky to steal FPV from, if the government is smart they'll allow and make the FPV personal craft as wide spread as an IPhone, and then tell you to build more. That way law enforcement just turns on a decrypting receiver and has no need to own expensive craft, the public provided it for them, just like they use Cell phone gps data, and audio, ready made bugs bought by the public is the future. Making laws against them is both childish and futile, same as airplanes were banned from some cities when they were first built and used.

    • @SuperAviatar
      @SuperAviatar 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      GreningerProductions I really, really want not to find a battery pack in my face at 100 mph.... never mind the politics. It's the FPV of my face being destroyed that worries me most.
      Ever flown behind a thin piece of 30 year old Perspex?
      Airplanes are still separated from cities... mostly.

    • @GreningerProductions
      @GreningerProductions 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Consider a world with drone speed limits, drone tickets, and what I really disdain drone insurance, which of course you'll need if your personal drone should decide to go all HAL on someone's face. Just as cars, planes and helicopters have to adhere to operations rules inside of populated areas the same applies to drones. The FAA will come up with a licensing regimen, and personal drones will end up being linked to their operators via registrations, something like the tail number on an aircraft but RFID based more than likely.

    • @SuperAviatar
      @SuperAviatar 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      GreningerProductions I would love a world without the FAA, CAA and other regulatory bodies.... I'm not sure about a world without rules of any kind.
      Kids teach themselves to drive on a public highway.... learn about firearms by pulling triggers. Accidental deaths are common, common sense is in short supply.
      Learn from the wise, and the stupid.... listen to the voice of the mistake, or read the memorial if you wish.
      DIY tools have killed more than 9/11, in a year.... but we do not even notice.
      If a couple of geese can dump an airliner in the Hudson, what will a battery pack do.....
      I stood next to a model flyer when his plastic helmet was punctured by a propeller spinner. He survived, with treatment. So we were justified in ensuring that Team Race pit crews wore head protection. We were not popular for insisting on this rule.
      Forethought trumps hindsight

    I was considering to go for a 4 stroke petrol engine for long endurance but after seeing your true achievement, I am amazed and have forgotten about the petrol engine based long endurance airframe setup.
    4X 3S, 5000mAh lipos have given enough capacity, close to 100%.
    Your flying wing is quite amazing, you said very correctly that it seems to have been crying for solar cells.

    On this flight, horizontal distance is 80km, maximum altitude reached is ~2000m. The On screen display used is Rangevideo_c.om RVOSD(I design it myself). Airplane is a Queen Bee from winrider, solar cells are bought from Ebay(3X6 grade "A"), Solar cell charge regulator from Genasun. The electric motor is NTM from Hobbyking, propeller is 14X7 APC, ESC is 100A Hobbywing...

    Radio control is from FRsky but boosted to 2W and using modified antennas on both Tx and Rx, video Tx is 1.2Ghz 1500mW with yagi antenna(from ebay) on receiver. All antennas are checked and tweaked with a Vector analyzer from Agilent. Camera is the DX201 from Rangevideo.

    I see a lot of folks complaining about flying in these altitudes, so I thought I'd mention some tips as it can be done safely. I'm a full size pilot along with being an FPV pilot. I use a transponder locator along with charts for my areas squawk codes & it gives me the location of all planes close to me. They can be bought for around $500.00 US.

  • @Giovanniram22
    @Giovanniram22 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can see two white small lines at the center of the image.
    One of those indicate the direction of the pilot!
    Long distance models are motogliders and they use motor only for altitude gain.
    Servo movements also are minimal with gliders.
    Also the transmiter module is external with external directional antenna.
    Likewise the video transmitter. Pilot use his monitor gogles and pilot his model.
    The only really difficult thing, is to have money to spare for the equipment!

    The secret of getting long video transmission range is having a tuned antenna on the vTx. Anything from 500mW will give you more than 5km. Then the gain of the vRx antenna will give you the extra range.

    I don't have the capabilities not the knowledge to do this, therefore you are a liar and this didn't happen. lol you ever feel like that is the argument you are going up against sometimes? amazing flight, mad respect!!! Your batteries alone cost more than my entire plane hahahaha. I use Frsky too, although I'm only pulling about 300 yards before it goes into failsafe due to interference from 900mhz video signal. I'm going to switch it up to 1.2 or 5.8 and see if that helps. Thanks for posting all of your info you've gave me a good idea of what I can use that will be compatible!!!! I wont be pulling anything of this caliber in the near future, but you've inspired me for sure!!!! Great flight!!!

    Temperature shows how much heat is on the autopilot board, numeric compass value gives greater accuracy for heading, G-load indicator helps keeping the wing flex low enough so the solar cells are not destroyed, artificial horizon indicator is a must when you fly inside the clouds.
    And ground speed is one of the most useful readings here, you want to know if you can actually reach the target before batteries run out. And yes you can get an estimate of airspeed by comparing successive readings.

    Flight was on "fly by wire" mode. Computer handle corrections, but attitude is set by direct manual control. The airplane is a flying wing, so roll corrections do cause undesired yaw. This is increased by the fact that the center of gravity its set a little behind, to help reducing drag, by not using washout.

    I was wondering the very same thing, I mean this is rock solid the whole way. I know considering the landmarks below in what you can see that it may be low density RF congestion but once he is up there at an appreciable altitude there is really no telling what he is over flying. I still keep looking and pinching myself. I mean it is Video transmitted with the OSD overlay and that indicates that it is being recorded at the Ground station. It really is an epic feat by any measure. I also asked :-)

    For the ones who write before thinking he will not encounter any airliner and anything of that nature below 3000 meters... so no jet engines to worry about and with a chopper or other slower flyers it would be very hard to collide without either party noticing. However there are measures that can be taken when someone is flying on such altitudes, sensors and a system that evades collisions.

    Hill's achievement was astounding, because his plane, the "Spirit of Butts Farm", had to weigh less than 5 kg, fuel included, to meet the FAI definition of a model aircraft. He used conventional R/C with on board computer control, GPS navigation and satellite communication when in autopilot mode away from the take-off and landing areas.
