"I have a friend who has often been treated as an eccentric person due to her eye-catching outfit, her unique taste, dynamic talents, defensive mechanisms stemming from shyness, and a personality that clearly knows her preferences.
I loved her even more because of these unique characteristics of hers, but for the same reasons, she has been living under more scrutney and hateful eyes.
These are the words I wanted to tell my 'unusual friend' that turned into the lyrics to this song but as I worked on the song, I realized that this is also my story as well.
After completing the song, I thought that anyone can be the maincharacter to this song.
I'm sure everyone has felt left out at least once in their lives because they dont' meet the standards others have made.
I want to tell everyone, including my friend, who were born rough around the edges but special.

I always think of Lilac as the 20s train having left and the 30s train is arriving. The smile says she will get on board.
Yeah...she has been doing her age series since her song "23" when she is 23 (I guess she start this on 23 because korean newbie artist usually sign a 7 years contract with their agency during her debut which is 2008 and she finally get to finish her contract term and finally has some control over her own discography creavitity right on 2015 which is when she release her"23"), "Palette" for her 25, "Eight" for her 28 and now "Lilac" is her last twenties ages series before she transits to her thirties era.
Yes i ever watch IU explain about this song. It is about she says good bye to her 20s and welcoming her 30s happily ❤
The "guy with the glasses", the musician from the mv Good Day, the train conductor from LILAC is Jung Jae-hyung.
He's a composer, mostly of film music. However, his list of friends is basically the who-is-who of Korean entertainment.
IU once said “In order to receive a song from Jung Jae Hyung, I had to chase after him to his house. I begged and begged and he finally gave me a song.”
He seems to love cameos like this. He also plays one of the managers of the Refund Sisters.

Blueming is about love blooming while texting. The colors match the messaging app on iPhone
She is my favorite female singer. She is also a wonderful person. She had a very sad life before she became famous.. pls watch her and other Kpop 2nd Generation artists in the KDrama Dream High. Thank you for appreciating her talent.
best spotlight so far i absolutly love all the song . GOOD DAY was an absolute banger back in day that song make IU very popular so it's a fantastic pick . blueming is also an absolute banger and to be honest IU is alway's successful she never had a really bad or unpopular comeback since good day . she struggle a little bit during her debut due to her really young age (14) not many people take her really seriously back then . but she's the most successful female solo artist now by far .
A few things to know about IU MV's especially those from 2014 to present when IU took over more control of her music, is the use of metaphors and symbolism in her MV's to help in telling the story. Good Day isn't one of those MV's but even in this one she starts to use some of features which will become even more dominant in the near future. For example, in Good Day after she enters the store the only thing she buys is a box of Marshmallows, which just so happens to be one her more popular songs before Good Day. Good Day is also the song that makes her a National star in Korea.
IU will use items and props from other MV's that connect the songs together and she often ties 2 or more songs together to tell a complete story, often years apart. Blueming is considered by some to be part 3 of 4 songs that tell the story of a girl in love with a boy who in the 1st video is in suspended animation and IU builds a time machine to meet in the the future. That song is You & I and was released in 2011. In the MV IU sets the time machine to Dec 31st 2019. In Dec of 2019 IU released her song Above the Time. In this MV the couple is still having trouble. While they exist in the same time they are in different dimensions and thus still apart. Part 3 is Blueming, where they now occupy the same time and dimension but are separated by a wall, although now they can communicate by phone and send notes and gifts to eachother. Finally there is Strawberry Moon. Where IU is waiting to her man under the Strawberry Moon. We learn through flash backs and memories that the to have been together as evidenced by pictures and her memories of certain special times. However, the young man wishes go out into the world but IU let's go of his hand. He wants her to come with him but she isn't ready to do so. He gives her a necklace that is inscribed with a message to meet under the Strawberry Moon. IU is waiting for him, but he is not sure that she will show up. In the end she does much to his initial surprise, he he was preparing for the worst.
There are things in these videos that IU uses to show the link. The single best connecting item for this 4 part story is the train The Fantasy Expresd, which appears in You & I, Above the Time and Strawberry Moon. Blueming is connected through the several frames pictures that appear in the first three but in differing orders, and also the physical vibration that appears to signal a shift in the space time continuum in Above the Time and Blueming.
Other examples include Eight which is a stand alone story. Through the Night is the starting of a relationship which IU paired with the song With a Determined Heart to Forget You which is the ending of the relationship. IU connects the 2 MV's through a hair clip that she wears in Through the Night and repears in the MV for the second song. There are others as well. What is important to keep in mind is that even small items or things used to stage a video more often than not have meaning and are there for a reason. So for examples the animal head pictures in BBIBBI which are used in that song as a metaphor for hate commenters hiding behind the mask of the internet she uses in her MV Coin represent her doubters and critics.
A note of interest. On Jan 2nd of this year Rolling Stone Magazine, the premiere Rock, Pop and Country publication in the world, released an update to their 20 Greatest Singers of All Time. IU and JK both made the list, being the only Koreans to make the list. IU at 135 and JK at 191. Although it comes as no surprise to me, for I have know that to be the case since I first heard her sing in 2019.
One final comment, you said you have watched IU in Hotel Del Luna, which is a great kdrama. You need to watch My Mister. It is her acting in that kdrama that got her noticed by the Japanese director and lead to her first commercial movie role that Premiered in at Cannes Film Festival.
the little piano line in the background of lilac (at 40:36) is a callback to good day, this same motif is repeated throughout good day! the lilac mv is sort of like a look back at iu’s life, and good day (released 10 years before lilac) was the song that really first shot her into stardom.
Also the lyrics and the choreo give the same callbacks 😅👍
IU is such a gem. I remember I had ‘Through the Night’ on repeat for like 2 days.
the 3 very high note in GOOD day are legendary i can't count how many time people try to cover this song and fail to reach these high note . even IU herself now can't reach these note every time .

IU's storytelling is amazing. there is connection in each song like You and I, About the Time, Last Fantasy and Blueming...that combine one story.
Fun Fact: IU once auditioned for JYPE but was rejected by a certain staff - JYP himself is still disappointed to this day (one of the reasons she was casted on the K-Drama "Dream High" - an almost Alll-JYP artist cast w/ the exception of IU, Eunjnung (T-Ara) and Kim Soo Hyun.
Concerning BLUEMING. It's a bit out of time, but iPhone messages used to be blue for your messages and grey for incoming messages.
So "sending blue flowers/boxes/balloons" basically means sending (beautiful) messages.
The grey items are incoming messages.

yes, Lilac is her 29/30 years old "age song", and that "train ride" is abt her 20's and 30's . Actually there are so many hidden easter eggs , but yeah... you spotted the biggest one : that cameo from Good Day.

Good Day is super legendary, Billboard staff placed it in the #1 in Top 100 Greatest Kpop song in 2010's . IU won Melon Music Award Song of The Year in 2011 with Good Day, also Korean Music Award Song of The Year. She was 17/18 years old.

I did not listen to Blueming very many times because when I listened and read lyrics, I did not understand it at all. It was cute, I love her voice so if the song comes on I let it play, but it was not a song I would actively search for because I did not understand. I like your interpretation and I agree with you to an extent but not entirely.
Between the way you explained it and what the MV shows, I don't think that IU was talking to any single person. I think she was talking to all of her fans collectively.
IU basically came from nothing, a poor broken home with only her naturally-occurring gift of music to get the attention she rightfully deserved (and then come to find out she is also an AMAZING actress). She can do almost anything in the Entertainment sphere.
Just to be very clear, I have nothing against her family. I came from a similar situation but at least IU actually made something of herself. She is known for being a very humble person, probably because she came from a poor family and had learned many very hard lessons from her early childhood which instilled a deep and indelible sense of empathy for other people in her.
So, maybe the miracle you mentioned is that she feels like her life as it is now, is a complete miracle. She may still feel that she does not deserve to have fans at all. The fact that she has fans and others who care about her is a miracle from her perspective. Especially considering the lyrics to Celebrity.
I have watched Celebrity many times and I LOVE it! It was an emotional song for me even when I mistakenly thought she was leaving a reminder to herself, finally acknowledging just how great she is at what she does.
But my interpretation was wrong; when I found out about the story behind the lyrics, I got tears. Leave it to this awesome, adorable, lovable, humble queen to make such a wonderful beautiful song meant to cheer up somebody else. It's such a beautiful sentiment from IU to a close friend of hers who apparently suffers with depression. It has been a while since I listened to Celebrity and I just teared up AGAIN this time. :)
IU did not come from a poor family initially. Her parents became a loan guarantor that fell on them to repay when the guarantee ran away. Her parents had to work very hard to repay the loan and shifted homes many times and so they put her and her brother to live with her grandmother in a one room flat infested with cockroaches and they sometimes had only potatoes for food.

to court in the first mv IU falls in love with a man older than her while she is underage. she decides to make a time machine to go to the future and grow old enough to be able to live this love. she meets the man she loves and he ends up together. in the 2nd Mv a jolt seems to have separated them in time IU travels again to see the man she loves who has aged again. the two meet again but end up being separated once again. in blueming IU seems to be woken up by a jolt she seems to think she can see the man she loves again but they are separated by a palisade which could represent time and sends messages to each other via blue roses which are the symbol of a impossible love . but DG you should watch the 3 mv's and make your own interpretation.
I am curious as to your interpretation. I was confused b/c you seen to be referring to the first video of those reaction (Good Day) but your comments are clearly about You & I. And in You & I the boy is not older than IU. And then you appear to suggest that Blueming is part 2 of the story started in You & I which it is not. Part 2 is Above the Time where she has time traveled to the date she entered in You & I ( Dec 31st 2019). And of course the boy has aged, it is 8 years later. But while they are both awake In the same time they are separated by dimensions. Some have suggested that Blueming is part 3 where they now find themselves in the same time and space but separated by a wall although here they are able to communicate. And Strawberry Moon could be considered the 4th and final part.

You're one of my favorite reaction channels because your so real with your reactions and I love how you talk about the mvs and the meanings of them and the lyrics. I wanted to suggest you to react to "the light" by the ark its a song by a girl group in 2015 and the mv is really sad. The song is dedicated to the sewol ferry accident and it came out around the one year anniversary of it if you dont know what it was i suggest maybe reading a bit about it before watching if u do decide to react to it. The music video is not telling the story of the sewol ferry accident directly but its supposed to basically symbolize and pay tribute to it. Its the arks only song they disbanded after only a year but the song was actually pretty popular and many idols have recommended it before so its a fairly known song I believe. Also for more solo artists I recommend checking out Lee Hi I love her and I think shes really underrated internationally one of her most recent songs is called only which I really liked maybe react to that one? Lee Hi actually like iu was really close to jonghyun of shinee who committed suicide back in 2017 she actually has a song he wrote before he died and she sang it in memory of him at an award show where she actually started crying during it and it made many idols and fans cry as the lyrics are really heartbreaking considering what he was going through when he wrote it. Its called breathe it has no English lyrics on the mv tho so youd have to react to a lyric video or a live performance maybe if u think ur not up to reacting to it tho maybe on ur own time because the song was written by jonghyun and idk sometimes it could be too heavy. Love Poem is also iu song she wrote for one of the 3 idols she was friends with who committed suicide (not sure which one it honestly couldve been all three but yeah I really recommend that one there is no mv tho also her other song peach was written for sulli of f(x) also recommend ending scene and bibbi

In my opinion Blueming is kind of the play on words between bloom and blue. Blueming as in blue of a text message on iPhone getting sent out, and also like blooom which is their love blooming with every blue text. So blue and bloom are use interchangeably. Grey text is how it shows up when a message coming in and the blue is when the message is received on iPhone. It’s such a brilliant piece visually and lyrically.
For Lilac, it’s a goodbye to her 20s and hello to her 30s. Starting from the where are you going part in the station, those songs are representative of different stages in her life and career. The train she was on is her 20s and the train coming towards her is her 30s. The first part of the train she was in the retro 40s type of clothing and the dancing resemble her Good day, You and I era. She released a couple albums with similar vibes during this period. It was the start of her career truly hit its first real peak and also went on for a while as she explore that part of her musical growth. I think her being full of excitement and also a little foreign to a new environment was also represented here as this is when she truly enter the world as an adult. Then the dance floor part is similar to her era of “The red shoes”, her acting career with Hotel De Luna and jsut the fun and experimental time of her life. Then you’re spot on with the fighting I think both represent her fighting through life obstacle, as well as resemble her beat up look in her show Mister (to me) and her look in “Coin” music video. Finally, with the animation part, it brings back to her Eight music video which also is a letter to her lost friends who passed. I think the imagery of her holding on to a box with little trinkets and notebooks/diaries represent the love ones she lost will always be in her memories. I think in a way it’s the stage of life where she can treasure her life experience good or bad.
There’s also a common way to prefer to youth in Asia as the spring of your life, typically referring to your 20s. It’s supposed to be the most beautiful time in your life. Lots of ppl also have the idea that once it’s passed something is lost. However, she’s saying, your next stage (represent by the incoming train) will be just as beautiful. The “spring” of your 20s might have passed, but it will come again like the way the season come around again. So her last message is kind of a double meaning on that. Also the little expression of lost and disappointment she had after she got off the train really capture the feeling of ending a stage of your life and feeling nostalgic of your youth and unsure of what’s to come. Then, she’s smiling with optimism and hope ready to hop on the next train to her 30s.

I didn't see anyone answer your question about the man who plays sax in Lilac. It's singer/composer Jung Jaehyung, and you're right! He is the same person who plays instruments in Good Day. Lilac largely references IU's 20s since she's moving into her 30s, and Good Day was a hugely iconic moment for her. I believe Jaehyung's also the composer of IU's track "L'amant". :)
