You are one of the very few who points the movie camera the other way to explain what's in front of you rather than some one showing a mugshot and trying to explain what's in front of them, I enjoyed walking along the pathway at the beginning as if I was there! I loved the silver birch picture and the end result of it, well done and thank you for taking us with you....

It's really amazing how you can nail down a composition in that harsh light. Some beautiful photos both the abstracts and the normal ones. Thanks for sharing the experience.

That photo of the highlighted tree among a darkened exposure was a revelation! it immediately opened up new possibilities for me in woodland in harsh light conditions! Thank you!

Light is not always the enemy…so true. It’s what draws us to the subject isn’t it. I sometimes just stare at light bouncing off trees or the ground or even dappled light reflecting off buildings it’s almost like it’s there just for me.

I just got the R5II but for some stupid reason Canon decided to give us final multiple exposure image in jpeg only unlike the R5 that gives RAW, I'll use the R5II for wildlife and pick up an R5 for everything else. Great pictures BTW;)

The challenge with exposure with digital cameras is that any sunlit scene will exceed the range of the camera’s sensor. A workaround is the take and blend two exposures, something phone cameras now do automatically. But with a DSLR or Mirrorless it involves shooting two exposures, one for correctly exposed highlights (1/3 under clipping warning in highlights) and one with three stops slower shutter speed.
What I’ve done for many years - I started using Photoshop in my job back with V1 - is manually combine the two exposures buy copy/pasting the shadow exposure into the highlight one, adding a black filled mask (hold down opt when adding mask) then opening the mask selectively where I want the shadow detail added. Adding it everywhere (globally) in the image - which is what AI driven HDR does - creates too much of a “sea of sameness” which looks fake. Impressive in its shadow detail mind you but fake. Just adding the shadow detail around the center of interest, letting it fade to black around the edges of the frame creates a perceptual dynamic similar to how the brain gets “tunnel vision” when fixated on any area in a scene. Vignettes of tone and detail in a photo will created that same sensory response and help lead the viewer to the focal point.
Creating photos with a compelling focal point during a walk in the woods can be a challenge because it is such a “sea of sameness”. Something I learned about perception and composition is that CONTRASTING the intended focal point in the photo with the “negative” space of the rest of the frame is the most effective way to pull the attention of the view there and hold it so that area, not some contrasting direction near the edge of the frame is the last thing they dwell on and remember when disengaging from the image.
Contrast can be created many ways: tone, color, pattern, texture. In the forest I’ll look for a tree with a different shape or one that in different light. For wide establishing shots the focal point may just be the point at the horizon where a path seems to disappear evoking the feeling of walking through the woods to discover what is around the bend or the path less traveled.
The more ‘dwell time’ on the focal point the more of a ‘wow’ factor the image will have in the mind of the viewer - why in a sequence of wide, medium, close-up views of the same content the close-ups nearly always have most visual impact why I always shoot all three, usually in reverse order starting by cropping in tight on some detail that caught my eye and motived the capture of the image then expanding the view to created a story around it which makes the viewer feel they walked the same steps. 😊
