Shellac is actually nontoxic once it's dry! You wouldn't want to drink it out of the can because it contains denatured alcohol which IS toxic. But once the alcohol has evaporated and the shellac is dry, it's completely food-safe and in fact Skittles are coated in shellac! It's really just a plant resin precessed by beetles, similar to how honey is nectar processed by bees. Hope this will calm some anxieties for anyone reading this! I love shellac and use it extensively in my woodworking projects because it's nontoxic and gorgeous.
My son made me a cinnamon ornament when he was in 1st grade. It smelled so good! It finally dried out and fell apart about 10 years later. I kept all the pieces 😂. I’m going to make some with his children this year. Here in 2020! Tyfs.
So cute!! I made these with my girls when they we little and put their handprint in round ones. Didn't have mod podge then so I sealed them with elmer's glue. They lasted forvever. TFS Jeri!!
I think this will be our project for next year. Each year I do a project with my grandchildren to give to their parents as gifts. This year we are doing silhouettes of each of them. I found oval frames from Walmart to make them look antique. Next year I'll have a 3rd grandchild and we'll do these cinnamon salt dough ornaments. I think we'll do their hands so mom and dad will have that forever. Thank you so much for the recipe and inspiration!
I also have severe arthritis in my hands since my 30s now 50 & my hands look like they are 80+, & also found out accidentally that kneading helps tremendously. I have always made these with Elmer's clue & just cinnamon as well salt dough , now I'm looking forward to combining. Definitely doing a paw print , my babies are grown now & too soon for grand babies.💚
I'm gonna try these this morning and the recipe with the apple sauce. Hubby and I doing a gingerbreadman theme for our tree this year. This is such a fun and creative way to make some ornaments. I guess I got to get good at it for my future grandkids. 😅🥰 the older I get the more patients I have.
I've done salt dough ornaments. But not cinnamon. My kitchen is done in a gingerbread/peppermint theme for Christmas. I'll be using this recipe to make a gingerbread man garland. Thanks Jeri-Ann!
Hey Jeri, how many ornaments (approx) do you get out of one batch of dough? I think I will make some of these with my grandson ❤️. I put dough ornaments in the TH-cam search box and you popped up. Love, love these ornaments, unfortunately, I wasn't blessed with great handwriting, like you. I remembered, however, how awesome your handwriting and painting skills are! My favorite ornament was the painted "JOY"one! Thank you again for sharing all your diy's, I also have arthritis issues, so glad you didn't give up. I certainly understand the unfortunate issues that can go along with arthritis, and some folks do not understand that there are many forms of arthritis. Please, keep sharing your wonderful DIYs, and I (as many others) will continue to watch! Again, thank you for sharing, so VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.🤗
Your channel just showed up as a new suggestion for me and I am so glad! I am planning to make these with my daughters tomorrow. So fun and beautiful! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Thank you! You always make the best stuff. I'm making these for my tree. I finally have an idea now if what I wanna do in terms of decorating it. This gave me the inspiration. Thank you!! 💙💙💙💙
Thank you Jeri-Ann I really enjoyed watching. Thanks for sharing, we are going to give it a shot. We will let you know how it goes🙂 Have a Blessed Day.💞
Jeri-Ann these are so awesome & thank you for the recipe. I was looking for a recipe so I could make some with my grandson, now I can. Thank you for sharing
Hi! I’ve heard that these could be dipped/ coated in wax at least for the baked kind.I’m making some today from your recipe, thank you. Really like the double decker ones.
Thank you so much for sharing. I too have limitations and your videos inspire me. Keep 'em coming coz they keep me busy and stop me from getting into mischief 😁❤️
I like these. My daughter in law is expecting and wants me to make a handprint of the baby and her other two boys....so glad I seen this...I've got ideas for them. TFS GREAT IDEA....after coating will they be like a plaster type texture?
Hello, Jeri! You are so talented! You always come up with the cutest ideas! Thank you for sharing your memories and talents with us! It is really special! Have a great weekend!
Jeri-Ann, I'm going to use your "recipe" and make beads to string. I know they will take longer to dry, but it will be worth it. Thank you for sharing. ~Debbie Z
Very cute, I did the regular salt dough ornaments with the grandkids a couple years ago and this year we’re doing the cinnamon/applesauce ornaments with them. I love making these types of ornaments their so fun!! Tyfs, hugs 🤗 Teresa
Jeri-Ann Henson yes they have applesauce in them we found the recipe on Pinterest a month or so ago and figured we’d try them and then yesterday or the day before This Southern Girl Can (I think is her channel name) made them!!! She didn’t seal them or anything so I’m guessing they don’t get rancid but I’ll let you know after we make them 😂😂😂😂. The recipe is literally cinnamon and applesauce and once it’s mixed the dough looked pretty much like yours did. They air dry just like these or you can bake them at 200 for a couple hours. I’d never heard of them either until we found them on Pinterest and we thought they’d be fun to make with the kids this year. I wondered about sealing them with mod podge but none of the recipes I saw said they needed to be but personally I figured it’d be a good idea to.
You have been super helpful!!! I’m going to do these with my grandkids today. Love the rugged cross! Now I know what to do with my mod podge from 1492!!!! You have a new subbie. Are you from Long Island?
Very good idea plan to make some this weekend when you put either mod podge or gloss spray on before or after you decorate and do you also do a coat after decorating them. I had a hard time understanding that part of the video thank you for a great gift Idea for my family and friends
Honestly I think that will depend on what you decorate them with. If you’re going to use a permanent marker then you probably don’t need to seal them after but if you need acrylic paint might be a good idea to keep them from chipping off. Ceiling before decorating just helps keep the bleeding under control depending on what kind of medium you use. I hope this helps!
If you cover the salt dough at the end with mod pudge, do you still smell the cinnamon? Just curious since I’ve only made the applesauce cinnamon ones.
I saw a lady using nutmeg cloves actually pumpkin spices and they told someone you could use pumpkin but didn't give measurements but had spices in zip lock bag so would you use same measurements you used
Stacey, if you keep it air tight it should stay for a couple of days, this will depends on how the moisture absorbed and your climate and environment. Thank you for the great question.
Made some years ago. My oldest son came home and ate 6 of them before I could tell him not to eat them. They were coated in shellac.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦 cookie snatching days are over, he could not believe all of them did not taste like sugar
Lol 😂 that’s hilarious 😂

If you cover the salt dough at the end with mod pudge, do you still smell the cinnamon? Just curious since I’ve only made the applesauce cinnamon ones.
Yes. Like crazy! lol. I shared a short once when i open the tin they are stored in it’s incredible
i wonder if I can substitute turmeric spice for the cinnamon?
I saw a lady using nutmeg cloves actually pumpkin spices and they told someone you could use pumpkin but didn't give measurements but had spices in zip lock bag so would you use same measurements you used
Thanks so making them
how long will this dough stay soft? i'd like to make it ahead and bring it to my daughters' school for a classroom craft project. Many thanks!
Stacey, if you keep it air tight it should stay for a couple of days, this will depends on how the moisture absorbed and your climate and environment. Thank you for the great question.
