BAND-MAID = high-energy fast melodic hard rock at its best.
The kind of rock music that is so rare these days and why they are so special.

IMO the best live rockband out there today... Everyone is individually so talented, it´s astounishing! And they are not casted like most asian bands, they are a bunch of friends doing what they love, writing their own songs and they care A LOT about the fans, very humble and funny ladies. Maybe you wanna checkout some more, i suggest Onset (live) an instrumental...
They are showing off in that live performance. Greetings from Germany, stay healthy everyone!

When they grouped up around the drummer they were making funny faces at her trying to throw her off. lol

There's so much more where that comes from, too. When they play outside Japan they play smaller venues, and even more than is this clip, you really see how much they love being on stage. I think it helps that they also seem to enjoy playing together. They can be almost 'unprofessional' (the part where they crowded the drummer was them pulling faces to put her off) in their manner, like five friends just up there having fun, and the shows are all the better for it.

Age: Late 20s. Akane (drummer) turns 30 in December.
Exist-Trace, an all female visual Kei band I follow, early 30s.
Scandal, who really were teenagers back in 2005 and still may appear to be, are around 30 or so now.
The all female band who broke open the hard rock and metal scenes for women, Show-Ya, are back after a hiatus. They hit their stride in the 1980s and created a lot of excitement. So they are 50+. They recently began and put on an all female music festival in Japan, except I think this year.
Ningen Isu, a male trio, are known as "grandpa metal" and are quite impressive.
And some older acts like Loudness have done comeback tours in recent years from what I hear.
So yeah, there is a youth direction in the industry in Japan (not that they're alone), but there are thirtysomething and older bands kickin' it as well.
And that will soon include Band-Maid who are right now gaining fans by grassroots fandom worldwide, and lots of them.
BTW, all members of Band-Maid had worked in or with other bands and acts before they formed this one. Miku had done some acting, Saiki some domestic fashion modeling - and she is in more demand as a model lately for obvious reasons.
Kanami not only played professionally, she taught guitar online and is Miku's guitar coach. Miku has come a long way.
Kanami typically leads the musical composition off, then everyone collaborates to make it work.
All that play an instrument are multi-instrumentalists. And all continuously learn and develop their craft.
Miku Kobato is a stage name meaning Little Pigeon, which she jokes about and does wordplay on a lot. MK is said to be 810 years old. Her humanity has one more year in her twenties as of last month. She is lead lyricist.
Misa played guitar before bass, and it shows. No boring basslines for her.
Kanami uses double kickers on her bass drum. She was the one that Jimmy Page specifically asked to get a picture with after Band-Maid finished a set.

They are actually trying to make the drummer laugh when they congregate around her. If you watch the live video Play from this same concert they try to get her to laugh but she starts making faces and the singer is laughing.

Thanks! You’ll probably get many enthusiastic suggestions. I’d just like to say that if you want to explore Band-Maid, they would have 105 songs out by the time their new album Unseen World releases in January. In a recent fan poll about “favorite” band-Maid song, there were so many responses that the largest slices of the pie chart (3 songs almost tied) would still keep you starved if it were an actual pie. The chart was mostly just black lines, many black lines. So they have A LOT of great songs.
And yeah. Band-Maid put up great 2-hr 23+ song concerts (this song was song #22 in this concert). Quality from beginning to end.
Saiki, the singer is 26 this year. Akane, the drummer, turns 30 soon.
Thanks for sharing the interesting info about the music scene.

there are older popular bands still going out touring, BUT they tend to be in the minority. B'z, X Japan are examples. most of the pop singers tend to do the retiree tours(with their hard core fans)

The age limit is definitely true in the idol scene. But there are older bands in Japan. The techno-pop trio Perfume is their early 30's. The metal band Ningen Isu was found in 1987 and is still playing. The all female metal band Show-ya was founded in '81, broke up in '98, reformed in 2005 and are still performing

Yes, Japan has an obsession with youth and yes, many performers have a short shell life, especially in the Idol scene, but Japan also has plenty of artists and bands who have been going strong for decades. We just don’t hear much about those in the west because they never break through here. Japan has the 2nd largest music industry in the world. Artists don’t need to break through in the west to be big. So what little we see here in the west gives us a very incomplete picture.

More BAND--MAID! Where will you go from here? Another from this show like 'Freedom'? Another show like 'Real Existence'? An official Music Video like 'Blooming' or 'Rinne'? Or maybe a BAND-MAIKO song like' Secret Maiko Lips' of 'Gion Cho'? The ball is in your court. I look forward to your next BAND-MAID Reacion.

Really good, interesting group discussion, subbed! People generally feel they were formed more organically and seem more independent of their management than a lot of Japanese groups, but I wonder if that isn't actually true of a lot of the rock- and indie-oriented J-bands compared to the idols/mass-market pop/show act side of things we Westerners associate with Asia.

The concert is not choreographed! Their "backstage meeting" is actually them playing around with each other. Misa - Miku and Kiname are trying to actually make Akane screw up! Problem is they don't. If you slow down and watch them they are all making faces at each other. While they play.
These ladies are in their late 20's - the energy in this video goes for 2 hours throughout the concert.

Yousei Teikoku has been making great music for well over 20 years.
X-Japan, Shonen Knive, Gacharic Spin, etc..., so many great bands that have been around a long time. And then there is the whole Enka scene (not really my thing) with artists who have been popular for over 30, 40 years and longer.

All of your comments do not apply to Band-Maid. Here is what the band's founder small pigeon says from 2015 when asked about what type band she had put together. "We are not a JPOP or idol band. Please judge us by our sound. Po!" And as far as Babymetal not playing the states they performed before 35,000 right here in Sacramento October 13, 2019 at Aftershock Music Festival headlined by Tool and Korn. Band-Maid is their own band and the only one from Japan. Sacramento loves Band-Maid.

  • @lurkmerchant
    @lurkmerchant 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

All the members are pushing 30s. The youngest member the lead singer Saiki who is 27.
Band like band-maid is different from mainstream J-pop/J-Rock bands tend to have longer carrier. Babymetal on the other hand have added members or changed members. Those girls fronting the band have to be young, as it seems, in order to stay marketable.
Most boy bands, idol bands in general have short shelf life as one of you mentioned and once they hit 30 something and start looking older they move onto acting or become radio/TV personalities.

As great as the whole performance is...the absolute highlight is when Miku falls off the band stand after her duel with Kanami. Miku is a self-admitted klutz who trips and/or falls at least once almost every concert. Her bruises are epic...giving it all for Rock&Roll. LOL

South Korea is the same when comes to singers. They may be fantastic but they filter in young talent as if on an assembly line. If you want, check out Ailee from South Korea. She is the most amazing soloist but has been stalled out after reaching her early 30s. Better then Beyoncé and is just as good if not better than Whitney Houston.
