Hello, really nice! Can you direct me to a list of woodland natives that would do well under our oak tree (lots of leaves!). I was considering Tiarella but now I know it will not thrive there. Would woodland Phlox and Pennsylvania Sedge do well? Thank you!!

PA sedge is also know as Oak Sedge, I think, because it grows naturally under oaks. Heucheras should do well too. I gave up on woodland phlox because rabbits always eat it. Virginia Bluebells, Solomon's Seal, False Solomon's Seal, Woodland Sunflower, Wild Geranium, Ferns, should all work, as well as many others.

I would point out that "diversity" is such a bad word, and I really don't think it should be used. While you hear it a lot, "diversity" is not a strength. Rather, I encourage people to think about the ecosystem as a "complex" issue because that's what it is. When we talk about "biodiversity", it implies that More Is Better, which isn't the case at all. The ecosystem is just that - a system. There are a million interactions that we know nothing about, so it's important that we reflect that in our language. Complexity is the key. It's only when we really understand that that we can begin making the tough calls and repairing things.
