Ive been meaning to make some of your carriage bolt clamps since I watched your video but I haven't had a project I needed them for yet. Thanks for taking the time to show us your work

The Spool clams and the luthiers clamps are a game changer! Really worth spending the day making them for the time saved using the in the future!
      Happy building!

always making my own tools , my favorite is a thickness sander for small parts great for making wood binding and purfling . But I will be steeling your bridge jig idea . I find it takes me 20 to 30 min to get set up to cut the saddle slot every time .I think the same jig might be adapted for string / pin holes

That is a great idea to have another/ or the same jig to make pin holes!
      Thanks

I've made a few hand-planes including a convex-sole palm plane which i used to carve my first two archtop guitars. I now have an Ibex palm plane which feels nicer in my hand but I still find use for my hand-made plane.

I do want a bigger ibex at some point! Such great tools.
Did you use a print for your handmade one or your own personal judgment?
I do find the idea of making one appealing.

@@HovingtonInstruments I made mine many years ago according to plans in Irving Sloane's book Steel String Guitar Construction. I cut the blade from an old hand saw which i ground and polished to shape. It was a good way of learning about how a good plane works. Admittedly the weighty feel of the Ibex in the hand is better than my wooden plane.

Ever since I watched you make a ukelele out of a 2x4 I've been hooked. I wish I could take a lutherie class from you.

Hi Tomy, thanks for the video. I find your design and building process thoughtful and enlightening. I’m sure that a lot of your insights come from years of experience but you do make it look accessible. One day I will get access to a workshop which has a stable humidity and then I will try making some instruments. Much appreciated.

Good info Tomy. Making jigs and fixtures is the heart of Luthrie. And really, being able to invent and build a tool on the fly is what makes it interesting. I need to make a nice gramel. (Prolly not spelled right) Last time I needed one I just sharpened a flat head screw and screwed in into a scrape of mahogany.

You are Soooo right Dane! It is the heart of the art!
The Gramil is a nice day project! And a fun one!!
Let me know how it went!
      Happy new year!

I’ve been wanting to make my own radius dish bases for the go bar deck. Used for getting a dome in the top and back of acoustic guitars. Those dishes are about $100 ea. and you need 2 different radii.

100amplifiers this is how I managed to go around buying the radius dish. I do have to make a new one every time I make a different instrument model but then I have them for the next of the same models... th-cam.com/video/Q0Z3w0zclIM/w-d-xo.html

That scroll binding bender is very handy, I will make that. I am bending around a screwdriver shaft now but this is much handier. Thank you for the info and keep up making those nice videos

Haaaaaa!!! The screwdriver, been there, and no shame in that. I think you will enjoy the scroll bender..

Tomy great vidieo, I just tried too make 4 cam clamps this past weekend, I found them a bit harder too make than I thought & after I tried the clamps 3 of them do not hold when i tried too clamp something, I cannot find anything too trouble shoot what I might have done wrong for them to not clamp?

    • @HovingtonInstruments
      @HovingtonInstruments  4 ปีที่แล้ว

2 out of my 10 clamps had this issue and the problem was the hole for the lever was in the wrong spot. It needs to be off center so when it is spun around it puts pressure. That was my problem and I honestly don’t see what else might be wrong.
