  • This literally is the best day trip from San Sebastian. If you like light hiking, beautiful views, seaside villages, good wine and great food (and if you don't, you're crazy!). In February, Yoly and I walked from San Sebastian 3 hours east to the beautiful villages of San Pedro and San Juan. If you're ever in the area, you should do this! More info down below about how to do it. Venga, let’s go! 🥝

So you're probably wonder, how the hell do I do this trip on my own?
First, let me get one thing clear - because all the different names can be confusing. So you're going to be walking from San Sebastian to Pasajes (in Basque it's called Pasaia) along the trail called Talaia Ibilbidea. Pasaia is a municipal area, and it has four village in it. Two of those villages are called San Pedro and San Juan. Sometimes they're called Pasajes San Pedro and Pasajes San Juan. And it can all be a bit confusing. But anyway - I hope that's clearer.
So, how do you do the walk? First, head to the starting point petrol station (which is here: goo.gl/maps/efgJwf617fwyYnag7). From there, you walk up the street Zemoria Kalea - just keep following it for about 5 minutes. And then you'll hit some steps, from then on you're on the path. And to make sure you're going in the right direction, just keep following the signs for Pasaia (the Basque name for Pasajes). And below Pasaia on the signs, it'll say, "Talaia Ibilbidea" which is the name of this path that goes from San Sebastian to Pasajes.
And really you can't go very wrong. It's about 2.5-3 hours walking to the villages.
The Albolea (Basque whaling ship) is here: goo.gl/maps/RXKvtut7djUFZBVG8
The first bar Muguruza is here: goo.gl/maps/Fmnp69uCtPzuv1ho9
You get the boat here: goo.gl/maps/GVPuoRgnyp5zRnBH9 (it comes every couple of minutes and cost €0.80 each way per person).
Casa Cámara is here: g.page/casacamara?share (** you should call ahead to reserve to avoid disappointment). And the fish we got was baked monkfish (called "rape" in Spanish).
    WHO ARE WE? 🥝
    ⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯

I'm from San Sebastian and I can't believe my eyes of how a Kiwi block and a Castilian Dulcinea can get the real essence of this land in such a short tryp. You are both authentic and great. This channel is not a touristy one about the typical topics of Spain. It shows the real one. How can New Zealander know and appreciate as deeply our culture and gastronomic taste? You really are special specimen.

I'm so homesick and it isn't even my home. El Pais Vasco is one of my favorite places. We stayed in a little town called Elgeta near a wonderful town called Elorrio full of history. Nearby is a cemetery with stone sarcophagi and ancient stone markers. The Basque people are so friendly and generous. Thank you for sharing this adventure. Every time I watch one of your videos, my heart aches to be back. Stay healthy and safe.

Northern Spain is my favorite place in the whole world! Watching this vlog (three times already) has me feeling like I’m walking the streets on a so-often rainy day. Rebeira Sacra, Cambados, and San Sebastián’s Hidden Pintxo Neighourhood are others I’ve enjoyed the most! I’m from San Francisco but my wife is from San Sebastián. I was dispatched to Spain, in 2000, to manage a construction project in Vigo, Galicia and I met her while she was visiting her family who had just relocated there...complete life-changer for me! We were married there in 2005 but currently live in SF. Barring the pandemic, we visit Spain one to two times a year, every year. So, as you can imagine, I have a special place in my heart for the places I mention above and your vlogs of those places! Being married to an Española is THE BEST...she is lovely like Yoly is to you!

Love your videos James and Yoli. I'm also that guy who likes to drink the last third of the bottle. Jajaja. Unfortunately, our trip to Spain this year from April 10 to June 12 has been postponed. However, we plan to be back in Sept 2020; fingers crossed. I really liked how you both incorporated a hike and small villages. It would be great to see more of these types of videos. I took my mom to Spain in August 2020. While in Seville (yes, I know, its warm) we did your Triana tapas tour from your video. We had an awesome time! My mother in law grew up in Los Remedios and still has a Piso there that family uses when we visit. Yes, we're quite lucky. Keep up the great content!

¡Que vídeo maravilloso! Haberos visto disfrutando del País Vasco, su comida, su ambiente me lleva a una época anterior en la que podíamos viajar libremente. One thing -- did you edit out the bill? I didn't see how much it cost and I'm thinking you took it out because it contained personal information. Or have I had too much txakoli at home myself and missed something??? Que termine pronto esta pandemia para que podamos seguir a explorar los rincones de España de nuevo.

Think i might get the train to Herrara... Got Bilbao and San Sebastian in November, so a couple of trips out will be done but won't have time to wander for a long walk like that unfortunately.

Dear James and Yoly, that looks wonderful. My wife and I were in San Sebastian last October. If you want another great day trip from San Sebastian jump on a bus and go to Chillida Leku, the home of the great Basque sculptor. It's in a beautiful open air park full of his amazing work. You can eat there too. Look after yourselves and stay sane. WT

James If you payed attention in the signs you should have realise that there where 2 lines, red and white. Usually those lines tells you in which path are you walking and if it's a main one or a secundary one. Usually when you reach a crossing, like you have said, there are always those lines telling you the path you should take and a cross in the ones that are not the right ones.
Por cierto, eres de Nueva Zelanda???? Estube viajando por ahi durante bastantes meses. Un pais increible y gente aun más increible y agradable. Encantado de que tambien puedas disfrutar del Pais Vasco como yo disfrute de tu pais.

You forgot to talk about the great rivalry between Pasajes San y Pasajes San Pedro y the regatas.
If you can, try to go an see 1 regata competition where traineras of all over northern coast compete each other paddling in open sea.

I love your videos! One pro-tip: you should definitely try going for lunch at Muguruza, also known in the area as "Falcon Crest". It's not uncommon to spot some Michelin-starred Basque chefs there, and with good reason. They have no menu, instead they'll just give you an amazing tomato, tuna and anchovy salad as a starter and then bring out three or four portions of different fried fish they buy at the fish market every morning. Every single course is simply amazing, the owners are super welcoming, and we found the price to be more than fair - €40 for two people including a glass of txakoli per person! Definitely worth a try, if they survive the corona quarantine

The hiking and food were amazing! I run 5 miles everyday so hiking should not be a problem. My wife is slim so even if I have to carry her in the last mile we would be ok. Our biggest problem is that neither of us speak Spanish. Our son speaks fluent “American” Spanish but he is in college and I doubt if he likes to spend precious holidays/breaks with parents. But we should be ok on our own
