  • A Look back at Chingford Hatch and Friday Hill from a small hamlet into a residential overspill from London's growing population. Widespread change followed all across the district, as weatherboarded cottages gave way to new houses and shops. We take a look at those changes from a pictorial and historical perspective.     I was interested to see this program.
    In the mid 1950s my Grandfather Harry Harrington was on of the crossing keepers and many an afternoon during the school holidays I would spend time with him in that hut, drinking strong tea sweetened with condensed milk.
    Harry lived in Fullers Rd St Woodford and used to ride his old boneshaker bike ( no gears), to and from work daily. They were tough back then.
    I had traveled to visit from Walthamstow on my pushbike but then I was a teenager and grandad was in his 60s
