That "ah ha!" Moment when you understand what it's called conjugated. Your literally bonding it too something to make it big enough to work with the receptors.
    Well explained. Thank you!

you want to develop protective antibodies against the polysaccharide part of the bacteria not the protein component...

Great way of learning. But a bit confused with the reason of conjugation. As far as I know "conjugate vaccine" is used to activate B cells by T cells (since only polysaccharides/sugar moieties cannot induce a durable response due to T cells independency). So, in the conjugate vaccine, a polysaccharide is attached to a protein part (since protein is recognized by T cells). Hence, a long-lasting memory response is possible due to conjugation of the polysaccharide.

Riham Khlifi Tallaki isn't it astonishing that most of our university professors suck, and yet we pay huge money to get to the universities? The system is rigged

Good job, but one thing is not clear that how these conjugated vaccines are avirulent?

    • @couchpotato5778

sonia arora hemophilus influenza type b is a good example I know of. The antigenic epitope is the polysaccharide capsule of the bacteria (not the bacteria itself) which is not enough for virulence.
Now polysaccharide antigens are not good enough to trigger a T helper cell mediated response, which means no immunologic memory. This means the vaccine would trigger A B-Cell mediated IgM response which is short lived. To fill this gap, the polysaccharide capsule is conjugated to a protein which would now trigger a T-cell mediated response and isotytpe switching to IgG resulting in memory.
This probably is the entire point of creating conjugated vaccines (inducing memory to provide long term effective immunity)
