You’re my kind of gal! Over pack instead of under pack. I like to be prepared for all possibilities. Lol
I love using reusable/washable pee pads instead of a mat because they are also waterproof and most have grippies on the bottom so they won’t slide around on tile floors. Plus they are super compact and come in multi packs of two or four and are machine washable. They come in fun patterns and different sizes too!
The treat pouch I use is called "Bay Dog." It fits a full serving for my dog so that's perfect, just for size wise he's a Labrador. It has a magnetic closer, a poop bag pouch that had a hole it feeds through. Another mesh one on the other side, I put his clicker in it. And a front pouch which had a velcro top, perfect size to keep some ADA cards in it. Or keys, but I use it for cards. It's about $20 but it's lasted the test of time. Aka my dog attacking it for the last 2 years (he was a nibbley puppy, all good now lol.)

Enjoy your videos. Always love it when a new one comes. Can you do a video on proofing the “not letting your dog eat crumbs off the floor when in a restaurant”? The “leave it” command is pretty effective, it’s sneak eating French fry under the booth seat (or worse) of stuff that I can’t see that is harder to manage. For safety sake. Your thoughts?

You can find it on my Patreon at patreon.com/DoggyU. It’s just $3 to join. That video should help you with more ideas on proofing your leave-it and dropped food at restaurants. Ultimately the situation you’re having trouble in needs focused training specifically at tables and then generalizing that training. I think the video should add another layer to your leave-it training. Happy training!
I have a Corgi, just like Labs usually. But she does love sweet potatoes, so when I cook them. I have sensory problems and use garden gloves with the little nubs. I can use on one hand, and then put food right in her mouth. Another option are the plastic tubes (you can put really good quality canned food, pb, etc in there).
My lab mix only likes gravy train kibble and milkbone biscuits his motivation is praise

My dogs, all 5 of them, love Purina one turkey and venison dog food. I use it as treats. It's the only one that they all like.
Merrick has power bites my puppy great dane loves the rabbit and sweet potato. She will do anything for them.

I love the idea of the squeeze bottle, I never would have thought of that in a million years, my dogs are raw fed so this is brilliant for adding some of their meals into their treat allowance 👌🏽
I’ve used so many different treat bags/pouches since I got my service dog as a puppy and find them incredibly annoying, so I use Arrak outdoor training vests instead.
Obviously there will be times this won’t be an option so I’m still stuck with the training pouches at times lol 😂
So glad that tip was helpful! I love a training vest but they're so hot in the summer! But definitely a winter staple! Sometimes I just shove a small silicon pouch into my pocket if I don't need that many food rewards with me!
Treat pouches are a game changer. I used to keep treats in my pockets... by the end of the day my pants were nasty lol

My favorite treats are purebites freeze dried beef liver and lamb liver as well as a squeeze bottle with wet food, pumpkin, or something else high value (I love this one for recall!)

I also go to other classes taught by other groups/businesses, just to see what and how they are teaching and what results they get. Really get to add to your list of how to make your classes might be better - padded floors rather than concrete. Full 1 hour classes as some places you only get 50 minutes. A/C and heated indoor facility. Our classes are the most reasonably priced in the area - local dog club, in existence for 50 years this year - woo hoo! Most of our repeat business is from people who trained their dogs with us years ago. Mostly word of mouth, and our graduates get their pictures in the paper. Thank you so much. Am always referring your videos, especially when we get people wanting to train their own dog to be a service dog. We refer those people to our positive trainers in the area. One of the best things have learned is getting your dog used to a muzzle, even if your dog is great, and especially if you travel with them. If anything bad happens, the first thing a vet will do is put a muzzle on the dog, so why freak them out twice - once when they put the muzzle on and once with whatever the vet has to do to the dog. My guys like liver that I make the morning of class, especially for the recall. My one dog has a chicken allergy and we have to stay away from rosemary, which can cause seizures. Keep your videos coming.
Refer people wanting service dogs specifically to trainers that train service dogs since that is so specific and the owners really want that specifically.

I get a lot of people that start out with pet trainers who don't understand the nuance of both working with service dogs and also their handlers, and sometimes teach things that are counter-productive to service work (like auto-sits for instance) and then we spend a lot of time un-training those things that the client could be spending teaching new skills. I’ve been using “tricky trainers” brand. My girl LOVES them. They are super small but easily cut or even broken up to make smaller.

For treat pouch I use an Oria dog treat training pouch and I love it!
It’s nice and large, had a lining that’s easy to inverse to get any crumbs out, it has a two pouch insert to hold two different types of treats separate so I usually keep kibble in one side and treat mix in the other, it’s got a pocket for your poop bad at the back, a large zipper pocket for your phone or keys or whatnot in the front and two little mesh pockets at the very front, I believe it also has a zipper pocket inside the main pouch but don’t quote me on that (I can’t check at the moment), lol, it’s got a magnetic closure and a few options for how to wear it! its main pocket is so nice and big, each pocket in the insert can hold like a full cup of food or something like that and theres still room for a small toy or whatnot, i found it on amazon because i really wanted a large treat pouch with two pockets for the large dog i had at the time and i plan on using it with my future smaller dog too because its just so amazing even though probably wont need it full with new dog other then training class, i was tired of having a ziplock bag clipped outside of my old pouch just to keep two kinds of rewards separate, lol

Ziwi peak freeze dried tripe stinks to high heaven and is really easy to break into tiny pieces (I'm currently training a Westie) they love it. Also egg cooked in a dry frypan breaks up easily and goes a surprisingly long way. Great video.

Training my 4 month Catahoula puppy. I always need to burn off a lot of his hyper energy before he will settle down enough for me to start his daily training. I like the trail combo suggestion. I’m trying out my own doggie treat recipes as we like remotely and it’s not practical for me to whip down to the store when l run out of pet food etc. I also don’t have local access to dog training courses either.
I love the idea of eventually been able to steer Brin into doing something that could benefit our local community and will utilise his natural hunting abilities, especially his ability to scent and his love of the bush eg. Kiwi search, or search n rescue.

My Aussie mix service dog really likes the Charlee Bear treats -- the original crunch in liver flavor is what we use. It is on the crunchier side for a training treat but isn't too large. He works well for just his kibble so our mix is mostly that with a few Charlee Bears and Lil Jacs for most days. I'll add cubed cheese if we're going to a more difficult environment and have some freeze dried liver treats I'm planning to introduce as another high value option for out and about. We use sliced turkey as his highest value reward for medical alerts at home or if I'm purposefully scent training his alerts elsewhere, but I'm kinda hesitant to keep meats on me all day unrefrigerated! I use the Doggone Good Rapid Rewards treat pouch, which looks like it's between the sizes of the two Olliedog pouches you showed.

As far as the meat stuff, I am lucky enough to have a little fridge in my van where I can keep training treats, but you can also bring a little lunchbox with a freezer pack if you're worried about it staying cold. The ruffwear one I use could even keep the slim freezer pack that I have in the pouch next to the meat. So there are ways to overcome it, but definitely something to watch for! Sometimes microwaving the heck out of hotdogs works well so they are essentially dried. Anyways, thanks for recommending another pouch! Happy Training!

Well she is trained as a service dog now, changed my life, even the city recognized her as a service animal!!!

I don't generally use a training vest, but in the past I've actually used hunting vests. I find a pouch more useful for me. But I know a lot of people use the Hurtta one :)

Ever try a jelly bean for a dog? Odds are they will not be interested. But then if you break one and offer it again, the chewy sweet inside hooks them, and they chew chew chew for a long time on one jelly bean. And eagerly chase the next one they are offered.
Thanks, Laura! This was really helpful! My 5 month old standard poodle puppy Oliver loves tiny pieces of chicken, turkey, cheese, or hot dog. I'm going to try cutting up one of those fresh dog food rolls for treats, as he's not so interested in the gazillion store bought training treats he used to like, now that he's had fresh food, lol! I'll also try more produce to see if I can find fruits or veggies he might like.
The local trainer we've been working with recommended Benebones for chewing, but even though I have tried all the different shapes and flavors with Oliver, he's not especially interested in them. Do you have any tricks for encouraging a pup to chew on a Benebone? He doesn't care for peanut butter, but I haven't tried other dog-safe nut butters. He does like the Earth Animal No-Hide chews, and trachea from our local pet supply store but not the ones from Chewy. Thanks for any suggestions you have!
Sounds like a picky guy who will require some experimenting but I would try a smear of cream cheese. Honestly though, for most dogs a benebone is wayyyy too low value for use in a class, especially dogs with opinions like yours 🤣
Bringing a filled Toppl is probably a better bet!
Can you train a well behaved 11month old into a service dog? Or best to get a younger dog?

11 months is not too old to start training. The real hurdle you have to clear is having the right 11 month old to do the job. So it's not about age, but instead about temperament, socialization, and health. Was the dog well-socialized as a puppy? Is the dog friendly and appropriate with people and dogs, are they free from any health concerns, are they free from fear of common issues like noise, shiny floors, traffic, etc. I offer a Service Dog 101 consult if you're looking to talk more about your particular dog and go over the checklist of attributes that predict a higher success rate in service dogs. You can find that info at DOGGYU.COM. But no, 11 months isn't too old :)

So I'm really surprised no one has mentioned this but the store bought treats you recommended are really quite horrible for dogs. The Zukes has cane sugar (which hopefully people know dogs shouldn't be eating straight up sugar) and vegetable glycerin (a by-product of the soap making process) and Biljac just straight up has BHA in it (a toxic ingredient that promotes cancer growth in dogs). The Wellness Softbites has cane molasses (more straight sugar), Vegetable glycerin, and GARLIC!! (For those who don't know, garlic is SUPER toxic to dogs!) Additionally, giving dogs any kind of cheese products can cause pancreatitis as dogs are naturally lactose intolerant.
Normally, I think your videos are amazing so I was super shocked to see these products on your recommended lists considering how many people look to you for advice and wisdom on what to give their dogs. Please, reconsider what you present to your audience when making these videos in the future and also what you give your own dogs as I hope you'd want them to live their healthiest lives 💜💜💜.

However, sometimes those options are outside of people's budget or ability to get locally.
