- Cardiotocography (CTG) is a continuous recording of the fetal heart rate obtained via an ultrasound transducer placed on the mother's abdomen. It is also called Non Stress Test . NICE guideline about intrapartum Care provide a very good over view about the interpretation of CTG in labor.
Understanding CTG is very important because if changes are detected on CTG, steps can be taken to help treat the underlying problem. Fetal heart rate monitoring also can help prevent treatments that are not needed.
CTG is widely used in pregnancy as a method of assessing fetal well‐being, predominantly in pregnancies with increased risk of complications. Other test for assessment of fetal wellbeing include Partograph and Biophysical Profile.
Indications of CTG include certain maternal and fetal indications. The maternal indications include certain medical disorders like hypertension, diabetes, pre-eclampsia etc. and fetal indications include intrauterine growth retardation, oligohydramnios etc.
Other tests for assessment of fetal wellbeing include Biophysical Profile , Partography etc.

This Channel is providing knowledge in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Obstetrics is related to medical and surgical care before, during, and after a woman gives birth. Obstetrics focuses on caring for and maintaining a woman’s overall health during maternity. This includes pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Gynaecology on the other hand focuses on women’s bodies and their reproductive health. It includes the diagnosis, treatment, and care of women’s reproductive system. This includes vagina, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Gynaecology also includes screening for and treating issues associated with women’s breasts. Gynaecology is the overarching field of women’s health from puberty through adulthood. It represents most of the reproductive care you’ll receive during your lifetime.
