My piano teacher studied with Bolet at Indian University. Heard some great stories and My teacher spoke very highly of him as a pianist and a teacher. He studied the Rach 3 with him and passed that knowledge to me. Now I'm passing that knowledge to my students. Great Pianist!
A former student of JB at Indiana recently shared this lovely anecdote with me. 'One day I was waiting at his door for him to stop playing, to knock for my lesson, and unknown to me Abbey Simon had come up quietly behind me. He slapped me hard on the back and said in his tough New York style: “Don't worry kid, we all feel like that when we hear Jorge play!” '
Aside from it being a marvellous performance, it also interesting in terms of Jorge Bolet's biography as it has been said that he only made a return to Britain for concerts - after an absence - in 1977. In fact he played the Tchaikovsky in October 1974 with Paavo Berglund in the Royal Festival Hall (and the announcer here [anyone know his name?] also mentions a Rachmaninov 3 in 1974). The Finnish maestro and JB go back some way. In May 1965, they gave concerts in Sydney/Perth, Australia during Bolet's big tour down under, his first to Australia.
Wonderful performance. Not at all too fast, just like JB's 1987 studio recording is not at all too slow. Great artistry is not quite so tempo-dependent.

You are making a magnificent contribution with these Bolet releases. Please keep up the good work!
Bravo! Great upload... AGAIN!

Salt Cots -- Wow....those Cubans are Monsters! I'm thinking too of Jorge Prats (Rakhmaninov 2nd)......BRAVISSIMO from Acapulco!

Brilliant performance....but a bit too fast....We're not racing Horowitz, after all......
On several occasions, Berglund tries to RESTRAIN the speeding Bolet.......
