Yeah, if we literally are just staying home and didn't have to work(for some people, go to school), I can see it being ok to help out in Jury Duty. Problem is, most adults all have responsibilities and Jury Duty is a net loss towards it with nothing in return.

I have pretty bad social anxiety so jury duty sounds like my personal purgatory! I'm always so afraid I'll get asked questions I don't understand or that perhaps be seen as too dumb and get really embarrassed, or make the wrong choice. Sometimes my anxiety becomes so severe I have bowel problems and heart palpitations. I can't fricken help it!! I do not want to do it but I'll have to call next weekend and hope to God that my group isn't called in. Also it seems so strange to have complete strangers pulled off the side of the road to determine a person's fate. I have a hard time thinking I'm the perfect candidate for something like this but I guess we'll see. 😭

There was a time jury duty was fun... the first 4 times going in for selections.
Never got selected usually the far from the first 12, so even as they dwindle the numbers of selected jurors I'm usually in the pews at 60th or 100th.
Closest I got to being selected was about 2005 or 2006.
Single file, I was among the 12 on the jury seats entering the courtroom, and the 50 to 100 plus in the pews.
And they gave us a ringer on the questioning both from the judge and both lawyers. Our questioning went on so long, he gave the us all a break, and I noticed a former high school friend, he was in law school sitting in on trials for his degree. I talked with him for a while, someone else asked him, are you supposed to be talking to the jury pool? We just ignored him.
And then a guy next sitting with me as jury selection in the juror pew was a sailor in the Navy about my age, probably just a bit younger, exchanged cards as I was interested in becoming an officer for aviation at some point of my life. Many times the judge spoke quietly with the attorneys and told us to "talk about the topics of the day". So we chit chatted a lot... I now wonder if it was to allow the attorneys to see which of us jurors were chatty or not. I'm normally not... but in this case there were interesting people on the panel next to me, and didn't help a fellow high school alumni was in the pews watching for law school.
Our state, we get to know quite a bit about the case during selections. And the lawyers grilled us all... from the beginning the judge said this would be only 6 juror panel, not sure what that means always thought it was 12.
I was number 9 I think. The defending lawyer looked like my older brother, and he kept looking at me during questioning by the plaintiff lawyer, and even as I was dismissed... I kind of felt bad, was thinking he knew based on my questioning maybe that I would be a "good" juror for his case or maybe he could decide?
Anyway that one for me was pretty easy from the outset: the guy was completely innocent... at least far as what I heard, more than just presumed innocent, I couldn't even figure out how they had probable cause to prosecute him.
The most recent 5th time in 2017 one that I didn't even want to be there... was domestic abuse where the girlfriend/wife had gashes and a black eye... the defendant had a record... he was as guilty as all get out. I didn't want to be asked, because I was going to explain I'm already biased based on what was disclosed and all people present... that guy is guilty! And I don't think I can presume him innocent going into this trial. Others had the same sentiment during their questioning... they pretty much just kept whatever was the first 12. And the defendant made me mad, he just looked like a wife beater, evil piece of junk.

Then just vote not guilty then.
if you don't want to be part of the process, cast your vote as if you weren't there.
If you vote guilty you've made an impact but if you vote not guilty then technically it's the same as not being there because the person is innocent untill being proved guilty, so you've just kept the status quo and you've not took part in conviction someone where the police are probably lying in an unbalanced system etc.
Just because you have to doesn't really mean you have to participate.
Kick back, chill, do nothing say innocent go home, you've not done anything to convict a man or woman and the court system and the jury duty has proved their own flaws.
      That's what I've done twice.
Also if you want out of it, I've found to say you abuse substances and you have a drug problem and you're out of there.

Yesterday, on January 20, 2023 I completed my jury service. This was my first jury trial I've been in. I got a summons in the mail back I believe on October 14, 2022 or somewhere around there and at the time I was 19. I remember filling out the 12 questions then signing up for registration. After, I went to my jury duty portal for orientation. Next, was calling or going on the portal to see when I had to go to the courthouse and I would have to go on October 27.
On October 27, 2022 I went to my local courthouse to the Jury Assembly Room. I felt out of place since I knew I was the youngest one there. I was there for like about 1 hour. All that was just discussed was the 12 questions, roll call to check if everyone was present, and asking everyone yes or no if they can serve. If you said yes then you got a yellow paper on what date to return and which department. If you said no then you will still need to come back and have a good reason for the judge on why you can't serve.
I returned back on November 14, two days after I just turned 20. We're at the assigned department and we were allowed to sit anywhere. What was discussed was the general subject about the case ( civil case if you were wondering) and we all got questionnaires about the idea of the case. The attorneys on both the plaintiffs and defense will look at them to select the 12 main jurors.
Two days later on November 16, we went back to continue the selection process. Once the 12 jurors are selected and sworn in you're basically there until the end. The attorneys then move on to select 12 alternative jurors. Once the 12 main jurors and 12 alternative jurors have been selected everyone else is dismissed.
Overall the experience was at times either boring, interesting, or okay. Originally the case was estimated to last 63 days or until February, but then got reduced.

I just attended my first jury duty summons today at the Multnomah courthouse. Hours of waiting. Then 60 people were called to be dismissed for the day and come in tomorrow. I wasn’t one of them. 20-30 minutes later we were all dismissed and told we weren’t needed tomorrow. I’m actually glad cause there’s some stuff I was not looking forward to missing at work! But at the same time, darn.

It’s strange how jury duty work in a lot of states and cities. My dad would always ignore jury duty summons and he never got in trouble or anything. I was suppose to go a few months ago but i ignored the summons. They just sent me another summons with a different date to go but luckily I called a day before and was excused.

  • @garywatson

I’ve been called three times. One time I sat in a room for half a day then they sent us all home as no juries were needed. The second was a DUI and I got kicked off during voir dire because (a) I’ve donated a few bucks to Mothers Against Drunk Driving and possibly (b) they asked if as an engineer I could ignore everything I know about how breathalyzers work and accept whatever bullshit I was fed (nope, sorry). The defense made a mistake by striking me as what I know about breathalyzers is that they are mostly designed by incompetent morons and are completely untrustworthy. The third trial I was empaneled and voted to be jury foreperson - a very serious case where a homeless man nearly beat a homeless woman to death. It was entirely a forensics case as the victim disappeared and there were no witnesses. The State did a piss-poor job of preserving and presenting the evidence and we jurors spent a day and a half deadlocked. Two jurors announced that they didn’t give a shit anymore and would vote with whichever majority so they could go home. When all seemed hopeless one of the jurors noticed something in the evidence photos that conclusively proved guilt, so we returned a guilty verdict including the GBH enhancements. After the trial I googled the defendant and it turned out he had been busted hundreds of times for all kinds of tweaker nonsense. I was an unpopular foreperson and barely survived a mutiny during deliberations - I made everybody verbalize their opinion on every major item of evidence, whereas a couple jurors wanted to monopolize the discussions which is what the shy people wanted. Overall it was a stressful pain in the ass but incredibly fascinating.

Yrs ago I received a jury duty packet in the mail, at that particular time I lived in Houston Texas, jury duty was in Colorado.
I immediately called the number to tell them why I could not make jury duty, this women asked me all these questions, for example, do you work? I said yes, how do you get to work, I said, I either walk to work, or I ride my bicycle.
She actually said, how long do you think it will take you to get here if you start now, I asked her if she heard what I said, I either walk or I ride my bicycle.
To make this stupid story short, I was excused from jury duty.

As soon as i tell them im a Security Officer and i back the Police 100% in there decision. They arrested the person for a resson because there guilty of committing a crime . What was the person arrested for? The person is being accused of Grand Theft Auto well there's your answer there guilty how much prof do you need ? Well they could be wrongfully accused. Maybe but the odds of that are very slim that's what the Detective and the Judge are used for to come up with a solution to the problem right ? You could just show us the evidence instead of wasting our time talking about pointless subjects that don't matter . Like where the bathroom is located. I'm sure they will find it oventuly. Sence you don't want me to waste your time and yall are cleary wasting mine how about you get to the point .

I first had jury service when I was 19 as well!!! I got drawn in to the jury box that time and I didn’t get struck so I was on jury duty for ten days. Great experience. Oddly enough this was in Seattle.
Did jury duty ten years later (10 years ago) and got drawn out of the box but as others were struck I got placed in the box so once again on a jury.
Last week I was on jury duty got drawn the highest number so I wasn’t needed (no offense to me). I wanted to serve but I was the only panelist to serve on two juries (not just jury selection but two actual juries).
A lot of cases resolve the day of the trial. Which is why your count went from 4 to 1.

I was recently called in for Jury duty on a criminal case and was excused. They said to be honest in your response to the questions. I was totally honest and said that based on my 30 year experience as a correctional officer, that roughly 95% of those arrested ended up being guilty after going through the court process. So, based on my experience I wouldn't be a great member on the Jury as I had developed a bias that the majority of defendants are guilty. Many of those I supervised admitted to crimes to other inmates prior to going to court, but had yet pled not guilty. The Judge questioned me about my feelings and it made me feel like I was put on the spot in front of the other Jurors for feeling the way I did. They say to be honest and open, but when you are you shouldn't be put on the spot. The person deserved a fair trail, but based on my experience I felt they were most were likely guilty. Hopefully the accused got a jury that did not have the same influences as I had and they were honest when asked about their biases and past experiences. In order to have fair and unbiased trial jurors have to be introspective and not be afraid to admit to any biases they may have.

We have a thing called the Sixth Amendment, and it's always on my mind when the word "Jury" is present. I admire you because your attitude is great about why we should be obligated to serve on the jury, and about the process. Most people are glad to get out of serving, but not me. The Framers of our Constitution drafted and ratified the Sixth Amendment for the reasons you indicated, but to take that a step further, _Duncan v. Louisiana_ was a Supreme Court case, which ultimately led to a ruling by the Court that a criminal defendant's denial for a jury trial by a Judge was unconstitutional. The Court held that “trial by jury in criminal cases is fundamental to the American scheme of justice, [and] that the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees a right of jury trial in all criminal cases which -- were they to be tried in a federal court -- would come within the Sixth Amendment's guarantee." This is a big reason why we get called to serve on the Jury in cases like the one you heard and considered.

So if you were summoned for two weeks does that mean you go the first day and then leave home and come back the next day?

Just got summoned for Jury Duty today. I have some health issues related to chronic pain so I’m just wondering how often I have to be there and if it’s like a full time job because if it is, I can’t physically handle it.

Jury is a waste of time, unless it is a high profile case. I then can make six figures in a matter of months. Then I can kick back and relax for the rest of my life.

Lucky you. I'm a felon. Didn't have a jury, took a plea. I'd love to get in one the process because we're empathetic. Having a clean record means you don't know the fate of the defendant.

A jury is supposed to be unbiased. You're definitely biased. You're exactly the type of person they don't want that's why felons don't get to serve on jury duty
