I went to an Anne McCaffrey book signing at a comic shop in Birmingham and we got chatting about writing and journalism. She had tickets to a preview screening and invited me alone. I was 16, and she was just so cool, so this film has always had a special place in my heart... 2 words... Space Herpes.
"Ice Pirates" was the first space parody before "Space balls". But I understood the joke because most of the Star Wars knock offs back then took themselves way too serious, and this movie was a good way of saying to hell with it let's be stupid.
I'd totally forgotten about this film, & have fond memories of it. I was born in 1974 so only ten years old when it was made, yet remember finding this a funny movie (for my younger self anyway). Have no idea how it has aged today.
Like others I have been waiting for this one. I LOVE this movie. So stupidly fun! They don't even make stupidly fun anymore, just stupid, lots and lots of stupid, but not fun.
I love this movie! I remember seeing this in the theater and thought it was both hilarious and exciting. For me it’s up there with Flash Gordon. I can watch movies like this all day. I would far rather watch something like this than a rom-com any day!
We got a VCR in 1983 so my family recorded everything we could. This movie was one of them and I must have seen it literally 100 times when I was a kid. Being 7 meant most of the jokes went way over my head, but I still loved it. My parents never would tell me why they laughed so much at the "space herpes" scene.
I saw this in the theater as a kid and it's such an underrated movie. A star-studded cast (maybe in retrospect) and decent script. While the effects were definitely cheesy even by 1984 standards, it didn't detract from it and somehow set it up to be a cult classic. Knowing now it was originally slated as a serious space adventure makes me think what that could've been like and would a whole other franchise been created. But since the genre was becoming cliche, the jokey script and B-grade feel worked. I have nothing but fond memories of it....and space herpes became part of my vernacular for a long time.
I don't recall ever seeing it in the theater but loved it every time it was shown on TV. It's been decades since I have seen it last. I would totally buy it if I found it at Wally Worlds discount DVD bin.
This is one of my alltime favorite movies. It's just good goofy fun with a great cast, interesting story, and doesn't try to be more than what it is. A Sci fi comedy.
I LOVED THIS MOVIE...if they just remade it today space herpes and all I wouldn't be mad...the kung fu robot the time warp pimp bot all of it was hilarious
Saw it on Turner Classic Movies for the first time. Same with 2001 Space Odyssey, 2010: The Year We Made Contact, Forbidden Planet, Logan's Run. Man, that channel had a lot of interesting stuff.
I was in eighth grade when this film was released and it was popular enough with the kids in my middle school that "Space Herpe" became a favorite insult for a month or two.
I loved this movie as a kid. My friend had HBO, one of the first in our neighborhood to get cable, and every time I went over there this movie would be on the TV
do enjoy your documentary videos, I am very impressed with information you present and style of and waxing of nostalgia for items released years ago it is like taking a trip back in time with old friend....awesome job!
And the robot that craps itself in fear, and the shenanigans with that guy's severed living head, and the panic of the pirates as they risk being gelded for sale as indetured servants, and the chicken-lady flirting, and the gag with the severed hand... man, it's just a movie full of weird slapstick, glued to a decent story, and I love it.
Speaking of Robert Urich, I'd recommend the 1982 film 'Endangered Species', it's a suspense/thriller kind of like an X-Files story. Has some scenes that stuck with me all these years.
First saw this when I came home from work at 1 in the morning. Woke up my wife at the time laughing, she wasn't impressed with being woken up but ended up goggling along side me.
It's an American thing...I saw this in a small theater in my local Mall when I was 14...Laugh out loud humor and smiles out of the exits...Good times!!!
I always thought 'The Ice Pirates' knew exactly what it was, a fun, sci-fi action-adventure-comedy, and it's that self-awareness that made it an underrated classic. The actors knew what it was, it was a send-up of the more serious sci-fi which began with 'Star Wars', and it's influence is definitely felt in modern sci-fi movies which incorporate comedic elements, like 'Guardians of the Galaxy'.
Robert Urich was a very good actor. He died way too young. It's rare for an actor/actress to have more than one hit TV show, but Urich is one of those actors with Vegas (1978-1981), Spenser: For Hire (1985-1988), and as host of National Geographic Explorer (1988-1995). His first film role was in the Dirty Harry sequel, Magnum Force!
This is a long time favorite of mine since I first saw it as a kid (couple of years after it released, I think). The time warp scene at the end is one of the funniest things ever filmed.
SPACE HERPE!!! I saw this flick when it first came out in theaters. It was fun. It never seemed to air on tv as I recall. Wouldnt mind checkin it out again. I think I liked it better than the Last Starfighter and Battle Beyond the Stars.
Space herpes! I was 10 and my grandparents had a pirated betamax copy of this (and a bunch of other movies I probably shouldn't have been watching like Best Little Whorehouse in Texas). I thought it was hilarious
We loved ice pirates when it first came to HBO...I think it went right to cable within a year. We also watched: life of Brian, Gloria, Fame, Pirates, Ice Pirates was a good one to rewatch... But we were like 13-16
I honestly thought I was the only person who actually Watched "Ice Pirates". I worked movie stores in the late 80s through the 90s. I never actually Saw it be RENTED
I love this movie and saw it as a teen in the theater. I never knew the budget was slashed so dramaically. For me, the dessert fight scene was the peak of the post Star Wars sci fi action to where the excitment and appeal of the genre started to wind down. Agreed Starfighter was the last...
One of the best cheesy Scfi flicks of the 80s. The time warp scene is absolutely hilarious.
Yep when I saw that giant white afro I almost died when I was a kid.
@@erikskole7669 "You looking BAD Roscoe" lol great scene
Shit yes it is!
"Mom! Dad! We won!"
That afro part was always the best part 😂😂😂😂
The Ice Pirates is a classic. A hilarious parody of swashbuckling pirate flicks and space operas.
Very problematic
The problem was that no one understand it was suppose to be a parody
Its not a parody and not a satire - thats just a rewrite of history and desperate excuses of even more desperate defenders.

I was 16, and she was just so cool, so this film has always had a special place in my heart... 2 words... Space Herpes.
Absolutely love ice pirates... actually one of the only movies I can see time and time again..
"Ice Pirates" was the first space parody before "Space balls". But I understood the joke because most of the Star Wars knock offs back then took themselves way too serious, and this movie was a good way of saying to hell with it let's be stupid.
IMO, Ice Pirates was way better than Space Balls.
My entire childhood just flashed, literally before me in the intro.
I'd totally forgotten about this film, & have fond memories of it.
I was born in 1974 so only ten years old when it was made, yet remember finding this a funny movie (for my younger self anyway).
Have no idea how it has aged today.
Have you rewatched it recently?
They shot part of Ice Pirates at the school I was going to, CalArts’ on the modular stage. I saw a good bit of the shoot that week..
Like others I have been waiting for this one. I LOVE this movie. So stupidly fun! They don't even make stupidly fun anymore, just stupid, lots and lots of stupid, but not fun.
"Space Herpes", We As Kids Used To Joke Around & Loved This Movie!! GREAT MEMORIES!!
Always enjoy re-watching Ice Pirates every so often.
How could you not mention the Space Herpes? lol
I only came here for the Space Herpes dang it
The Space Herpes is my favorite gag. . .
Space herpes was my favorite part. Lol
He did picture the space herpes creature, but the content of the jokes wasn't his focus. But that bit was hilarious at the time.
It's not something that can be explained well, because it just makes you sound silly. It's something you have to see.
I love this movie! I remember seeing this in the theater and thought it was both hilarious and exciting. For me it’s up there with Flash Gordon. I can watch movies like this all day. I would far rather watch something like this than a rom-com any day!
When they get all old when they travel through a time warp in the end is still, so damn funny! I die everytime! 😆 🤣
Dad! I'll save you!

One of my 80's favourites, along with 'They Live' and "The Hidden'... I loved the "Oil" scene.
So basically, about 99% of the blame for the movie's failure can be dropped squarely on the heads of the studio execs?
The nerds becomes filmmakers while the preps and jocks become the money people.
@@DCMarvelMultiverse Wrong. Kosher sandwich.
I love this movie. You mentioned John Matuszak, another great comedy that he was in before Ice Pirates was Caveman.
Tonda!

Every time you said "ICE" I swear it sounded like "ARSE" to me!!! Best video ever Jonny
The Ice Pirates... I will always remember it for being the first movie we rented on our brand new VCR. I was 7.
Classic. Haven't seen it in years but remember loving it.
I don't recall ever seeing it in the theater but loved it every time it was shown on TV. It's been decades since I have seen it last. I would totally buy it if I found it at Wally Worlds discount DVD bin.
Highly overlooked in scifi classics. Been recomending this to several critics . Nice to see it get some attention
Still love this film. This is one of the sci-fi movies I grew up with.
This was my favorite movie when I was 6yo, along with Explorers. I still find joy in watching robot battles and catching space herpes to this day!
ok ive watched about 20 of your videos in two days and realized "damn, this channel just earned my sub!" im glad i found you.
Thanks so much 😊Great to have you onboard
@@JonnyBaak well done, sir! ill enjoy the ride!

I must watch it, tonight. It’s a classic!
Ron Perlman is 6'1", but looks around 5'4" in this movie.
He looks 5'4" in allmost every movie. Remenber him in "The name of the rose"?
Everybody looks short next to 6'8" John Matuzak.
I loved this movie as a kid. My friend had HBO, one of the first in our neighborhood to get cable, and every time I went over there this movie would be on the TV

I can very confidently say this is the only movie I have ever seen a robot shit itself.
I always remember that one robot that unscrewed the bolt on its torsor and just falls apart. So meme worthy for today and ahead of its time.

One of my favorites. Great video!
I loved this movie. Had been looking for this movie, The Last Starfighter, and Night of the Comet, and Enemy Mine…don’t know why, I just loved them.
Good Stuff! Much obliged Jonny! :D
I like ice Pirates it's one of my favorite movies from the 80s
I've never heard about this movie and your channel. But, now I'm curious about both. Haha! You've earned a new subscriber. Greetings from Brazil!
I grew up watching this on VHS in the 80s. Watched it probably 100 times!
Always loved this movie. One of my faves

Oh yes! I remember this one. Wonderful take on the story of mysterious cattle deaths & the death of the sheriff was quite gruesome.
The stomach scene,. I bet
I saw Ice Pirates on the big screen, and loved it.
I love the Ice Pirates, so much fun...I own a dvd of it...need to watch it again tonite.

My god!!! I loved this movie so hard!! Nobody i know knew this. It was as obscure as Return to Oz!!
I LOVED this movie as a kid! Haven’t seen it in ages though.
I had this movie on VHS. Now I have it on DVD. I still use the line, "My bad chariot!"

Most underrated comedies of all time..lol...such a classic.
Loved the use of scores from UFO and Meteor.
Love this movie. Took years for it to surface on DVD and I was finally able to own it.

I loved this movie as akid!! I must have watched it 20 more times!
I have such a soft spot for this film.
Love this movie. Got to see it at the drive in when it was in “theaters”
Why do you have quote marks around “theaters”?
