Brilliant song from a brilliant album. One hundred years from now someone will pick up the album Time Passages and start listening to it and feel like I felt, "this is fucking unbelievable."

Hahahah, amen. I got into Al Stewart when I bought the "Year of the Cat" record in the late 1990s so my friend and I could listen to it ironically on his parents' record player. About a week later I was buying his whole back catalogue.

The ghost of revolution still prowls the Paris streets, down all the restless centuries it wanders incomplete, it speaks inside the cheap red wine of cafe summer nights, its red and amber voices call the cars at traffic lights.

“Palace of Versailles” (1978) might be called a hard-core historical folk song in the same vein as “Manuscript” (1970), although unlike the first such composition in this genre, it includes keyboards and an electric guitar solo. This is also a political piece, contrasting the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon with the 1968 student riots.
The music is based on “The Earl of Salisbury,” a Pavan by the 16th century English composer William Byrd (circa 1540 - 1623) of the Renaissance era. 💙🎶💚

That intro melody is from the Late Renaissance. Originally for the keyboard but covered by the lute players of the day. Pavan, "The Earl of Salisbury" by William Byrd(c. 1542-1643). I know having played it on classical guitar for 40 years.

The wands of smoke are rising
From the walls of the Bastille
And through the streets of Paris
Runs a sense of the unreal
    The Kings have all departed
    There servants are nowhere
    We burned out their mansions
    In the name of Robespierre
    And still we wait
    To see the day begin
Our time is wasting in the wind
    Wondering why
    Wondering why, it echoes
Through the lonely palace of Versailles
    Inside the midnight councils
    The lamps are burning low
On you sit and talk all through the night
But there's just no place to go
    And Bonaparte is coming
With his army from the south
    Marat your days are numbered
And we live hand to mouth
    While we wait
    To see the day begin

    THE PALACE OF VERSAILLES
(by Al Stewart From TIME PASSAGES)
The wands of smoke are rising /
From the walls of the Bastille /
And through the streets of Paris /
Runs a sense of the unreal /
The Kings have all departed /
There servants are nowhere /
We burned out their mansions /
In the name of Robespierre /
And still we wait /
To see the day begin /
Our time is wasting in the wind /
    Wondering why /
Wondering why, it echoes /
Through the lonely palace of Versailles /
Inside the midnight councils /
The lamps are burning low /
On you sit and talk all through the night /
But there's just no place to go / 아무 데도 갈 곳이 없어.
And Bonaparte is coming /
With his army from the south /
Marat your days are numbered /
And we live hand to mouth /
While we wait /
The ghost of revolution /
Still prowls the Paris streets /
Down all the restless centuries /
It wonders incomplete /
It speaks inside the cheap red wine /
Of cafe summer nights /
Its red and amber voices /
Call the cars at traffic lights /
Why do you wait /

My goodness, I hear you on that one! It is very mesmerizing. The video of the ill-fated Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI adds to the effect so well.

Enigma Variations, when I first saw this wonderful film, I thought of this song for the very longest time, and the fact that someone made a video for it is certainly a dream-come-true.
