    Great video. I found your channel when learning more about florida native plants. I love the front yard garden... Such a good use instead of the usual lawn.
    I'm in saint petersburg as well but it's my first time gardening in florida. The growing season seems the opposite of everywhere I lived up north!
    I've got a bunch of lovely seedlings in portable containers that i started about 2 weeks ago but worry about planting them in a permanent location because of the heat and heavy rain especially ( powdery mildew, nasty bugs, etc).
    When would you feel safe about putting them in ground?
    Cheers

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! It depends what you are growing. I would keep young seedlings in semi shade. I think they will be challenged right now with the heat and humidity. Remember that in Florida classic vegetables get 4 to 6 hours of full sun because subtropical sun rays are stronger than sun rays up north. So they need less time. Also plants like peppers and tomatoes which are native to the Caribbean and Central America would naturally grown on forest perimeters. So the more you mimic that idea, the happier they will be. Best of luck!

    Just found your channel and am appreciating your content very much. So informative! (I will be yanking all the lantana camaras around the property ASAP after watching your talk on those! Yikes!)
    I'm a lifelong gardener, just moved to Florida from the PNW. Working on getting my garden started and boy am I in a huge learning curve. I have questions!! I'm looking for step-by-step instructions on how you started your garden area but haven't been able to find what I'm looking for in your playlists.
    Did you remove the sod first? Did you lay down anything before your first layer of mulch or did you just smother it all out with the mulch? If I don't need to remove the sod, that would be a game changer.
    Also, in one of your videos, you talked about laying down mulch and then bringing in soil? Can you explain the process or steer me to a video that explains it? 😁
    Sugar Sand and crazy grasses. Oh my!

      @@WildFloridian I wondered about that. As the mulch breaks down it's going to rob the plants of nitrogen. Seems like there needs to be enough of a soil barrier between roots and decomposing mulch, am I right? So I'm doing a little experiment... Laid down cardboard, then about 8 inches of mulch. Better to go deep than shallow, in my experience. I pulled the mulch back and created a 16" diameter hole down to the cardboard and filled it with good top soil, biochar, and compost. Planted some Echinacea in each hole. Covered planting area with mulch. What do you think about that process? I'm thinking of doing the same thing for my herb bed.
