A few volunteers, but mostly Americans waited for someone else to fight the war for them.

@@SonnyBubba two exercise courage is up to the individual. My wife and I were the first to be married in the new church building of the congregation that I joined. Before I came to the church, the members had begun to build it by faith, with the news of the money northern material to finish the building but they proceeded with the project with their own tools.
One day as they were working, they saw a fire at a farm down the road. All of the men from the church ran down the road and helped put out the fire. The owner was surprised at the courage and quick work of our men. She supplied all the number needed to complete the Church building.

The Doolittle raid sent two messages to Japan: (1) the US was at least as aggressive and determined as the Japanese in this war they started (2) their Emperor continued to live not because his military had protected him, but by our choice. And the later had to send a shiver down their spines.

The Doolittle raid had far-reaching effects all out of proportion to the actual damage done. Apart from sticking a thumb in the Japanese eye, it caused them to pull back air assets and surface forces that otherwise would have been available during the initial stages of the war, possibly making the first moves into the Solomans more costly
