almost all the old monsters correspond pretty much to level 3. All it takes to make them compatible is for some fan to "rate" the old monster, and give them a level based on how tough they are. Also, you can just make a monster with some tough old monsters and new weaker monsters. The operation does not sound like money grab to me because no one would buy old monsters again if there is no difference other than a number 1,2, or 3 printed on them.
Sounds like some good changes. My concern is whether the old cards are compatible with the new game. The monsters seem incompatible due to not having the level designation. Without such backwards-compatibility, this new version feels like a money grab to get people to buy all the old material again - in a revised form. I don't tolerate that in RPG systems, and I won't go for it in board games, either.
I have not yet delved into the Thunderstone dungeons, but with the positive feedback coming from so many about this new expansion/edition, I just may grab a torch and head on in. I understand the 'epic Thunderstone' varient is included in the rules now. Do you play using the 'epic' varient, or do you use the basic game rules? Thank you for your review of what this new expansion brings to Thunderstone.
I love thunderstone :) but thunderstone: advance looks soooooooo much more fun! :D Definitely going to pick it up :D , thanks for the great review! ^_^

I love the new card design. And the effects seem much more clear this time around.

I'm looking forward to this next iteration of thunderstone.
There's a compatibility guide now from the official site.
