Hello from S.C.! I had the same surgery! Those nose tubes...maaaan....pure torture. I thought I had a tumor. The headache, I couldn't stand, sit, or sleep...without it hurting. My husband kept telling me in his Arnold Schwarzenegger voice, "It's not a tuma". The only drawback from my surgery is... I get strangled in the shower easy. It's like a straight shot of water down my throat. They opened me up really wide! I know you're happy!

Can't believe I just watched someone talk about their nose for 20 minutes. Funny enough I actually found it entertaining. You are lucky you have a very likeable personality, as I expect if many other people talked about the same subject it would have been difficult to stay interested.

When I was 18 I had to have surgery on my nose, I was told I couldn't go outside for 2 weeks! The recovery room was the weirdest experience of my life. I'm pretty sure I told one of the nurses I would like to marry her.
I can totally appreciate the feeling of being able to breathe through your nose for the first time in a long time..congratulations.

Great story. Well told! For those of us that have been down similar surgical paths, we feel you. I've had two knees replaced, an abdominal aorta aneurysm repair, and I still hung on every word. I think I enjoyed your super smile most of all as you told your story. Life changing events are awesome. Follow your doctor's order. We'll all be here when you come back to the shop.

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. So much of what you said here is exactly what I went through many years ago.
Growing up I always had breathing issues and could never breath through my nose. I went in for surgery (terrified of needles, wrestling off the nurses, I was 10); and that first breath I had through my nose when all the packing was removed is something I'll never forget. For a day or two after I remember noticing that the air has a weird smell about it, but its something you get used to. LOL, and the plasticy snot! That was 25 years ago now. Following that surgery and my first night at home my mum kept checking in on me because I wasn't snoring at all and she thought I had stopped breathing!
I also had the same experience with glasses. I got my first pair when I was about 12 and I remember leaving the optometrist and looking at a tree for the first time and realising that its normal to be able to see leaves. I always thought that everyone just see's a big green blur, because that was all I had ever known.
Anyway, thats the end of my story. Check out the CleanSpace Respirator by PafTec. Medical grade silicon mask (full or half) with a powered respirator that sits at the base of the neck. No annoying hoses and clean fresh air. Also fantastic in summer because you aren't having to labour as much to breath through a standard particulate mask. Highly recommended. Oh, and because its a powered respirator it is also positive pressure, meaning that you don't have to have a perfect fit in order for it to work properly. I've supplied these masks to several of my employees (chemical manufacturer) and they love them. Best respirator on the market.

I never comment on videos but I just had to say your depiction of a needle panic attack was spot on. I'm the same way. Had to get my blood drawn and I was a faint, crying, laughing, cold sweating mess. The nurses felt bad and sent me a card in the mail.

    Hi Jay,
Hope you're feeling well. I had septoplasty about 6 weeks ago. Had the same sort of issues as you, and had put it off for six years or so. My septum was deviated completely to one side, so my right nostril didn't work at all.
Recovering well here, and it's amazing to be able to breathe through my nose properly!
Hope your recovery comes as well as mine has (so far!).
    Cheers,
    Ste.

Glad to hear your surgery went well. I had the same surgery back in 1999. I also had polyps in my sinuses that were removed too. I can relate to every aspect of your story, from the anesthetic, to getting the tubs pulled out. I remember sleeping through the first couple days after the surgery because the painkillers knocked me out. My story is a little different when it comes to get the tubs pulled out though.
I was 17 at the time and my dad took me to the docs office to get the tubes pulled out. The doctor sat in a chair facing me with his knees in between mine. The doctor didn't numb anything though and I can remember how it felt when the gauze and plastic peeled off the inside of my nose and back of my throat. The tubing and gauze came out caked in dry blood and snot and I almost passed out from the pain. It felt like getting punched in the nose or having your septum pierced. I look over at my dad and his face it completely white. My dad then gets up and says "I'm not sticking around for round two" and leaves the room! The doctor then does the exact same thing with the other nostril and it felt like another punch in the face.
I also remember taking the first breath and how amazing it was. Anyways welcome to "Straight Septum Club"!

You sure look happy Jay. That smile really suits you. Your creativity need not be restricted to wood. Your skills are easily transferred to other media that don't produce such harmful dust. Sheet metal work is one example that immediately comes to mind. Time to explore alternatives. Later, when the 8 weeks is over, you can combine whatever you've discovered with your woodworking. Thanks for your story.

I've gotten to deal with my dad having panic attacks in the hospital many times. And once to get him into an ambulance while he was having chest pain. The EMTs couldn't talk him into it. Glad everything worked out for you and a forced extended vacation from the shop will make you appreciate your time there when you get back in.

While you are resting and recuperating, and since you are not allowed to be in the shop, consider this...you are just about the best SketchUp teacher on TH-cam because of the way you explain what you are doing and narrate the various commands while you are drawing. Hey Jay, I know the feeling man. I had knee surgery a while back, when I was 22. Complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and severe tear of both the medial and lateral meniscus. The surgery took 3 hours and afterward the surgeon said it was bad enough that he debated about whether or not to put a fake knee in. He didn't, but the operation still involved some bone drilling and whatnot. Needless to say that put me out of commission for a while. Now I'm doing great. Modern medicine really is quite an accomplishment for humanity. I'm sure in a few weeks you'll be back in the shop and everything will be right as rain.

I know exactly what you mean about your experiences you had from having the surgery. I had the same nose surgery about 6 or 7 years ago. It was life changing for me as well in many ways. It was so worth it in my opinion. I believe the "out of nowhere" emotions coming up and out was another "blockage" in the body that wasn't physical and that's why it's so great. Like a dam opening the flood gates wide open for good. Hope your recovery goes as well as mine did. Best of luck to you

Enjoyed your journey Jay. It's a brand new day for you. Glad to hear you recorded this memory. The breathing well for the first time in a long time must smell sweet. It's the little things that count in life, right?. That clear, full breath in your nose. Awesome! Yes, your wife is awesome too. Me thinks an early Valentine gift just may be order.
When you get it all together. Take her out for a fun thing; dinner, movie, whatever you guys enjoy. You got a new life experience. Love the 4" air ducts reference. Can you quantify the CFM of your new nose? :) Enjoy!
Follow the Dr's orders. When you want to bail out and do something the Dr wouldn't approve. Which most of us contemplate 'cheating'. And if you say, 'no not me'. Well you're either lying or a saint. In either case, well....Think of living the rest of your life breathing well. Or going backwards with the same old breathing issues you had? Your clear thinking will prevail. Be well Jay. You have a loyal band of followers. Heal up, enjoy the time off and kick some ass upon your return. You can do this. You've got this. We have your back and faith in you!

Hilarious! I had EXACTLY the same thing going on from an old football injury (broken nose). The bone spur grew completely across the right nostril so I couldn't use it at all. It was a "you got to see this" event for the doctor and his staff. Boy, I didn't realize how much air had not been able to get through. While it took thirty years to get the surgery, it had a great outcome. When the splints come out, it brings a whole new definition to the word uncomfortable. Good work and congrats on manning up! I used to panic when watching a movie where they taped peoples mouths shut. Being able to breath is awesome!

Hi Jay, I had a the same surgery and I am so glad to be over it as I was waiting for it for a few years before I got 18 and I could have it. It was a nice reminder of how relieved I felt after it. I didn't remember most of it as it war horrible experience but it was totally worth it.
I hope you get better soon!

Congrats! i'm so happy this worked out well for you. I had a very similar surgery and was laughing along with your experience because it was very similar to mine. Hope the rest of your recovery is speedy and that you don't go crazy being out of the shop :)

Jay, I'm so happy to see you back on the air (pun intended).
Thanks for sharing your story. It's great to hear people talking about real life stuff, including the excitement, fears, panic, crying, happy memories, and pure joy of breathing clear and having this burden lifted. As another commenter said, we'd just love for you to keep posting pretty much anything. Sketchup would be great, although I get that you may feel like you put the whole process out there already. Maybe you could ask the doc about hand tool work like planes and chisels; surely shavings and chips wouldn't have the same effect as sawdust. It could be your opportunity to learn some woodcarving?
Anyway, the main thing is to take care of yourself and make sure you stay healthy and well. You said you were "pretty sure" you have this down time covered as far as income, but is there anything we can do to help? How can we give back?

I had the same septioplasty surgery a few years back so I know what you had to go through. It was worth the pain I rarely get sinus infections anymore. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the rest of your recovery.

Good job Jay I am happy for you. I have been trying to get my son to do the same thing (I will send this to him and pay attention to the last few minutes) for a few years now.
If you get bored, you can always do a Sketch Up video or two. We always learn a trick or two from each one.
Hang in there and thanks for sharing your story, it was a good one. I bet your food tastes better too.
