We talk about Hong Kong as if they had democracy when the British was in charge for 99 yrs . Chris Pattern the last governor like all British governors of Hong Kong before him was imposed on the Hong Kong people by London with not even a pretence of elections .
Though I strongly support the Hong Kong people in their fight for their rights against Beijing . The British should be the last people to talk about democracy in Hong Kong .

Oh yeah right, so the fomer coloniser gets to write the rules in a territory that doesn't even belong to them? That doesn't even make any sense to me at all, as far as I'm concerned Hong Kong belongs to China NOT the British, okay? How can the former coloniser the UK have any moral right or legality to say anything, let alone demand anything from China? Its not British territory anymore. The very fact that under British rule as a British colony, Hong Kong had no political freedom, no votes no elections whatsoever, so I find it very arrogant, & very hypocritical & egotistical of the UK government & their politicians to make all these arrogant, hypocritical & ignorant statements demanding things from China, despite British history over Hong Kong & China. British have no right to say anything to China over Hong Kong, period!!!!!!!

The Hong Kong 1967 leftist riots were large-scale riots between pro-communists and their sympathisers, and the Hong Kong government. The waves of bombings did not subside until October 1967. In December, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai ordered the leftist groups in Hong Kong to stop all bombings; and the riots in Hong Kong finally came to an end. The disputes in total lasted 18 months.

Economy in China means everything now. No matter the government is good or not, as long as the government takes care of its own people living standard, it’s a good government. As pertaining to the system of China, the government could adjust it year by year, but first of all is to lift up people from poverty. That’s the first priority of China’s communist party.

Total BS. Why don't Patten ask the sitting British government and the British if they are willing to admit the dissidents especially those youth rioters into Britain. We all know the answer, right? Genuine HK locals and the majority of HongKongers wish Mr Patten to stay out of HK affairs please.

Please refer to how American sees it: th-cam.com/video/gvkfwkKbBSQ/w-d-xo.html
I used to have the travel document that issued by the colonial government: a British Passport. (I am qualified because I born there.)
However, This is only a travel document that allows HONGKIE to travel or visit The Great Britian no more than 6 months.
If British really cares what they left behind, open the door and allow HK Protester to move to London. THEM all Hongkie will be happy.
The normal Hongkie get back their Peaceful living that they like, and the protester can enjoy their freedom to protest in London, I believe it will be best of British as well, as the violence is classified as freedom to protest in British law.

I don't agree with Patten on Brexit or his simpering remoaning, but he did sterling work in Hong Kong up to the hand-over. Doing the best he could, in the face of Foreign Office capitulation to China, to install a permanent democracy. Losing his seat in 1992 was the best thing that ever happened 2 million Hong Kongese.
My main regret over that period was then those Hong Kong BRITISH citizens were not given the right to move to the UK. That stain cannot be removed from us. It's not like we haven't taken many more people in - and ones that don't even consider themselves British, since.
