I think they were their own distinctive culture and while the southern tribes might have been more related to the greeks and northern tribes to the Illyrians, the Epirotes as a whole made up their own distinctive ethnos. Claims that Epirus is a greek region was one of the justifications for the Cham massacre and to this day there are terrorist attacks on the Southern Albanian border by fringe groups that demand Northern Epirus be handed to Greece.

@Thersites I would stray away from calling Epirus Greek or anything else. I think they were their own distinctive culture and while the southern tribes might have been more related to the greeks and northern tribes to the Illyrians, the Epirotes as a whole made up their own distinctive ethnos. Claims that Epirus is a greek region was one of the justifications for the Cham massacre and to this day there are terrorist attacks on the Southern Albanian border by fringe groups that demand Northern Epirus be handed to Greece.
