    History has always been my favorite subject, every teacher and professor I’ve had made me loveeeeee it ! I was a nursing major (3.8) I just switched my major to African American history/social studies education 7-12 . I’m so excited to actually do something I’m passionate about

    I really loved this video. I was shocked when I realized people hate Social Studies . I teach Civics, Social Justice and World History and I have made it my mission to decolonize Civic and Historical education . One of the things that has help with this is to teach backwards. I start with the current times and work my way backwards . This has been transformative. My kids have really increased their understanding of conflicts and built empathy and compassion for other marginalized groups .

    Thanks for the great video! I majored in history but didn’t take any education credits because I was double majoring and felt like I needed to get out of school before racking up more loans. I’ve always wanted to be a history teacher and I’m now looking into going back for a license or getting a provisional one if a school will hire me :) I share the same sentiment I always loved! history class. I am shocked when people say how boring it was but I realize like you say, maybe they were just learning facts and dates and not really getting into the past. I’ve always liked to learn as much as I can about my favorite things and I felt like majoring in history allowed me geek out all the time.. I loved my college experience as a history nerd. Thanks for inspiring me to accomplish my goal take care!

    Love it! I'm not going to be a history teacher but the principal still applies! Make my subject fun, interactive, and relevant, never stop learning and being up to date with my content was what I took away from this. Loved this video. Very important for anyone! As you said being a history teaches has a stigma about it. Same with my subject. So this can go for any subject that has a... stereotypical resented look to it! Thank you so much for this!

    I taught social studies for approximately three years, what I understand from today's children, don't be too careless or stiff, look for what is happening at the moment whether starting from trends or news, then combine it with the material you will teach as best you can perhaps, always connected to their preferences but firm and fun. the latter always prioritizes what students need now, not what you need. sometimes they don't care about our expertise, but it's how we convey it that they hear.

    Thanks for the video. I am not a teacher, but I would have loved to have you as a teacher. The great thing is; I'm from Belgium, but the best history teacher I ever had was an American too. He was the best and used many methods you just quoted. My history teachers when I was in middle and high school just bored me to death... (and I always loved history, I'm a medieval reenactor when that stupid virus doesn't prevent gatherings or feasts). When I was at school all had to be learned by heart and she spoke with that droning voice... aaargh! Your way of explaining and having kids remember is waaaaaay better. Thank you

    I love history when they are being delivered in story form and engaging, but with my experience in schools since I was a kid made me hate History to the point I rather learn Math than have to memorize everything in the textbook to take the exam.

    My school is the same way, as they only offer majors and concentrations rather than specifically targeting what you’ll be teaching while in udergrad. I was a history major but I switched to Lib. Studies concentrating in Elementary Ed. while still minoring in history. Always wanted to teach history, but lately I’m interested in Special Ed!

    Hey Amanda! This is extremely helpful! I am currently getting my bachelors in secondary History education. I find it very hard to retain all this information with lots of details. As a teacher how do you retain all this information. I'm afraid i won't know enough content to be an afficent teacher.

    • @amandaros3
      @amandaros3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi! I completely understand that feeling. For a long time i felt inadequate compared to so many of my coworkers and people who have been teaching for so many years! I would say start small. Whatever is the first unit you are teaching, try and gain as much knowledge about that unit at that one time. You're not Google and definitely you cannot expect yourself to be lol. One Unit at a time. AND students will ask questions, its ok to go to the comp and look up the answer, and with time you will remember the questions students ask and you will slowly become more and more prepared.
      It's ok to have post-it notes of specific dates or events written down next to you. You are there to teach...not just teach content...but teach students how to analyze, sort through texts. The content is one important aspect of being a teacher but its not the entire thing. You will be ok! Learn additional info in chunks when you are teaching units. That would be my "step 1" of advice. Hope this helps!

      Let your school district know that you’re interested in teaching and that you have a bachelors; they may be able to guide you through an alternative licensing program to get your teaching license.

    omg I have a fun idea if I was a history teacher I would "dress up" as the main charater in every new topic. My student would walk in to seeing "George Washington" standing in the head of the class I would use first perspective when "George Washington" is speaking I would use examples following the words "I, me, myself" ect. And maybe even dress the class room in different eras/time periods to help them " feel" like they are there. Just tonight I have decided I might go back to school to be a history/ mythology teacher. I'm browsing videos research to learn and gather information to make absolutely sure this is something I want. Thank you so much xx.

      Hey Noah, best thing for you would probably be to major in history with a minor in education or vice versa. Some states require that you actually major in your field of study so know your state! Also you get a lot more subject based content when you major in history. There’s benefits to both but make sure you talk to your current/future college advisors and current teachers. Cheers!
