It's great that Betsy Palmer appreciated the Pamela Voorhees role before she passed away. She was fantastic in the movie. Her photo as Pamela with Part 7 Jason is my favorite Mother's Day card.

A classic of classics. My friend recently did a marathon of the films, and I commend her cause it was her first time seeing the first film and she was unspoiled of the iconic twist all these years later.

My mother watched this movie on tv years ago. As you might expect, it's not her typical movie(she was very bored that night). But the ironic thing is, she had noticed the name Betsy Palmer in the tv listings..so when the movie was almost over, and she still hadn't seen Palmer, well, the mystery was pretty much spoiled for her!

    • @johnrunion5357

there is no twist. they just introduce a character we have never seen before.

@@johnrunion5357 Amen. I was going to comment, "Twist? I didn't notice one". Pamela just shows up and introduces herself. Is that actually a plot twist to some viewers? Wow. There's no mystery, no "iconic" twist. Unfortunately.

@@eduardo_corrochio i really wish friday the 13th 1980 had trimmed off a few moments of it's running time from the film as it is and used those very few moments of the film to actually INTRODUCE mrs. voorhees. 'hey, kids! meet mrs. voorhees. she will be in charge of the kitchen, the cooking and all of the supplies this summer!' then show her being actually protective and helpful to the kids in her charge; the way it should have been done for her son. then have a shot showing how proficient she is with a knife. just FIVE minutes TOPS. how hard would that have been? they make a film and set it up to be a who done it? and then the killer is someone we have never seen before in the movie!

@@johnrunion5357 You make some very cogent and valid points. But honestly, showing her prowess with a knife (or any weapon) would be giving it away.

10:43/ Gotta love that literary Easter egg on the dashboard. THE GODFATHER makes it's way into the horror genre! Being from The Bronx, I always appreciated the fact that Camp Crystal was located in New Jersey. You might notice the Tri-State area gets a shout-out in the second film with a camp counselor wearing a New York Yankees hat!❤

0:42 I remember Fridays! I used to watch it late at night. Michael Richards aka Kramer was on it. I also remember Betsey Palmer doing Knots Landing in the late 80s as Joan Van Ark's aunt. So, she did do other projects after the film.

They all have their scary moments. But the first 4 have a connection, a mood and a style that elevates them above those that followed.
The 3rd film is the best in the franchise for me.
It’s got the best final girl in the series and the best Jason.
Even though Chris is responsible for every death in the movie, she is so believable and resourceful in taking Jason down.
And he was at his most menacing in this film too.

Again, I love this new series! Well done everyone at JoBlo!
I love the Friday The 13th franchise as a whole (with the first 8 obviously being standouts), but dammit if the original one is my favorite of them all! There’s such a cloud of innocence to it that just resonates with me. Plus, being filmed not too far from where I grew up, it’s nice to see the New Jersey I know and love any time I watch it!
Just imagine if Friday The 13th was just a one-off film…..we’d be talking about it today like we do My Bloody Valentine, The Burning, and The Prowler, wondering “what if” there was ever a sequel to it!

My memories of horror movies came when i was about 7 or 8 when we got our first VCR as it cost $500 at the time, and then one day came home and it was gone!!!! come to find out my mom lent i to a friend. Then a week or two later, we got it back along with tapes and tapes of dubbed movies. Friday the 13th 1 and 2 were part of those. Body Double was another. It was so fun to watch them and then for like a couple weeks came home and there was a huge sattilte dish in the front yard that my dad was testing or borrowing. Then got to see others like Robocop and Poltergeist. My god those were the greatest times ever!!! todays youth has no idea what they are missing with their noses buried into their phones.

    • @petermulder7480

VCR/cable/satellite watching movies at home was very special in the beginning...
Nowadays I can't hold my interest in Netflix for 10 min before I take my phone or switch movies again...
The TV guide was important in the 80s and watching a film was like going to the theatre.
I saw a lot of movies just because they were on TV that night..
...and enjoyed the feeling of watching them in the dark on a small TV with bad antenna...
Never got that feeling back and wouldn't have wanne missed it for the world...
      Great memories I have from
Terence Hill & Bud Spencer movies
      Emannuel films.
Hammer films in black in white in the middle of the night.
      Greatness

I'm from the UK originally and one thing you couldn't do was sneak into an R-rated (aka X-rated in the UK at the time) film as a kid. In those days, ushers checked your ticket on the way in and they stayed in the theater for the film. No way a 12-year old boy who looked like a 9 year old was getting into see Friday the 13th in 1980. :)

I sometimes imagine a Friday the 13 franchise with Pamela V as the killer ... just so fully charged with evil revenge and filled with icy anger at camp counselors. She was interesting in the short time she appeared in the first film; Jason, the big quiet lummox, bored me silly as the movies slogged on and on. LOL

That was a good summary of the time and the movie I saw it at the drive-in theater on opening night and even although everybody was in their own car you could hear screams coming from other cars and people with also blow the horns after a kill. Anyway as far as you saying nobody expected the middle-aged woman you're right about that but we've seen it before in movies like Strait jacket with Joan Crawford. And whatever happened to a aunt Alice with Geraldine page as the killer and Ruth Gordon as the final girl. Both movies you should review. I mistakenly mentioned Homicidal, that was the 1951 transexual killer slasher. one of the earliest thats never mentioned.

Friday the 13th work’s really well the first watch when you know zero about the plot. Allot of the things that make part 1 hard to watch the 2nd+ plus time (mainly its meandering pace) works in its favor for its first viewing. Its not a fantastic movie but the ending is awesome, features many memorable kills and is much better than it gets credit for.

You gotta love how the trucker tells Annie a story about all the murders, then drops her off in the middle of nowhere instead of driving her to the camp! And.. in the early days of these movies , no one knew what a “final girl” was, so no one watching Annie thought she was a final girl. After she got killed, those of us watching the movie when it came out thought , “Who’s next?” No one saw Annie as the final girl. Not everything is the opening of “Scream”.

Friday The 13th 1980 is unique in not being the best or one of the best films in its franchise. Halloween 1978, A Nightmare On Elm Street 1984, Scream 1, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974, Phantasm 1 etc. are among the best in their series. Friday 1 is... In the top six maybe?
    For me:
    1. Jason Lives
    2. Part 4
    3. Part 2
    4. The reboot
    5. The New Blood
    6. The original
    Yep.

GIve a thumbs up here if, like me, you were totally thrown off when they just suddenly introduced Pamela Voorhees 3/4 into this movie and revealed that she was the psycho/murderer of the story. Ridiculous. We didn't see this character at all in the movie before she shows up. They should have put her in the movie somewhere earlier as a minor character, working at the diner or something. It's nuts that the script just brings her in like some stranger off the street! Ugh. _That_ reason is why Friday the 13th is not a great slasher movie to me.

The best slasher is the 1978 Halloween. Then for the runners-up we have the 1974 Black Christmas. Then the 1992 Candyman.
