In the Wolof language the units are limited to five. After five, you start adding things again. Five means "juroom" so to say six you say "juroom-benn" which literally means "Five and one". So to say seven we say "juroom-niaar" (seven and two). On the other hand, ten means "fukk", so to say fifty you say "juroom-fukk" literally (Five times ten)

I don't speak wolof at all, but it seems like they're counting only to the 5. For example in the 30s (where I noticed it) it sounded like 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 35 and 1, 35 and 2, 35 and 3, 35 and 4. Definitely very interesting. Maybe someone who speaks wolof can shed a light on this. Edit: It seems like higher numbers are also affected. 66 for example sounded like it's "50 and 10 and 5 and 1". Fascinating.
Exactly ! Our system is based on 5. When people says 20 they basically say "four fives". That's because of the 5 fingers on each hand, ours ancestors used to count like this
It’s sad that your country doesn’t even speak its own language in their daily life and instead use a foreign language soon you’re language will die out and your culture might follow and people will lose their national identity
@@hallooos7585 Don't talk about what you don't know. French is one of the national languages of the country and is taught in school. People mix French and wolof.
