so you know ive grown up listening to irish/celtic music its allways been in my blood and bones and i allways enjoy playing it and im a young person in america XD
I also play Celtic music, scottish/irish/shetland/French/etc, and have all my life. What i was jokingly highlighting is that not all folk songs are of Irish origin. I love irish songs, scottish songs, and all the rest, but I credit the nation's origin.
This man has literally saved me from the endless nights of crying. Just listening to this makes me relax and get lost in his voice. There needs to be more artists like him. Thank you Ed, for staying true to you.
the thing i love about him the most is that he is just casual. he is sitting there in his jeans, hoodie and scuffed shoes. it makes him seem more relatable.
I think that his voice cracking makes it sound better actually it makes it sound more realistic and seriously tons of people can't do what he does so I think he's awsome
Why didn't I find this post earlier? This is perfect. My dad (born in 1916) would have loved this. Me (born 1950) and my daughter (born 1992) have found some common ground.
people need to stop bitching, he is a amazing singer unlike so many artists these days who use auto tune or lip sync, one of a kind this bloke keep it up mate!!!!
such an amazing young man , to sell out shows all over the world , yet sit for a small group of people and give them his genuine time. . . .awesome.. . . . .Willy
i saw him live and just let me tell you guys, he puts his everything into each and every performance, whether if there's many people or not, he just is a true artist, and thats so rare now a days, seeing him live just makes you feel so calm and its an awesome experince, its totally worth every dime
im very appreciated to get to see him live. this man saved my life from ending and i was given the oppurtunity to thank him. best moment of my entire life. thank you ed
Funny thing is... I don't even think it was a voice crack at 1:36. legit think that's the way he sings it, listen to his live version of this. It doesn't even sound bad at all
A crack. That was definitely a crack, but, the way he made up for it, and matched the following word's tune is a solid evidence that Ed is a musical genius. Loved him since I first heard his "I see fire" back in '13, then I indulged myself to multiply then plus (a bit backward, I know.) up until now (divide) and discovered how majestic his writing singing skills are. With his vocal majesty and emotion filled singing, he can turn vocal cracks into a tone as beautiful as well-maintain racks. 😆
The first time I ever heard this song was when my family sat around and sang it at my Uncle's funeral. I was nine, but I'll never forget it. What a beautifully haunting song. Ed's voice just makes it that much sweeter.
GOOD! My goodness, did he need an improvement! I'm glad he is not satisfied with being okay, but has gone on to improve himself. However, there is still room for improvement -- even in 2017. Because, to be honest ... it's not 2017 anymore. :)
2:44 that's a sound cut through to the soul, this is a beautiful song, sung with a beautiful voice. Edit: This is cool I may have never heard this traditional Irish music had it not been for Ed Sheeran.
[Verse 1] Of all the money that e'er I had I spent it in good company And all the harm that e'er I've done Alas it was to none but me And all I've done for want of wit To memory now I can't recall So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all [Verse 2] Of all the comrades that e'er I had They are sorry for my going away And all the sweethearts that e'er I had They would wish me one more day to stay But since it falls unto my lot That I should rise and you should not I'll gently rise and I'll softly call Good night and joy be with you all [Verse 3] A man may drink and not be drunk A man may fight and not be slain A man may court a pretty girl And perhaps be welcomed back again But since it has so ought to be By a time to rise and a time to fall Come fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all Good night and joy be with you all
i still remember talking to him about this song and how beautiful he did it in Vancouver , and talking about how it reminds me of my grandmas funeral. He looked me in the eyes and thanked me for that and told me that he wants this song performed at his funeral. He is really a beautiful person who deserves everything he gets
Ive been through the worst year yet with my son ill and my husband leaving me and my 3 kids but u no what every time i listen to eds voice it makes me feel magical! To meet him personally once in my life to thank him for his beautiful music would be abs amazing i really hope my wish comes true some day! Love shelly😘
Hun it sucks life sucks then you die lol but you could have had a hell lot worse my father died my best friend And my old landlords husband died and then my cousin had cancer that's just turned twenty I'm just saying count your blessings when and where they come from and but best of luck :)
Jenneca Matuszak Those people did choose to leave. Having your husband leave? Thats a choice. Dont push your sorrows on to hers to make them less than. Her pain is hers, you dont have to compete. Realize this is 2 years ago but seriously.
beautiful voice, amazing talent ..I am very glad, we know somebody like Ed Sheeran, because he is here for us to cuddle our damaged souls .. I love you Ed ♥
and i mean the dude is sitting down, no, hunching over while singing this, that is even harder to do than singing good while standing, ed you are a gift
A purely beautiful voice! I am sure all those who went out if their way to click dislike on this are volunteering their time to help their fellow man, like Ed does. Gorgeous song!
I'm late to this amazing rendition ... but omg! The focus is so much on the words and not the pretentious performances that litter the internet. Well done young man.
"The Parting Glass" is a Scottish and Irish traditional song, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends. It was purportedly the most popular parting song sung in Scotland before Robert Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne". The song is also hugely popular in Ireland and amongst Irish communities.
I LOVE THIS SONG ❤️🙏🏽 My late father was half Irish (his mom) and half Dominican (his dad) so we heard EVERY kind of music in our home and this song is one that makes me think of my dad❤️🙏🏽
I was wondering what I would do if that happened to me. :) Honestly, I would probably have to re-sing the song in order to get it right. But either way, you should NOT have a cracking voice midway through a song - it's an indication of bad technique. Vocalization is actually an art - and that is what most people are woefully ignorant about.
The parting glass one of the best irish songs made makes you feel proud to be irish tbh and ed makes it sound really good his voice and his passion just overwhelms me hes just an angel in disguise ❤❤✌
Finally, someone who doesn’t need to do this song with a defined beat behind it... simply sung as if speaking a series of phrases with having its own individual pace as the phrase needs - far more in keeping with a departed soul giving one last toast to those left behind on their way o the everafter...
I left this video as a comment on my ancestry tree for my 4th great grandfather James Cannedy and as his father John was born in Ireland and his mother Faithe Ann Horn was born in Scotland. It must have been quite a vibrant life in Darlington NC for them
I swear his voice needs to become a candle scent
or a perfume
wouldnt be much of a scent....
Sean Adams accent?
Christina marie preach to you girl, been trying to describe his voice and found the perfect definition
Hahaha best comment i ever read.
does anyone else have a feeling like ed is singing from his pure shiny soul?
+Barbara Kmet what soul
+Trevor Porter LOL
+Trevor Porter All the ginger souls that he stole
+Jo Ginger doesn't have souls
Not anymore because Ed stole them
Now THATS a man that feels music in his soul
+IcyPrincess215 how can you sing this song without giving up a bit of your soul
But... He's a ginger
He has butchered an Irish song, a song you never heard before possibly
IcyPrincess215 really True 😍😍😍
Gingers have no soul
the point is that thru Ed Sheeran the younger people are becoming familiar with the traditional Irish Music. . . thanks for doing this Ed.

@@allanmacdonald8920 This is 100% Irish though, not a single bit French.
Pretty sure that it's Scottish. Good song either way
mcsuibhne005 he plays tradition irish music because his nanny is irish and he used to busk in Ireland
This man has literally saved me from the endless nights of crying. Just listening to this makes me relax and get lost in his voice. There needs to be more artists like him. Thank you Ed, for staying true to you.
Hope you're feeling better now :)
Hope your soul has found peace now. Be strong, love❤
God bless you find your beautiful yet wonderful soul and live on with your dreams
May you have many more nights of found peace...

All my relatives know that I wish this version to be played at my funeral. This is my favorite.

2020: #StayAtHome
How can u be here these times lol

I thought the exact same thing
I think that his voice cracking makes it sound better actually it makes it sound more realistic and seriously tons of people can't do what he does so I think he's awsome
that song is sooo old..... and ed probably is one of the best at singing it in my opinion.... "goodnight and joy be with you all!"
Why didn't I find this post earlier? This is perfect. My dad (born in 1916) would have loved this. Me (born 1950) and my daughter (born 1992) have found some common ground.
+Pat Webb 1916 year of the Irish🙂
long live those who fell in the foggy dew 1916 never forget Erin go bragh
It's 2017 and I'm still coming back to this cover song. Simple. Magnificent. Ed Sheeran.
Javv Anderson 2018 too? Andlways come back to this :)
so thought-provoking
Leave it up to Ed to give me instant chills
Honestly everyone is freaking out about when his voice cracked but I think it's the most beautiful part of this performance
I can not fucking believe there are people criticizing this...this is literally flawless and I have never heard a voice as good as his
Styles RockMe ...i agree 100.... on my third time listening to it in a row!!!
Clifford Affliction /watch?v=N8xeZ0RqmP8
?,.n
Corey Taylor is just as good
+Clifford Affliction I can name a few people who I believe have a better voice then Ed has, I do admit though he did sing it amazingly.
I am going to play this song every night before I go to sleep, and pretend like Ed Sheeran is singing it to me. #foreveralone
Becca Flynn never alone
My Papa sung this to me as baby. So beautiful.

SO what if it was a crack! Peeps should go sing their own crack and see if we'd all love it like we do this one here...
this is a common thing in irish singing its most likely a turn that i hear often in irish music
The first time I ever heard this song was when my family sat around and sang it at my Uncle's funeral. I was nine, but I'll never forget it. What a beautifully haunting song. Ed's voice just makes it that much sweeter.
This man can sing so effortlessly. Cheers.
2012 you wouldn't think he could get any better than this, but its 2017 & he did get better. He went from great to amazing.
GOOD!

Omg that end literally kills me. Im crying right now.
I agree. I saw him live once. Trust me. If he's ever performing in your country, be sure to see him. It's absolutely worth your money!
[Verse 1]
Of all the money that e'er I had
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
[Verse 2]
Of all the comrades that e'er I had
They are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Good night and joy be with you all
[Verse 3]
A man may drink and not be drunk
A man may fight and not be slain
A man may court a pretty girl
And perhaps be welcomed back again
But since it has so ought to be
By a time to rise and a time to fall
Come fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Good night and joy be with you all
He is such a gift to this world.
