This movie surprised me as a whole. I remember at like 2am one night, I was in the mood for cheesey horror and was like, this seems like it fits. Did not expect it to be so good or actually have the creepiness to it that it does.
@@kenderick100 That and the outside doors now being on the inside and I believe led to a wall. This movie surprised me when I went in expecting a super cheesy horror.
A couple fun facts for you lovely horror kings: -This hospital is a real place that exists in BC, Canada, called Riverview Hospital. They actually had to shut it off to the public because of this movie and people trespassing at night. -This building was used in Deadpool 2 (just the lawn for the end of the movie), and The Butterfly Effect as well as this movie. As usual I love your reactions! I hope you both are doing well and having an amazing pride month.
@@allymoeller5328that's actually really awesome, but it's been ages since I've watched smallville..I got the dvds though. Also, the tunnels they used look like the ones in Waverly hills
Also FUN fact, underground service tunnels were used to carry dead patients so the ones above didn't get scared or whatever, so most of those were used to carry dead people to wherever they needed to go
I have a movie recommendation for you to react to: •REC (2007), Spanish horror film in the Found Footage style, which has a very straightforward and simple premise, but is tense and scary from start to finish! Worth a check.
I was wanting to watch this but they only have the horrible dub version that doesn’t even sink up properly with the mouth. I wanna watch it in its original language I don’t mind reading, but I can’t find that version anywhere.
Grave Encounters is a very clear mocking of an actual ghost hunting show called Ghost Adventures. Lance Preston is a one for one spoof of Zak Bagans. Matt and TC are clearly meant to be Aaron and Jay. Knowing that specific show before watching the movie really enhanced my viewing experience.
I have only seen maybe an episode, but at the time, I only knew of the commercials for the show when I watched this. 100% I thought it was a spoof of GA, The lead looked/acted too much like him for it not to be.
When the upstairs camera is showing the open window, pitch black outside, even though it should be way after sunrise, in silence....that's when we knew they were all royally screwed. Such a brilliant example of "show, don't tell" mise en scene
I showed this to my friend and as he was leaving my apartment (the door leads straight outside) and he said “If I open this door and there’s a hallway, I’m going to lose my mind.” 😂
My fiancée and I stayed in a converted asylum a couple weeks ago, it’s a suuuuper nice hotel now. I cannot stress enough that I immediately said, “I think this place was an asylum” as we walked toward the building 😂 and then the receptionist immediately confirmed lol unfortunately we were not haunted that night (but I did have trouble sleeping knowing that someone had probably eaten their own hair in the room we were in)
My college is a converted asylum and apparently was one that was the worst place to get sent/everyone heard awful stories about it before it got shut down. I know we have some buildings on campus that are completely shut down and boarded up that didn't get renovated. Not sure why and we just get the usual "haunted" explanation. I'm like, that's probably the building where the torture took place. My dad dropped me off at school once (his first time doing so) and was like, "why do I know this place?" Then he remembered later on and was telling me about the stuff that went on when he was a kid and how people had to hope they weren't sent to that particular place. Safe to say my school does not mention it used to be an asylum.
Ran across this gem one night when binge watching horror movies...it is one of my fav of this type. Saw you also watched part 2, glad you enjoyed them!
Cody Cody Cody, I hear what you’re saying about Found Footage, I used to think the same thing, why are they still filming. And guess what happened? The times caught up with subgenre. Virtually everyone films every single thing they do and see nowadays. From the mundane to the gruesome. People have literally stood around filming while people are being brutalized or worse, as well and attending concerts and holding their phones in front of their faces while the artists are right there on the stage in the same building. Your question is valid and understandable, but that was then, this is now, people film everything, many in hopes of that groundbreaking clip that’ll break the internet. It’s sad but true in this new reality. Found Footage was just ahead of the game and predicted how we live today.
So excited to watch this! I've seen this movie a while back when I was probably too young to get my hands on it.😅 Found footage movies just hit different. They feel so much more scary to me. Also, happy Pride everyone! I'm sending everyone lots of love and free hugs. I'm proud of you all and I hope you can celebrate safely and freely.❤️
I love this film so much. Not just a great pastiche of the ghost hunting shows of the early 2000s, but also just a tried and true scary film! I also really enjoy the overall metaphor of the film where the crew literally gets put into the same position as mentally ill folks who would have been residents there--they go in, but they do not come back out.
The intro sequence for the TV show really looks like the intro for Zak Bagan's Ghost Adventures from back in the day. The final title card showing Grave Encounters, the overlays, the Dutch tilt shot with them walking past the camera from a lower angle, it's all there. Also, REC, a film I can highly recommend. Grave Encounters 2 is also very interesting!
To me the scariest parts are when the doors they from where they came in open in another hallway and then they realize it's still night outside. That was fucking terrifying the first time!
My found footage recommendation is "The Den" 2013. Not a lot of people know about it and I think it would be great to react to. As far the grave encounters sequel. I don't think it's as good as the first one BUT I must say that the idea they had for the sequel is too perfect. My problem with the movie boils down to execution. Still worth the watch tho.
I've been waiting for your reaction to this movie for so long ..AND I LOVED IT 😂 I'm glad to see you had fun with this one, it's the best way to watch this movie 😂 This movie is not top notch but it is entertaining. Alright alright alright alright alright 💃 🤣🤣🤣 You two are ridiculous 😂
Since you worked at a abandon hotel you really should see The Innkeepers (2011) if you havnt! About a hotel closing down & the last two attending the hotel decides to do a ghosthunt before their last shift ends.
I watched this movie with my classmates back in middle school and thought this was the scariest horror movie better than Paranormal Activity. Boy oh boy I was wrong. Asian found footages are much better when it comes to horror. Looking at this now everything looks so goofy! Lol. But I love Sergio's reactions about the hot guys in the movie haha
This is one of my favorite surprises. I bought it on dvd years ago just to add to my collection of horror films for like 2 dollars. Loved every second of it!
The budget for this film was only $120,000 (post production). This, to me, proves that you can make a film BETTER than Paranormal Activity for way less. Their budget was $215,000 (post production).
🌈 ❤ Pride blessings, hope you & yours can enjoy in safety I’m so happy you are doing the found footage films, love this genre as it’s the type of horror most likely to freak me out for real 😂
Good one, I recommend absentia, the innocents, unfriended, the den, final prayer, the shrine, husk, the caller, phantasm, hell house LLC, sole survivor, the brood, inside, from within, the banshee chapter, the tunnel...
Given what the concept of the 3rd movie was supposed to be, I strongly believe that Lance is the guy who stayed in the room with all of the writings on the walls
We were always been doubtful of US found footage horror since The Blairwitch Project, REC 1&2, The Tunnel, Gonjiam Hunted Asylum--maybe the bars were raised high by these movies, but Grave Encounters was so effective, and yeah, disorienting.. it's one of our favs now 🙃
I have a theory that the same magic used in the Blair witch to keep everyone in the forest and circles happens to be the same magic used to keep everyone inside the building. There is a belief that spirits who die cannot leave certain places, but the fact they took that concept and turned it on the living is absolutely terrifying.
The other really good movie of this style is more recent and it’s called Gonjiam Haunted Asylum, can’t remember if you guys have already reacted to it but I liked it just as much as this!

This is what I always hope would happen in those ghost hunter shows. 😂 I don’t want a ball rolling across the floor. I want a demon to pounce on Zak Baggans’ face!
You know what REALLY freaked me the hell out about this movie when I first saw it? It's the fact that while we do see some deaths, half of the crew in this film weren't visable killed on camera, they just were pulled away and went missing; which is incredible horrifying and despairing to me! They might not have been killed they might have just been brought to a different part of the hospital, completely at the mercy of the spirits that were holding him there! This movie is a damn nightmare, man; there IS no escaping this place, you're just fucked! You are at the mercy of these evil tortorious ghosts and there's nothing you can do!
the CGI at times sucks in this, but I love the atmosphere and everything else, probably my favorite part is when tey break the front doors down to find more hallway, soemthing that you don't see often enough that playing with dimensions.
The whole exit door opening into a corridor reveal, followed by the asylum becoming seemingly endless and inescapable, always gave me huge Corpse Party vibes...
there was an old episode of ghost adventures that i saw before i got real tired of their crap lol but they were in an abandoned hospital and the hospital had an underground tunnel system where they would take the bodies to get disposed of, it was nuts
Omg that building is from my hometown lol. It's an abandoned mental hospital where a lot of stuff is filmed. Supernatural, x-files, Jennifer's body, Halloween resurrection etc. Also some parts are true, like the tunnel is an actual thing in the real building, my mom used to work there and said the tunnels were used to transport mostly food across buildings because the area has a lot of hills
I looked up the building and this is what Google said when I looked up The Riverveiw hospital: Jennifer's Body (2009) Shutter Island (2010) The X-Files (1993) The Last Mimzy (2007) Smallville (2001) The Butterfly Effect (2004) Final Destination 2 (2003) Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
You said exactly how I feel, the whole everyone dies, especially the last survivor dies in a twist at the end, is SO OVER DONE now in horror it just is expected now. I don't get why we can't have a scary scary movie with a happy(ish) ending...thankfully a few stand out but ya....it's just over done these days and we need more inventive endings
lately my favorite kind of horror story is the kind where the person fake something or makes fun of it and then does something anyway, and then halfway through they realize that they brought some real shit on themselves
i've only seen this movie once so watchin it again with ya'll commentary made it an enjoyable watch because i think the first time i saw this movie all that popped in my head was it being a parody of the show ghost adventures & its host zak bagans 😂🤣😂

OH! There’s also a tunnel like the end and we got a lot of weird noises there and then saw wet human foot prints (not shoes, barefoot) in the dust on the ground

them opening the lobby doors and it being another hallway was honestly the biggest shock of the movie
Yea that's definitely gotta be the most creepiest thing to see cause I know if I saw that it would creep me out
