From his formative years as a West Coast B-Boy, to his current status as international DJ/Producer, Vancouver native DJ Ali is without a doubt one of the most gifted artists to grace the decks or console in the history of underground music.
Behind the decks, Ali’s Chicago-influenced mixes of hard beats and dirty baselines have earned him a loyal flowing and solid reputation up and down the West Coast house music scene. He currently holds prestigious residencies at three of Vancouver’s hottest clubs: Sonar, the Caprice and Element, while a hectic tour schedule finds him racking up the frequent flyer miles with stints in Hawaii, Los Angeles, Ireland, Toronto, Seattle and San Francisco.
Ali’s first foray into music culture was as a young B-Boy breaker. After picking up his first vinyl record at the age of eight years old, young Ali Meghji was hooked! His evolution as a DJ began in 1993, just as the Vancouver scene was beginning to take shape. They grew together, side by side, with Ali developing his signature, danceable style - and a very loyal following of the fans - through numerous residences and local clubs and after hours, including Blueprint and Largo, as well as the legendary underground Rehab parties of the mid 1990s. In fact, Ali references the Rehab events, as well as the Summer Love party of 1996 as memorable and defining gigs. He considers himself lucky to have had these early opportunities to play records along some of his early influences such as Chez Damier, Derrick Carter, DJ Heather and Mark Farina - to name a few.
Ali began producing his own brand of body-shaking tracks in 1998 and today he’s as renowned for his studio work as he is for his DJ skills, recognized for both his remixes and original products. His records are favorites of such luminaries as Derek Carter, Johnny Fiasco and Chez Damier, and with this exposure, over the past few years the demand for his productions has been wildly growing. Recent hits include “U Don’t Know” (Village) and “The Release” (Manali Records) both of which feature super vocalist Tim Fuller. Stay tuned for slew of bangers on the way, including the highly anticipated “Show me” also with Fuller, forthcoming on one of today’s freshest “dance music” labels around, Manali Records.
Ali’s list of influences is as varied - and as extensive - as his record collection. Inspirations include Derrick Carter, Chez Damier, Mark Farina, Vernell deLong, Johnny Fiasco, Tomas Osaze and Sean Dimitrie, Prince Michael Jackson, Earth Wind & Fire, Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Mo Dee, EPMD, Black Moon, Erik B & Rakim and L.O.N.S. But when the lights come up it is Ali’s faith and his dedicated parents that audiences should thank as the primary reasons for his making music today. As the ever growing following and admiration for DJ Ali’s work attests, we have lots to be thankful for indeed.
