This us just a fun test Jake, but maybe the guests should have written their choices down to avoid group think. Great video. Please repeat Yoder vs KK!
Good point. Most we busy chatting and having some beers when it wasn’t their turn, but some could have listened and impacted them. It was a tough choice, I couldn’t really tell the difference in my quick taste. 🍻
Great video. I have a traditional stick burner and pellet grill. Completely different smoke flavours. Would like to see the comparison without a smoke tube.
I also have both an offset and a pellet smoker. And yes i use pellet tubes on my pellet smoker. The smoke tubes are a game changer for pellet smokers and it doesnt matter which pellet smoker you have. I love using my pellet smoker because it is extremely convenient. Set it and forget it. However i do enjoy my offset smoker. Its the purist in me. I am a bbq snob and i will not apologize for it. . I enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome. I have been doing all my briskets on my traegar. The reason is its easier for me and not everyone enjoys the heavy smoke as i live in South Dakota. Bear mountain pellets are amazing. Smoking pecan pellets are a game changer but too spendy for my budget unless it is for something special. On my reverse flow i use red oak and supplement with a chunk of hickory every hour. I like the flavor but again most are not used to the heavy flavor around here. 200 to smoke and 275 with it hits the stall. Wrap and warm rest for at least 4 hours
Offset was pulled at 195. I let the other one come down in temp before putting it in the oven for a little bit. Won’t really affect flavor that much. 🍻
I feel 195 gives more tender flat and prime rib texture and taste overall 203 gives that melt mouth feel from point but more dryer in flat sometimes So out of these 2 temps, I feel there is a difference…the beefiness, mouthfeel, melt, tenderness, too mushy or getting bland. I can be wrong and I’m still learning and dialing down my briskets I have 1050 Masterbuilt and 250 gallon offset and get good results from both. I like using my offset because I can fit more briskets …the day they make 1000 gallon pellet smoker would be something wouldn’t it 😅 or you can get a rotisserie style smoker which you can kinda set it and forget it but also still takes wood splits 🤔forgot to mention there very expensive lol anyways….. In the end of the day, as long as it tastes good! Thanks for sharing 🫡
Nice video, although surprising to me. Owned a Yoder for a couple years, currently own a 1975, and there is no comparison imo. The offset produces a far better product for me
When I got my 1975 there was a night and day difference in the brisket on my Yoder. I kept tweaking things on my Yoder brisket and it’s come a very long way. I was shocked at how close I was able to get them. 🍻
South Texas here, I love to start a fire. I love to barbecue I own all kinds of smokers, offset, direct heat, you name it, I bought a searwood xl 600 about three months ago and I’ve already burned 300 pounds worth of pellets. I absolutely love this thing you’re able to achieve good smoke rings, good bark etc, etc. I haven’t used any of my other cookers since I bought this thing😂
Haha I definitely still love using my offset, but I use my pellet grill more. It’s more flexible for week day cooking or if I have errands to run but want bbq. 🍻
i been bbqing briskets on an offset. and wood fires for over 40 years. now i do alot on a pellet grill. no way a pellet grill comes close to the good wood smoke flavor. ,,, Great video
I wouldn’t have believed it either, but Yoders are different than many of the other pellet grills and I’ve spent 4 years working on my Yoder brisket. I tried it first and was shocked at how close it was. Wouldn’t have believed it, but the results don’t lie. 🍻
This is exactly what I was thinking. I have used both pellets and offsets. Never got good smoke flavor on a pellet grill. I also haven’t used smoke tubes either.
@@RumandCookI’d be interested to know the cook process on the offset. I’m sure you’re dialed in on the Yoder, but maybe we can get the offset a little more dialed for 2025
Loved your offset vs. pellet grill comparison. It has given me promise for my Weber Searwood XL since I ditched my Green Egg. If I could make a quick suggestion from a marketing executive of a Fortune 500 company. When doing a blind comparison, have the participants "write down" their selection. Don't show anybody. Verbal choices heard by a group, always, always, always influences their decision to some degree. Psychology nobody wants to be the outsider. Also, use a sticky note showing which is A and B. Thanks for doing the work to show us a comparison.
Thanks. Yeah I can see that, most people were in a group off the patio drinking beers and chatting so while I’m sure some of that happened, not as much as people might think. Good note for next time though. 🍻
Next time, if you do another offset vs pellet grill, you should take one large brisket and cut it in half length wise so you are comparing the same cut of meat rather than 2 different cows that could affect the results.
Is this a fair test between a pellet grill and an offset if you are using a smoke tube? The fair test would be a pellet grill without the assist of a smoke tube vs an offset smoker. Would the pellet grill win without the smoke tube?
I don’t see why it’s not fair. My goal was to put my best pellet grill brisket against my best offset brisket. I closed down the damper on my offset to help hold more smoke as well. 🍻
🤣 nah there are many things an offset still is better at. One of those being turkey breasts. Haven’t been able to get the same results on KK or pellet. I’ll be doing another head to head on brisket with the KK though. 🍻
Thanks Jake. I enjoyed the video and all of you buddies. Where were the female tasters? I would have been interesting to see if they had a different opinion. Also, you said you used oak pellets. Did you use oak for the offset? Thanks again for this video. All the best to you and your family for 2025!!
Absolutely the best video you have ever done. This is real world stuff. That’s why I own a Yoder and that’s why I follow this channel. Good stuff Jake!!!
Thanks much! It’s taken awhile to get my brisket game where I wanted it, but well worth the effort. I’ll be doing another head full brisket master class video soon as well. 🍻
So I applaud you and your testing idea however to rule out the human herd mentality one thing would be, have each person fill out a paper stating which one they liked and only reveal the answer at the end. In other words a silent vote.

Thanks! Without a tube the offset would win easily. 🍻

A pellet grill is certainly less work, that’s for sure. I haven’t priced out the pecan pellets, but that’s good to know. Thanks. 🍻
Which one was pulled at 195 and which one was pulled at 203? I know with mine, the long hold works better with brisket pulled at 195.
Offset was pulled at 195. I let the other one come down in temp before putting it in the oven for a little bit. Won’t really affect flavor that much. 🍻
Great video and great results!

Yeah generally if I’m doing an overnight hold I’ll pull at 195. 250 gallon is pretty big for home. Can cook a lot on that 😊🍻

With your smoke tubes, did you burn both simultaneously, or did you put the second in after the first went out?
Great video! Love your content!
One after each other. Burning one end and letting the whole thing burn. About 4.5 hours per tube. 🍻

I got a little confused when you talked about presentation side. Did you cook both fat cap up?
Yes sorry, both were cooked fat side up. I don’t like fat cap down brisket. Thanks! 🍻
Great video Jake. I really like your videos using the Yoder.
Thanks much. Glad you enjoy!🍻
Next time, if you do another offset vs pellet grill, you should take one large brisket and cut it in half length wise so you are comparing the same cut of meat rather than 2 different cows that could affect the results.
It’s worth a try, but I don’t think it would affect it that much. They were both high end Prime briskets. 🍻
When you said you pulled them at 195* did you probe that in the point or in the flat? Or were both roughly the same temp?
Both were roughly the same temp. I rotated them to try and get it as close as possible. 🍻
Did I miss the part where which one was A & B ?
A was offset, b was Yoder. 🍻

Which one did you prefer?
Honestly it was pretty hard to tell them apart. I think the offset had the edge but it was splitting hairs for me. 🍻
GREAT video to start off 2025! The only thing is that I must have missed the text asking me to be a judge!! LOL Love the YODER!
Thanks! Haha! I let me my neighbor and brother choose all the taste testers. He was like umm is 12 too many? Hell no we will have 2 briskets. 🍻
I suppose 1975 is going on a garage sale, will Komodo Kamado be next?
🤣 nah there are many things an offset still is better at. One of those being turkey breasts. Haven’t been able to get the same results on KK or pellet. I’ll be doing another head to head on brisket with the KK though. 🍻
Ill buy your 1975 asap lol @RumandCook
@@RumandCookincluding brisket lol
lol sorry it’s not going anywhere 😊🍻
🤣 they were darn close. I would have given the offset the edge, but I didn’t want to share my thoughts and wanted to keep it blind. 🍻
Fat cap up or down on the Yoder?
Both were fat cap up. I don’t like fat cap down personally. 🍻
Thanks Jake. I enjoyed the video and all of you buddies. Where were the female tasters? I would have been interesting to see if they had a different opinion. Also, you said you used oak pellets. Did you use oak for the offset? Thanks again for this video. All the best to you and your family for 2025!!
Haha I’ll get some female testers in the next one. White oak wood splits in the offset. Thanks and all the best to you and yours in 2025 as well! 🍻
Great video Jake
Thanks! 🍻

Copium 😂
lol made me look that one up 😊🍻
Yoder for life!
Certainly surprised me. In truth they were extremely close and I couldn’t really tell the difference. 🍻
