“ I wish my homeboys much success. But at the same time I still get depressed. Walkin’ through the wind with a cupful of gin, thinkin’ ‘bout things I coulda woulda shoulda been. I wipe my tears , sip my beers, Wish good luck to my peers.” That’s a powerful damn lyric, it really resonates with me personally, and a powerful damn song as a whole. One of my favs from Fro since back in the day when I discovered his music through a burned CD my buddy gave me after he downloaded the record off of Napster. Good times indeed.
Thank you. Man, I miss those days when we distributed music through our friends, i think a lot of the love i have with the music is with that, like, it was a secret until you shared it, or found it, it wasnt on the radio, (afroman was), but its never a secret anymore, just polluted with somewhat similar genres, which can be great sometimes, finding new shit is always great, but polluted.
Definitely my favorite Afro man track. I remember being 13-14 years old listening to his music. I’m 31 now and there’s few songs that hit me like this one.
Afroman is one of the most slept on rappers. He has a comic approach to a lot of songs that's not always thugged out so he doesn't get taken as seriously. None the less he channels not only the sound of the inner city ghetto but the sounds of underserviced rural areas. The sound blends country, g funk and a southern folk sound. Sitting somewhere between 3 6 mafia and phish. The layered vocals he uses is pretty unique in the space and he has an awesome voice on top of it. Every track is musically sound and cohesive with the lyrics and motifs of his projects. Not to mention the fun the call and response parts bring to live shows. There's alot more to afroman than a colt 45 and 2 zig zags
This song is so dope. All the other songs he does where he sounds like he has a posse behind him, it's all Afro. I only love this song from him. Very talented individual though.
Crazy growing up next to this dude. Just being in the environment was unforgettable. Ghetto as hell but you all feel together when stuff comes on like this. Still live in the area, just on the west side suburbs, and best believe everyone still knows all your songs word for word! The only inspiration to come out of Palmdale unless it involves sports!
When I first heard this song at like 16 or something (34 now) I never realized how much pain was in it. It was almost more of a fun song to me at the time. Got some tears listening to this now man.
I've been listening to this track since I was 13 years old and it still stands the test of time as one of the best underrated tracks of the early 2000's. Afroman is a legit talented emcee who definitely get's overlooked when people make best of lists. I'll be a fan till the day I die and when that time comes hopefully I'm still bumping this.
hell yeah bro.. same here.. i was like 12 or 13 too when i got this cd. my mom wouldn't let me buy it, so i had to ask my uncle to buy it for me.. he looked at it and thought it was weird but didn't give a fuck. so i gave him the money and played it in his car during some long road trip or some shit.. we listened to the entire cd and he actually liked it too hahah... anyways, i grew up listening to afroman, real shit. Dude is hella underrated, great flow, amazing singer, great song writer, and can play the guitar. I always loved his shit and have like his whole collection probably. Glad to see that some other people here also started listening to his shit early on and still do!! AFRO-EVER haha..
Palmdale class of 86, played football, failed algebra, drank colt 45! wish I'd smoked weed back then! might have saved some of my Palmdale heartache. met Afro once and he gave up three full page autographs for my niece and nephew and mom. PALM...DALE! PAALMDAAALE... come back to me. haven't been home in 20 years and missing it. all my great friends still around there. yo let me get a PALMDALE!
Yup, it's Afroman's life story and African American life stories are often somber, but out of pain comes beauty, which I think is why African American music is some of the best in the world.
Don't disregard the white experience either.... We love Nickelback's "Photograph". It's think of beauty but it comes out in pain, and is some of the best music in the world.
Nah just yall won't take the time to look for them real niggas and if they about to blow and in they hometown they get gunned out by hating as niggas kus of dumb beef
Really amazing and underrated song. If anyone ever tells you Afroman is just some comedy act and is not a serious rapper/musician, show them this song. I guarantee they will take it back.
"walking through the wind with a cup full of gin, thinking about things i could've would've should've been. i wipe my tears sip my beers and wish good luck 2 my peers" 💯

My friend passed away recently. I don't know if I ever got him to like the song, but I listen to it as a remembrance. I miss you Ira
I worked in a concert venue for almost 20 years. We finally were able to get Afroman to do a show. I met Joe and was able to hang with him for a few hours before the show. Then again after the show. The man is a spectacularly intelligent man ! The party was so much fun..... chillin with good people and partaking in some of the best in the world !
Who else loved this album when they heard the whole thing, about a year after it came out? "Because I got high" was the only song I skipped on the album in the car.. it was funny, but every other song was fire 🔥
Fell in love with this song after the first play back in '07. It still feels good to listening to even four or five times in a row. Fun lively flow, simple energetic beat. You can hear the feeling in his voice. Stellar track.
It’s crazy this dudes not known for anything more than because I got high. Dude is better than any Cali rapper out there. My favorite rapper of all time.
The first time I heard this song n others in early 2000, I couldnt help but listen to them repeatedly n still do. I love the way he sounds n sings. My girls were little back then n we'd all sing-a-long n they'd tell me some of their crazy stories. Of course I had my own personal stories with my youngest bro, but only shared so much😁😆 My 4 late bros n I grew up without our parents, lost our mom at 4-8 yrs old. We lived with our grandpa, uncles n dad so we sorta got away with doin certain things. I was around 12 the first time we smoked, my younger bro n I did just about everything together, me being the only girl, he taught me how to drive, ride a bike, horse n dirt bike, shoot squirrels for our grandpa with a slingshot n .22 (we lived out in the country). Also how to smoke (not cigs) hehe, we had fun playing jokes on each other a lot. By the time we were 9-13 yrs old, we didn't have any type of mother figure in our lives n by then I was cooking, cleaning, washing clothes for them, even babysitting my younger cousins n had never minded. I had then lost my 4 bros in 1980-88 at 21-25 yrs old, which were the greatest heartbreaks n hardest times of my life. We had all been very close, they were my bros, friends, protectors, etc. I dnt think or feel that a person ever gets over losing such close family. I still hv breakdowns every yr around their birthdays, dates of their passing n when I just plain miss them so much, they were such a great part of me, my life. me, that pain feels like I had just lost them all over again. But I believe n know that in time we'll allvbe together again, love u my sweet precious bros❣😇
Great story. You have lived through so much and endured. Don’t ever give up, your brothers and parents are watching over you…You have gained so many angels

People getting hung in Palmdale SMH!

Best line in the song
It’s “get down punk”
💯
Get down punk
It's a shame this song got over-shadowed by Because I got High. They give off completely different vibes though, this song is so somber.
Yup, it's Afroman's life story and African American life stories are often somber, but out of pain comes beauty, which I think is why African American music is some of the best in the world.
ggplata absolutely. I never knew he was soo talented because of the I got high shit. Always thought he was just a comedian.
Damm colt 45 or Smash that 83 🔨💨🔨he knows how to work that shit it tells a story in 5 minutes 🤟🍺🤟🎩🎩🌿🌱🌿🌱🎧🎧
Don't disregard the white experience either.... We love Nickelback's "Photograph". It's think of beauty but it comes out in pain, and is some of the best music in the world.

Sally Lauper freaking right
Edward Rice good. Smooth. Smart. Flows. He's an awesome artist.
+drnockaable your alright
I had the pleasure meeting him hosting an event in Corvallis Oregon He is a amazingly talented and nailed it on stage. Class act.
Afroman sure can rap, unlike today's crap. Making up words just for songs, and the don't make any sense. At least the stuff like this, told a story.
There very few good rappers nowdays
+GetPoopStuffed right Shakespeare invented a ton of words and did it well
GetPoopStuffed i think he ment that the words they just though in make no sense

I am happy to have a chance to watch Afroman live at a 4/20 Eve Concert!
How do you dislike this? You don't like a good story? Afroman is one of the most underrated rappers ever.
