Can we talk about the fact that dodie arranged this almost entirely herself with no experience??? She's NUTS

I never realized that Dodie has that feeling of a mother singing to her child. I always find myself looking to her music for comfort especially when I can’t sleep. I just can’t get over her entire self.

  • @augustburning

The best way I've been able to sum up Dodie's music is that it's SO brilliantly complex in its composition, yet so simple in it's presentation that you can't help but be affected, very deeply and very emotionally, by it, whatever the intended affect may be. 🥺🥰😄😭
Very astute commentary. You've put to words all the things that I notice in her music but haven't the words to describe. Thank you and keep this up. 🙏
Also, yes, she does her own string arrangements. She discussed it a bit in her interview with NME (I think it was?).

I'm a music education major, and I just wanted to congratulate your attention to your use of big terms; you didn't shy away from technical musical terms, but made sure to always realize you used them, and then define them in a way that is accessible to anyone, musician or not. Thanks for doing your part in making music ed accessible to everyone!

so dodie actually made this song 4(?) years ago on a smaller scale along with another EP of hers and I loved it back then, but the newer version (this one) is imo slower and more intimate with all the orchestrated elements

from an opera singer lol (also a huge dodie fan), we usually shorten "recitative" and say "REH-sit" if you dont wanna say the longer version and risk mispronouncing hehe. Also, thank you for analyzing this song. Dodie has been my comfort artist for a while now, and hearing you talk about it reminds me of my music theory days earlier in my undergrad. Thanks a bunch!!

This is one of my favorites of her. The strings are absolutely magical. I would never think about how it have a LOTR like sounds in it, but now I can't stop. It's show how amazing dodie writes. She's telling us about something so deeply painful for her; her words are quiet, but what she's saying is so much bigger and whole arrangement emphasize it so well.

Loved this interpretation of When - dodie’s orchestration can seem simple sometimes when that minimalism is part of the genius of it! I will say, while I did hear the lydian raised 4ths later on in the chords/arpeggios you get into around 7:07 and onward, I never heard the opening notes as Lydian... what you are calling the raised 4th and the 3rd, I hear as the 7th and 6th to a different (regular major) key, Ab. It creates a pull up toward the tonic or down to the 5th looking for resolution. And the Snow Patrol esque notes Ab and Eb become the tonic and fifth. Funny how our brains put the tonic in different spots!

One of my favorite TH-camrs is Emma Blackery. I find her song A History of Touches mesmerizing, but I don't know why. I don't even know if the music to the song is all that complex or not, but I'd love a reaction video to it if you're open to reviewing it (or any of her songs, really, but you'll find they're all very different from each other ... she likes experimenting with her sound and style, so her songs have changed greatly over the years). Thanks! :)

A CRAZY beautiful piano / experimental song that I think you would love is “Wind Tempos” by Porter Robinson.
