*The Stihl 090 was introduced in 1959 as part of the Stihl Lightning Chainsaw line. I have a 1968 Stihl 08 S that is from that same line and I love this saw. I paid $210 for this saw in junk condition on ebay. After buying all of the parts to get the saw running and all of the cosmetic parts I have $570 in this saw now and I feel that every penny was well spent because this saw looks amazing and runs like a dream. It's a top handle saw around 6 horse power and has enough grunt to pull a 28" bar. You just don't get the same feeling as you do when you're holding one of these vintage stihl saws as you do with a new one.*
Boy, talk about a walk down memory lane! When I was young on the farm in New-Brunswick we had a few 090s that my dad got from when they built James Bay hydro plants. Great saws; heavy as hell, but when used only for felling, it's O.K. Loved the 025 and 017 for cutting the branches. Keep making these great videos and kudos for having it made on to Wood Talk. Mike
I think this saw is a pre 1978 model as evidenced by the lack of a chain break. I just got one too. Found my dad's old stihl 048 which is a 1982 model with a 36" bar. I'll have to get one of those Panther mills since I have a couple of red oak logs to deal with. If you ever have trouble starting one give just one squirt of model airplane fuel in the carb. One pull starts! Looks like you got a pretty good deal and it seems to run good. Certainly enough power for your mill.
I've used a stihl ms880 on and off for the last few years and even though it's lighter than the 90 by a few pounds its a beast and an arm breaker to work with. My grand father told me about a 90 he had years ago and this is my first time seeing one. Great vid and I'm going to have to show this to him. He'll get a kick out of it!
Love your new saw Matt, it will run your mill just fine. I ran my Alaskan mill with a 75 Stihl for several years. A friend gave me a 090 and I put a both saws on a 52" bar lots of power still lots of hard work. Lots of loggers out here in Washington saws are common. Have fun with your mill and keep the chips flying.
Yours is older than mine! , good tools last, granted my heavy use was in the first 5 years selling cordwood and trying to build furniture .......... tapering off as I got a "real job" (biggest mistake of my life)
+Matthew Cremona They used to use McCulloch's chainsaw engines and McCulloch actually made the winningest go-kart engines ever made from the late 1950's to the early 1980's. You now officially own THE chainsaw that put Stihl on the map! Up until the 1980's when McCulloch (the man and/or his family) sold the McCulloch chainsaw company to Black & Decker, McCulloch was the #1 chainsaw company in the world. Even the Black & Decker made McCulloch chainsaws were great though, but technology was changing to add anti-vibe mounts, which McCulloch had on their Super Pro series chainsaws, but not on all. Then the McCulloch brand got sold by Black & Decker to the Taiwanese company Cheng Fen and all the good McCulloch's were gone and replaced with what I personally call the "big box store junk" chainsaws. McCulloch got sold (partially) by Cheng Fen to Electrolux in the early 2000's for the European markets' rights like Poulan is here in the USA (think vacuum cleaners! Yes, that Electrolux!). Electrolux bought out the "big 3" Swedish chainsaw companies of Husqvarna, Jonsereds, and Partner-all in that order too. Later on in the 1980's they bought Poulan and then the last chainsaw company was McCulloch (again around 2003).
Great video! I can't wait to see that milling some logs! It's a beast! I bet once you get a longer bar and chain and your mill installed it will weigh more than you!!
you are awesome, very explanatory. This is the first time I've ever clicked on you. I had an 045 superAV with a 26 inch bar. That thing you have is a monster. I'm very glad I found your Channel I gave you a thumbs up and subscribe instantly
It is. It takes quite the pull to turn over. That's one of the reasons I'm so happy it starts with only a couple pulls. I would change the angle on the chain that came with it but it's been sharpened many times and after I regrind the teeth there really wouldn't be much left. I'd be lucky to get 3 or 4 sharpenings out of it.
Nice buy! I ended up getting all my chains by the link from baileys. I've considered getting an extra foot or two of links for each chain I have to replace individual teeth when broken. I don't have the tools needed to remove/attach new links but there's a lawn/garden repair shop a half mile away that does. That tensioning screw looks like it's going to be a PITA when you have the mill attached!
my 070 does 10 minutes per cut on a slab 2,5m long and 50-60cm thick. i was pretty impressed. a decent sized log only takes 1 hour for full processing (5 slabs out of 1 log)
Good score on your 090. Great saws for milling. Any bar for the following will fit your saw: 051, 070, 075, 076, 084, 088 and S10 and 08 (I think on the S10). I mill with a 076 Super and am looking to add an 090 to the shed.
i'm planning to pick up a 100cc plus saw for my mill too. the 76 does a fine job but a bit more power will be nice too. plus a bigger bar. hope the saw runs well for you!!
I do n own a chain saw but glad I watched this video. Looks like a great purchase for you. AND, i must be out of the gas can loop. Ive never seen one like you have with the way that spout works. Got to get one of those.
Also, I'm not sure what the High / Low carby adjustment screws should be at. I have not touched them since I got the saw. Plus the brass joiner to underneath the On/Off switch has become un-soldered, so it is basically not making an electrical connnection to the switch, but I checked the spark plug and the plus is still sparking. It is a brand new spark plug. Do you know waht could be wrong? Maybe it has got reeds inside the cylinder to block off and open up ports? But to me it seems to be not sucking up the fuel, and i've stripped carby, nothing blocking it.
That's an awesome saw Matt. Good luck. But I hope your good with small engines because your going to have to rebuild it all the time. I have 3 of these saws, and especially when used for milling they will get run out. They adventure starts lol. Good luck
Thanks Anthony! I've rebuilt a few saws already so small engine repair doesn't bother me. Milling is a lot of work on a saw so I expect more maintenance.
@@mcremona you shouldnt have to rebuild it regually, i stayed for loggers for 3 years in indonesia, they use them to mill big timber freehand all day every day and are decades old..

That's quite a testament to the old saw.
Kinda like me, who cares what it looks like as long as it still works.
Looking forward to the milling videos.

Look how great it cuts, sets down for the epic walk away shot and the saw tumbles over. I Love it. Cool vid MC
lol! it's too round :)
Happy milling and a happy Matt! That more powerful engine looks like it cut through very nicely. Nice saw my friend! Congratulations!
Awesome new toy, Matt! That's going to save you lots of time milling up your slabs - and there's nothing more valuable than your time!
That's a monster, wouldn't want to carry that around the woods all day. Looking forward to seeing it mill.
You'd grow some big arms lol
Sweet !! I have a 028 I bought 26 years ago still starts on second pull only Plugs and pull cord chains and bars all it ever needed. Awesome machines
Wow that's quite the life out of one purchase! Nice!

Congrats on the new to you saw. Matt Cremona for president!
haha! Thanks Ivan!
Looking forward to get one of these next month, what a monster!
Running pretty good!
I watch your videos, and I can only imagine how much your neighbors love you..... hahahaha!
Love those beasts, I inherited a 07 and believe it's made in 1961......runs like a champ. Pull start is like turning over a big block Chevy
Dude when you did that side by side comparison my jaw dropped. That saw is so badass!
Lol! ms250 is a tinker toy for sure!
Look at that beast! I still run an old johnsered. Built like a tank. Thanks for sharing!
It's crazy how long these things can run for. Thanks!
This is a beast of a saw! I am sure you'll have a great time with it
It's huge! Sounds like it runs great too....like starting a go- cart.
lol! You could probably make a pretty sweet go-cart out of it

You're welcome and thank you!
Sorry for it being a little confusing.
So excited it started and worked great! You for sure could cut fast threw that log! Super stoked for ya man! Cant wait to see the saw mill!
Congrats on the "new" used chain saw. Can't wait to see some milling being done with it. Be safe!
Thanks Tom!

That deserves three man cards and a high five. That thing is a beast.
ha! Thanks Kevin!
That think looks like a beast! bet it will make milling a lot easier for ya
awesome find. good to see that it runs and idles as it should. I picked up a 660 and it flys through the wood.
I was surprised how quickly it started up. I figured I'd be in for a little more difficulty due to it's age and condition.
+Matthew Cremona my 660 has a decompression button, yours looks like a beast to start.
are you going to sharpen the chain you have at a 10° angle?
It is. It takes quite the pull to turn over. That's one of the reasons I'm so happy it starts with only a couple pulls. The woodslicer sword with short bar for now. Looks like a lot of fun. Be safe with that thing. Especially when the gas throttle is locked
Feels like a sword. Thanks Gerrit!
Congrats on the saw,
Watch out trees, Matt is on the loose with an awesome sawmill and he's coming for you!!!
haha! Now I just need more places to put these slabs

haha! I'm good in the exercise dept now
Have fun and be safe with that beast!
Thanks! Will do!

25 to 1 is the mix we all use in Australia on all the older saws
Great saw. Would look great saw in any collection.
oh my word! I am so druling! that is so sweet. very happy woodworking!
hahaha! :)
Great buy Matt. Look forward to seeing you put that monster to use.
Thanks Sam! I'm looking forward to putting it to use
What a beast! They sure don't make em like that anymore!
ha! no they do not :)

Thanks Matt! Good to hear!
congrats on the new saw! Looks great.
Thanks!

That's the only modern spill proof can that doesn't just suck. It's made by midwest can. I have a 5 and a 2 gallon one.
That is awesome I cant wait for an epic woods video with loads of milling using this saw!
They're coming :)
Good thing that saw is nice and loud. I'll bet you couldn't even hear your neighbors yelling at you for sawing while they were trying to sleep :)
haha! I hope they weren't trying to sleep at 6pm ;)

Nice. Looking forward to a milling video.
Matt that is sick!! looks like a small lawnmower engine :)
Keep up the great work!!
thank you Matt. looks like a monster to me

Wow what a BEAST! Great find. Can't wait to see more Chain Saw Milling! :-)
That is a beast of a saw!!
Heck yes! You'll have to come check it out sometime
The thing is a hungry beast!!!
That is a great step up for your milling.
Thanks Tommy! Should make things quicker
I would imagine :-)
That thing is a beast!
Awesome saw Matt. Cutting that log looked fun.
I might do it again in the morning :)
Good deal 👍👌 love it ❤️❤️ super nice 👍👍👍👍👍
Matt, That is a monster. Very cool. I was so glad when it started, idled and cut! My luck...the beast would have been DOA.
Jim
Thanks Jim! I was half expecting that
Very pleased it is working. Recommend a measuring cup for the oil vs. using side of the quart though:-0)
Great Saw Matt!! Lots of power!!
thanks! A fun one to run
I am looking at o66 stihl and a 394/5xp husq right now for a lumber mill. both are about 93 cc
Damn, that thing is a beast!
yes indeed :)

Sounds very healthy too good buy
That's neat!! I don't think you better get anything bigger.lol!!! Have fun with that saw!!! Regards Bob Lee
The clutch on that saw looks bigger than the clutch on my mini bike when I was a kid. I would say that you could run a little rich on the oil too.

Cool toy! It's almost as big as you are!
Haha! Most things are
WOW you got a hell of a good deal on the saw
Awesome. i have always wondered how to attach a blade on a chain saw. You make cutting the stump look so easy :-)
Thanks Craig! Glad you were able to pick up something (probably) useful :)
It's not a blade, I know I'm being technical, but it makes me cringe when I hear/read that! A blade is on a knife. A bar and chain is on a chainsaw.
I have a 070, gas mix for it is 25:1, would think for the 090 would be the same.
Exciting, really looking forward to seeing it in your sawmill.
Would be something for me when I saw where there is no power for my electric saw.
yeah! Might be a little faster than your 391 :)
+Matthew Cremona hehe Yes it's probably the same difference between my 391 and your new saw, that it is between your new saw and my electric saw. So it would probably make a big difference when you are too far from electricity.
Don't forget to check out the DOUBLE vintage 090's running on the mill of the One and Only "Buckin' Billy Ray Smith"!!!!

Agreed, this would be a great topic Matt, I really want to mill my own lumber someday and would really like to learn more about chainsaws as well.
+Randy Allaway I can certainly do something on the basics of chainsaws. I'll throw it onto my production schedule. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Well if you're not in a rush or are just doing small logs, your saw isn't the thing stopping you ;)
+Matthew Cremona true true I think I may order me a panther in the spring! to much snow in the woods right now!
Nice saw! You could use those cookies you cut to make some little patio side tables...
Thanks Martin! Good idea. I'll see how well they dry

what a beast of a saw, and no chain brake. be carefull. it would be hard to do woodworking with one arm or leg.
Thanks, Matt. Extra respect for this thing
Sweet saw!
They're a total pain to start , and they've got a bad pre-ignition recoil to damage your wrist too. The 088 is way less trouble .
you have some stuff to play at your backyard :)
This is the most frightening chainsaw ever came to existence
Congrats Matt! How much will this delay your purchase of a portable sawmill?
Great Video! I don't believe you actually started that saw on the third pull! ☺
haha! I didn't edit the starting shot :)
awesome saw!
I agree :)
The good news about this saw is you can get replacement parts from huztl for cheap.
That thing is sick!!!
heck yes!
run it rich with good motocross oil
25-1
I can hear the neighbors now. " There he goes again!!!" LOL!!!
Now that's manly. Did it actually start on the second pull? I want to see it work on the mill.
Greg
Yes, I didn't edit anything out of me starting it besides walking over to the saw from the camera. I was really surprised it started so quickly. Even my newer saws take more than two pulls to start. Thanks Greg!
