    No one is ever perfecting legato like this. Holdsworth is cheering you on from the grave!

    They definitely sound like Holdsworth and Tatum, but about twice as fast which is of course a nice thing. Cheers and Merry Christmas.

    Great playing, as always, Roy. There’s something I’ve been wondering about picking fast and I thought you seemed like the best person to ask, hope you don’t mind.
    Most people will say to stay relaxed when picking fast, but I’ve been a little confused about how relaxed I should be. I pick from the wrist, but it feels impossible to pick at my fastest speed without the back of my elbow flexing slightly. Is a little bit of flexing/tension necessary to go outside your comfort zone, or should your arm actually be as relaxed as it is when you’re not picking at all?

  • @lambskin89

    hey bro, what did you do to get a good response from the MIDI pickup with fast legato licks ? Thanks! sick playing btw

    • @LawofThree
      @LawofThree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks! This is using Roland’s COSM. It’s not triggering a sample so the latency is almost insignificant because the Midi pickup is more or less functioning like a normal pickup. The VG88 V2 unit with a GK2A pickup in many ways I believe was ahead of its time.

    • @lambskin89
      @lambskin89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LawofThree wow, so stock ? I ask because another guy on TH-cam said it doesn't pick up well but it could be his legato I suppose lol

    • @lambskin89
      @lambskin89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do I need the COSM to achieve the response and accuracy you get from legato?

    • @LawofThree
      @LawofThree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lambskin89 It’s using the GK2A pickup as a passive pickup. I kind of bent the rules a little with this unit. Normally the pickup should be placed right back at the saddle. But I discovered it functions and sounds better near the centre pickup for COSM sounds.
      MIDI and COSM are very different animals.
      The VG88 V2 is a great unit with this pickup. Endless possibilities. For MIDI and triggering samples though you can’t go wrong with Jam Origin 2. I discovered it during lockdown. First time ever I’ve used sample based technology that actually works!

    • @LawofThree
      @LawofThree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lambskin89 not anymore! Jam Origin 2 tracks just as well and that is using samples. COSM is fantastic on the VG88 V2 unit but it does take quite a bit of tweaking.

    VG-99? GP-10? GR-55? It sounds like you're processing the attacks of the notes in a particular way so it sounds really different and interesting - the pick attack is muted or attenuated in some way on these. Some of the lines are like Conlon Nancarrow! Cool.

    • @LawofThree
      @LawofThree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey there. For this clip it is a synth patch on the Roland VG88 using COSM. Do you understand how COSM works or shall I explain it more thoroughly? All the notes are played with hammer legato as you can see. The ADSR on this setting is supposed to emulate a bowed violin string. I tweaked the patch to sound like some of Holdsworth’s SynthAxe tones. Now, it’s good to hear you have a positive interest as I have heard what you have said about me in other places and it’s generally been pretty negative. I like to be asked directly about things to my face and at least that way if you pass it on you’ should be getting it right. I am more than happy to help you understand how I play, which is very different depending on each track, each guitar etc. Just like any other musician, effect processors are used sometimes and other times not. The funny thing is I seem to be one of the only guitarists people get up the arse of with a microscope 🤣 I have no problem with that as long as they are honest about it. If you need to further clarify anything with me you are welcome to a Free Skype. Go to roymarchbankguitar.com and contact me to arrange it. I feel this way you’ll not be able to then mislead anyone further.

      @@LawofThree Roy - just wanted to apologize up front and publicly for my rude comments regarding your playing. I wasn't trying to be but I guess I can be too direct for my own good and I was being stupid. After watching some more videos and seeing you are playing with Ed DeGenaro's friend Atma (former Shrapnel records house drummer) and Steve Kindler I eagerly look forward to what you will be doing next. Again, sorry for me being an idiot. -T

      @@aliensporebomb I sincerely hope the apology is sincere. Asking me this question here on YT isn’t the issue - despite being direct as you put it. You and I both know it came at a time you were having a discussion about this track on the URAH forum. Two days ago I was sent screen shots of your comments on a thread on URAH. Your claims to knowing how I play, the nonsense about me having ‘twitch muscles from outer space’ ‘ridiculously smoothing out notes’ and that you need to see me improvise as part of a group (just to see if I can?!). It’s not just URAH, think you were also spotted on a few ED D posts stating similar and on the CTC forum. So again, in order to get things straight in your head you are offered a nice polite but thorough free Skype with me to clear up your misconceptions. If you don’t take it and your borderline passive aggressive comments on various threads and forums do not cease then I can only assume your apology was insincere and you’d prefer to spread misinformation.Have some respect for the years of dedication not just to my technique but to my music. If that’s not possible for you, you need to ask yourself why it’s not. Had you not come across passive aggressive from the outset you wouldn’t have ever initially been blocked on Facebook. Look forward to meeting you. Let’s turn this around.

    • @aliensporebomb

      @@LawofThree You might misunderstand. I'm probably a lot older than you - humans have slow twitch and fast twitch muscles. But the fast twitch muscles are only there when you are young and only stay active so long as you use them. So, lots of dedication and practice. But it's not anyone can play like that straight away, it takes lots of hard work (in other words, years and years of practice and dedication) and then you have to keep playing/practicing like that at a high level as long as you can as when we age you start losing them. The phrase "use it or lose it" is so true! An example would be tour de france cyclists who retire for some years and then try to come back without riding much in the interim. They might find that their ability to accelerate is so different. As we age stuff starts to happen. A good example on the musician side who "bucked the trend" would be pianist Martha Argerich who has kept her virtuoso skills into her 80s. I don't think you'll have anything to worry about though - just don't ever stop playing. As far as your note attacks, they're just eerily smooth - aka advanced hammer/lift technique. I see you use Roland VG technology which does allow you to do unusual things to the guitars sound but if you were just some guy off the street it wouldn't sound that way. Again hard work and dedication. My rude comments came from a long week with lack of sleep and basically being an idiot. Peace.

    • @LawofThree
      @LawofThree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@aliensporebomb I think how one frames the fast twitch theory, like how we frame or contextualise any comment, can influence a reader. This is especially important when commenting on someone else’s work and career. Had you explained more in your posts on URAH (and elsewhere) as you have here, they may not have come across quite as derogatory as they did. This wasn’t just the impression I got, they irked a number of my students/followers too.
      Putting that aside, apology accepted. I hope we can move forward without the need to have further public interaction of this nature. The invitation to a free Skype is an open one. If you would like to check out my improvisational skills for instance - this would be the ideal opportunity. Til then you can check out the improv with myself and Atma, live in his studio. The video is on my YT. Regards Roy.
