Thank you for this video. I always wanted a sewing machine and last year my husband and I noticed a small table someone left out on the curb. We took it intending to use as a night stand. Turned out to be a sewing machine! I haven't used it but this video inspired me to inspect my machine. It is a Singer 201-2 from 1955. The table is painted white but I plan to strip the paint and stain a dark wood color. 🖤
How do you get so lucky to score a 202-2 without knowing it's the #1 desired vintage machine for almost everyone, but with 2, 15-91's a 15-88, a 401a my wife won't let me look for another. Good luck with the 201.
+1 that is a great score! My favorite is a 15-91 but the 201 is good and famous. It was known as the 'Rolls Royce' model because RR commissioned Singer to build that machine for their upholstery factory. Singer must have been competing against White to get the contract and White used rotary bobbin hooks not oscillating hooks that most Singers have.
Nice job! Just FYI: The machine head can easily be removed from the cabinet for whatever reason. Tilt it back and you’ll see it's connected to the hinges (which are connected to the cabinet) with 2 set/"grub" screws. Just loosen them a bit, and the machine will lift right off. Don't remove the screws or they'll get lost. When it's time to put the machine head back in the cabinet, a rubber band around the stick portions of the hinges will help keep them lined up for the machine while you tighten the screws. 😊
Oh I would so love to have a young person like yourself to restore my grandmother, then mother's, antique sewing machine. I am now older and disabled and cannot do such work anymore myself. It is something I treasure greatly and what I learned to sew on. My own clothes had been made on this machine as had my grandmother and mother's. Mom even made all my doll clothes on this machine. But getting back to the sewing machine, I think like yours, it would work again with some deep cleaning and oiling. I think it was working still when we stopped using it and it simply was a piece of pretty furniture in my parent's room. It has a few places where the veneer came off, but mother saved it and was going to glue it back on the sewing machine and another piece of furniture we still have. We never got around to it. Mother got to where I had to give her full cares while also working in my career as an RN. Times were difficult and things she really wanted done did not get done. I sure don't know what to do with this piece of family history and wish I could actually use it to sew some curtains with!!! The machine looks so much like yours and it too has the knee peddle. Takes skill and patience to use I recall. It was well taken care of back in the day, but not in decades...Help! Nashville, TN area if anyone could help an old girl out.
15-91 models are my favorite and that machine came to you in perfect shape. Great job on the cabinet restoration. Too many drinks and plants have destroyed such tables, that sold for nearly as much as the machines -- either of which was a big price back in their day.
Such a fabulous machine! Bob Fowler has wonderful TH-cam videos on how to get your machine in tip top working order. Don't use anything but sewing machine oil to clean the machine decals.
Bob Fowler’s videos are great. Thanks to him, I have restored several machines this year and I had never done anything like this before. He is wonderful about responding if the videos don’t cover something about yours.
Awesome job!!! I saw the sewing machine in the video for Halloween decorations and had to come look at the renovations. I did the same thing bought an old desk thrifting for a computer table as I needed it to be small but these old sewing tables all fold out so you have more table space. I found it for $15 and then realized it came with a heavy cast iron kenmore. I never did use the desk for a computer table as I didn't get a computer for upstairs, but kept the machine of course... then a few years back I bought a new kenmore that fit the desk so had to figured out how to remove the old machine which was not easy as it was so heavy (also discovered it was a knee sewer, but the new kenmore pedal foot pedal plugged right in) the newer machine is still vintage mint green metal machine built in japan in the 70s that has a zig zag with a beautiful satin stitch which is what I was looking for !!! Recently, I decided I needed to sew again, and starting seeing all these new featherweights being rebuilt for a lot of money, and got tempted. Then I thought I have a great straight sewing machine I believe made by the white company during the world war so very few were even built those years so I just need to work on that not spending the thousands for a featherweight, so a couple months back I just asked my Dad if he wanted to work on an old machine, but I forgot to bring it to him when I went home to visit. I should just try to clean it myself!!! Anyways, always looking for something forgetting you already have one in the house!!! Nice reno!!! I know it sews better than any new machine you could have bought!!!
You can get them at the hardware store! This is the exact one I got but they sell them in different lengths and types of wood: www.homedepot.com/p/EDGEMATE-24-in-x-96-in-Cherry-Wood-Veneer-with-10-mil-Paper-Backer-8101034/206942940
Your video is dark making it difficult to see what your doing. The bit I did sea looked nice but there again some window opening or a bright light. I my self got one in a recycled rubbish. Brought it home and got the moter running another thing is using suger soap diluted in warm or cold water good for degrees the old oil that prevents it from moving plus lighter fluid to clean the real grease in the gear rods it get that old caked oil that prevent the movement of the singer sowing machine. Thank you so much for watching 🖤 What sewing project should I christen this machine with? Perhaps I'll film it
Oooh, a satin-lined hooded cape for sure! I can just see you getting your red-riding hood look going with a basket in the woods. 😄
Loved watching you restore and not just "redo" the machine and cabinet. It's a great machine!
Thanks so much 🖤

Ahh thank you for this, I knew there had to be a way. This is super helpful 🖤

Yeah, I'm so glad it was in good shape. Thank you so much 🖤
The table was in dire need of repair. You did a great job on that and you showed me how to clean and care for my machine. thank you. Merry Christmas.

Late to the party, but I guess you figured out the original foot pedal was attached inside the cabinet next to the knee lever?
I did haha took me a while
Beautiful job! I was really questioning when I saw you scraping off the veneer at first but the new veneer made it look brand new
Thank you 🖤 Had my fingers crossed the entire time
Wow, such a fabulous restore ❤
This came out gorgeous. Loving your content!
Thank you so much 🖤

I got this same setup last May. Thankfully my cabinet is in very good condition. The machine did need professionally serviced.
Aww such a fun find, happy sewing! 🖤
Where do you buy the veneer, would you post the link?
