Could you cut an inch off the gusset and use that on your zipper side? You would have to use different shaped tabs for the shoulder strap. Could you top stitch along the drip zipper edge to help with zipping? Just a thought.

I would try starting and stopping at the top of the heart, butting the binding at that point so it lies flat.
