I actually enjoyed your honesty here. I agree on the point of not being as emotionally invested as I wanted to be. I still think it’s a breathtaking film though
I don't feel that the directors intention was to have "fart jokes" in the film. Hey guess what...people fart, especially men in front of other men. For me it was just a touch of authenticity.
I loved the film. Beautifully shot, amazing Lynchian sound design and overflowing with rich, multilayered thematic elements. Plus, it was just creepy as hell, up there with Eraserhead, The Shining and Session 9. I agree in general with you on fart jokes, but I thought it worked here. It added to the claustrophobic atmosphere and also the character's mixture of disrespect for youth and disregard for societal norms.
I agree. I wouldn't call them fart "jokes" just because some audience members inevitably laugh. They're character based quirks. Contrast that with, say, Adam Sandler's character on Click pausing his boss with the remote and proceeding to get on his desk, squat, and fart excessively into the boss's face.
Probably a year and a half ago, before “The Lighthouse” was even announced to be in the making, a rumor was raised that Robert Eggers would be in charge for an upcoming “Nosferatu” (1922) remake. I hope this is true
***Spoilers**** Some random thoughts as I was watching "The Lighthouse". - The crowd is mostly older people and it's about a third full. - The black and white looks great. High contrast. - Nice sound effects with the horn of the boat. - Can't understand what Willem Dafoe is saying. - OK, he sounds like Donald Duck. Slurring everything. Can understand him now. - Willem is bossing Robert around. He's going to drive him mad. - Robert doing chores. Willem mentions the previous mate went mad. Classic foreshadowing. - The idea of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse keeps coming up in my mind. Bossy Donald Duck is picking on nice poor Mickey Mouse. - I'm starting to like the seagull. - The death of the seagull and the mermaid is really good. At this point, I'm hopeful. - They miss the boat. They're dead. - They start drinking and arguing. The acting is really good. - Shit hits Robert's face. Funny. Good thing they didn't show a close-up. - Enough with the drinking. I'm getting disappointed. - Some weird imagery starts popping up. I guess to show Robert is getting mad. I take note in my mind that some people will read too much into them. - Robert is masturbating while naked and crying. Robert fans will salivate over this. - Willem does his monologues. I wish his monologue about king Triton was literal. I was picturing it in my head, and missed some of his dialogue. - Robert is leading Willem like a dog on a leash. Out of character, he'll fight more. - Willem getting buried alive. Weird that he's just giving up. Robert leaves him alive. OK, Willem is definitely coming back for revenge. Too obvious. - Willem is dead. More weird imagery. Once again, I think of people who will read too much into this. - I see an older woman walk out. I don't blame her. I'm rating it 3 out of 5 stars in my head, mostly for the filmmaking and performance aspects, not the story. - The seagulls are eating Robert alive. Interesting image.
I just love how in 2019 we got something like Endgame and now The Lighthouse. It's great for those of us who love the wide spectrum of cinema. I also love the black and white review, I believe it would fit greatly with some horror titles, for example, I don't know... THE CROW? *wink* *wink*
This is an excellent, atmospheric film that grabs your attention right from the start with fine acting by Dafoe, Patterson and the one-eyed seagull; superb B&W cinematography; a great score (including ominous fog horn); and thoughtful editing. The only real problem I think is the dialogue - Dafoe's character is just a bit too garrulous. While I enjoyed much of Dafoe's poetic, seafaring dialect I think Eggars got somewhat carried away by having Defoe say too much. Such a strikingly visual and atmospheric film would have benefitted with less dialogue and more poignant silences and body language. The references to Prometheus are also a little laboured. However, there's no doubt Eggars is a compelling cinema talent.
I was going to leave a nice comment about your hair but you blew my mind when you mentioned that the same director from The Witch might also direct Nosferatu. That sounds so perfect, I hope it still happens. Oh yeah, nice hair do.

Nice review! I definitely agree that this is a pretty difficult movie to describe. It's very weird, but I loved the technical aspects and cinematography.
8/10 for sure! Everything was absolutely perfect, except for maybe the third fart scene & the lack of emotional connection that I missed out on. I did not hold an emotional connection that I did for the Witch which is still my favorite out of the two he’s created. Yet, I am eagerly waiting for Eggers next.
I think I would have enjoyed the film more if there were subtitles. I completely agree on the lack of emotionally connection. The fart jokes are perfect because they set a certain vibe of absurdity that develops throughout the story and also if you recall as he was farting he was pissing in his bedpan in the room that they both share so we have this notion of personal space being depleted.

I may disagree with just one point. Your idea of the necessity of an emotional connection. I personally think that, even if it's not connected at all with Virgina Woolf's book "To the Lighthouse", it reminded me of it for its strong ambiguity and sense of alienation. Very nice I was looking forward to this. Huge fan of The Witch as well and did you know Dafoe was? After seeing the film he asked his agent if he could have a meeting with Eggers and the rest is foghorn madness.
I agree with this review. It was refreshing to see someone with some of the reservations I had. While I LOVED it on an aesthetic level, I didn't get a lot of meaning out of the story. I thought it would have been better if one of the characters had maintained his sanity. As it was, you didn't have anything to ground you. It's still a terrific movie, but this is the reason Parasite is so superior to me. It has more to say.
My experience with this movie was pretty much the same as yours. I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't as satisfied as I was with The Witch. I'm sure we'll get more from a second viewing. So now we now. More foghorn, less farts.
I just wanna say something about the rating system , the reason I said you should use a rating system out of 10 is because you can give movies more detailed scores without looking obsessive , like you can give a movie an 8.5/10 and it seems normal but a 4.25/5 (essentially the same thing ) seems obsessive with a 5 star system .
To be honest, I wouldn't do half stars with a 10 point system. I think 10 points is plenty of range, I don't really know what 8.5 would be - it's either an 8 or a 9, breaking it down further is too much for me.
Yeah I’m an 8 out of 10 as well. Me personally I did get an emotional response from it. It’s during the scenes that Winslow feels alone and has that mermaid figure to hold on to. Also I’m thinking Eggers could be influenced by Ingmar Bergman’s Persona when you get to the final minutes.
yeah, I also felt a strong Bergman vibe with this one. But not only in the final minutes. The whole two-people-on-an-isolated-island setting comes up in a couple of Bergman films. The cinematography aswell is very similar as in "hour of the wolf" and the nightmarish, sexual visions seem to also reference him.
I love the review. You besically read my mind, saying every single thing that I wanted to say. However one thing that I don't agree with you is that you giving 8. You got a like and a sub for yourself.
Ratings are always very personal for me, so the number is heavily influenced by how much I enjoyed/connected with the film. And thank you! Welcome to my channel!
Nice review, while keeping it vague. Trying to go I this movie a bit blind. I was interested in this film due to the people involved. I have to say, though; New England setting, ambiguity, mythology? Lovecraft, is that you?
Emotional attachment was missing, farts weren't jokes but just being forced to live with someone and their funk & quirks, plus the square film was 16mm film?
Man, I love The VVitch and I'm dying to see this movie, Robert Eggers is a genius. Unfortunately it will only arrive on theaters in January here in my country :(
I was super gutted also until I found out that Leeds Town Hall were premiering it tonight. Just got home from watching it, totally head thrashing stuff but I loved it!
I think I’ll pass on this film for now. Doesn’t really seem like my kind of thing. Wasn’t that big of a fan of The Witch either. I thought that film was overrated.
I think the trailer represents it pretty well, though it shows a bit too much from the third act. But if it doesn't look like your thing from the trailer - it probably isn't.
I also loved the witch. I can appreciate artistic and ambiguous films but for some reason I did not connect with this one. I never got to the point of caring for it. Not bad acting or cinematography. Just didn't care.
I didn’t want to watch the review until after I’d seen the movie for myself. Really looking forward to it. ... 31st of January 2020 in UK????? Ffs it will be on digital download by then!!!
@@BrianDePalmaII I'm with you. Parasite is spectacular. The Lighthouse is begging to be my favorite if only for the style and the madness. But I just can't decide. Is tying for the number 1 spot bad?

I just wanna say something about the rating system , the reason I said you should use a rating system out of 10 is because you can give movies more detailed scores without looking obsessive , like you can give a movie an 8.5/10 and it seems normal but a 4.25/5 (essentially the same thing ) seems obsessive with a 5 star system .
To be honest, I wouldn't do half stars with a 10 point system. I think 10 points is plenty of range, I don't really know what 8.5 would be - it's either an 8 or a 9, breaking it down further is too much for me.

Don't feel it was to engage emotionally it was in fact to make us feel separate and isolated as where the character's.
Unfortunately it will only arrive on theaters in January here in my country :(
Aww, sorry you have to wait! But totally worth it
You're lucky. My country doesn't get it at all
Willem Dafoe was awesome
4:36 Don’t worry Mariana. I hate them too.
Watching this move It feels like a visit to the dentist 😷
Good review, check your audio there is Eco where you record
I agree 100%. Fart jokes are juvenile and not funny. Beauty and brains you are.
2 hours into watching the movie and my fiancee leans over and tells me "it's only been an hour???"
Mind fucking blown.
🚨Whoop, whoop🚨 Two white men in a film. Call the Southern Poverty Law Center!
I really enjoyed it.
sometimes i go into films a little tired and can come to such conclusions as you did?
I'm gonna try to do a rewatch of VVitch & Midsommar Thursday before I deep dive into my attempt to get 50k starting midnight Friday.
Good luck!!
Great Review. I hope this get's released in my County.
Thank you! I'm sure it will eventually
I'm legit heartbroken that we don't get The Lighthouse til the 31st of January 😭😔
Aww UK release dates strike again (((
I was super gutted also until I found out that Leeds Town Hall were premiering it tonight. Just got home from watching it, totally head thrashing stuff but I loved it!
Monochrome Marianna is best Marianna
Great review and that skull is distracting. 😄
Yea, I'm not sure why that is, but that was definitely missing for me.
If you watch it as a parody of a really bad student film, it kind of works. I wouldn't take it seriously though.
Uhm exactly
I was hoping for some in-depth review and analysis. Oh well oh well george owell.
I dont find fart jokes funny either, but I'm pretty sure that they were added to keep the movie from seeming too pretentious... if that makes sense.
I didn’t want to watch the review until after I’d seen the movie for myself. Really looking forward to it. ... 31st of January 2020 in UK????? Ffs it will be on digital download by then!!!
Man, this too? As if it's not enough that you have to wait for "Parasite" until February ((
yes, it is available on couple of pirate platforms for half a month allready
Spoiler
The excessive alcohol consumption is the big underlying motivator in what this movie is all about if you ask me.
Hi
The movie is basically Jacob's ladder....ish
5/5 for me!!!
Niceeee! Favorite of the year?
Impression Blend At the moment, Parasite is #1 for me, but I can see the Lighthouse easily taking it over. We’ll have to see!
@@BrianDePalmaII I'm with you. Parasite is spectacular. The Lighthouse is begging to be my favorite if only for the style and the madness. But I just can't decide. Is tying for the number 1 spot bad?
Parasite is masterpiece and my number 1. The lighthouse is cool and I think it’s an excellent film but I don’t love it at all.
Yooo i thought that was emma watson in the thumbnail
Not into this freaky ass California shit. Caveman on caveman shit bout made me hurl yo. I give it a 4.2 out of 10
