  • On today's podcast, Ashley Thompson and Dan Novak host the show. Ashley tells listeners what they are going to hear.
First, Dan has a story about the war effort in Ukraine. A family-run workshop is making remote-controlled stretchers. They are used to rescue wounded troops as Russia's invasion continues and Kyiv seeks new battlefield solutions. The business is called Tank Bureau and it is supported by the Ukrainian government.
Next, John Russell has a story about a government effort in Tokyo.
Tokyo is starting a campaign to create more couples, or “futari.” The goal is to increase marriage and childbirth. The city has a website and is developing an app. The hope is that the program can be part of a nationwide effort to reverse a long decline in the national birthrate and a resulting labor shortage.
After that, Anna Matteo and Andrew Smith have the health and lifestyle report. Anna reports that scientists are testing next-generation vaccines to deal with the spread of bird flu in the United States. The vaccines use the same mRNA technology that led to the development of COVID-19 shots in record time. The bird flu has been found in U.S. dairy cows. The resulting illnesses were not severe. But officials say they want to be prepared.
Following the report, Ashley and Anna have a discussion about a word often used in connection with stories about viral diseases: emerge. Anna explains how the word is used in connection to issues of pubic health.
Finally, on Lesson of the Day, Andrew and Faith Pirlo explain what junk food is. That leads to a discussion about the expression "guilty pleasures." In lesson 44 of Let's Learn English, Anna Matteo has an internal conflict about whether she should eat junk food or healthy food. Andrew and Faith explain that doing or eating things that are not good for us in small amounts is often called a guilty pleasure.
After that, Ashley and Dan sign off.
