Every time I hear an exegete accuse the apostles of going back to their old jobs and abandoning Jesus, I want to scream. That interpretation is ancient, but has been rejected by the church fathers the whole time. Why won't it go away?!
I know we aren't supposed to really be looking at the bible for answers, but the way the ecclesia is described there is much different than the Catholic church (and even most other church institutions)...
The church started by King Henry VIII, the Adulterer, is not the Church. The Church is a family. If a King cannot honor the sacrament of marriage, what gives him the authority to run a Church? A country? St. Anselm, whose feast day it is, and who served God in England, pray for us!
