Robert and I would be the same age. I'm 59. I graduated in 1982. I've had a whole life with marriage, 2 grown children and 8 grandchildren. I'm retired from the hospital and enjoying life.
So sorry Robert . You deserved a full life too.
My heart hurts for you and your family 💔
Much love from North Carolina, USA 🌷
Winston Salem here
Same year for me, too
Sometimes there are no answers, which has got to be incredibly heartbreaking for his family. They're only left wondering what happened. 💔
I’m from Thurso and this case haunts me. Things like vanishings, or missing people just don’t happen here, it’s very low crime, although not without small areas of like most. Robert did literally vanish, there aren’t any local rumours to what happened, as can sometimes be the case, so puzzling.
I really hope they try for a break through very sad this one especially as it was his birthday poor soul
I remember hearing about a guy from New Jersey or somewhere who had the day off and decided last minute to drive out of state and go to the shore and go for a swim. He went alone and didn't tell anyone he was going. Unfortunately he accidently drowned and it created a "missing off the face of the earth" scenario. His body never washed up and it took 30 plus years for authorites to finally figure out what happened to him. I'm not sure how they were able to trace it (maybe it had something to do with the vehicle he took or the mode of transportation he took to get there) but eventually it was figured out. He wasn't suicidal, wasn't the victim of a crime, just decided to go to a place he'd never been before way away from home without telling anyone and was planning to return but things went wrong. I imagine all these other cases where they don't have that "break" in the case where it's figured out what happened to them.
His mother died at quite a young age I wonder did the heartbreak of her son disappearing have anything to do with it its not unusual to hear about a parent dying after such a tragedy like this
She also worked at a nuclear power station...
The real tragedy here is........... your lack of punctuation. 😊
@@fishandchipsupperor that your callous, mean-spirited, yet-anonymous comment brought you pleasure. That's rather sad, actually.
@@fishandchipsupperFunny you'd comment about someone's punctuation. It's "your", not "you're". People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
@fishandchipsupper I think the "Real Tragedy" is your need to make a snarky comment. It says a lot about you. Period and exclamation mark 😒
The fact that it was his 18th birthday and he was reported traveling suggests he had decided in advance to leave as soon as he was legally able. Sometimes people just do things that are inexplicable to the rest of us.
A very sad tale, especially with no closure.
Poor Robert. So many possibilities for his vanishing. Thank you DC for another interesting episode.
I think suicide is quite unlikely in this case, given his demeanour at the time and lack of a found body. Not completely possible to rule out of course, but I suspect this one involves foul play.
I am pretty sure that he either died or was abducted that day. It sounds very unlikely he would plan to leave home without his inhaler. I really hope there is a miraculous break in this case for the surviving Adaway family members someday.
So heartbreaking the family never got answers to what became of their son. Perhaps Robert was the victim of a terrible accident. Wherever you are Robert, I hope one day the truth will unfold.
Very sad for the family but I think is very odd that he vanished in a small isolated city in Scotland with low crime rate.! What could have happened to him..? At least some clues should have been discovered..
My best wishes to his family hopefully someday may know what happened to him and find the peace they deserve.
A river that leads to the North Sea.
Another one of those most heartbreaking and frustrating cases where someone simply disappears without a trace. Such a pity that his loved ones may never know what really happened.
Sad situation. I hope his case gets resolved soon.
Like Andrew Gosden there seem to be likely possibilities, both boys may have been lured into harms way or they may harbored a secret unhappiness they shared with no one. It is a wrenching story and one can only hope he is at peace.
This is heartbreaking
Thank you for all the hard work you put into your channel, excellent as always. ❤
How horrible. No clues, no evidence of anything. Truly empty, sad case
Beautiful little town. Didnt look like a place bad stuff happens.
I enjoy the narration and wonder at the lack of “likes”!
What a nightmare for the family. This case hasn't had the same attention as the Kevin McLeod case, but it certainly deserves it.
Or the Madeleine McCann case. £13m spent.
@@bloodandalgore2481This case happened many decades ago, long before social media or even the internet. Its more than 40 years old, many changes have been made in the way MP cases are handled.
Were there any other cases like this in the area?
I was just rewatching ur case compilations cause I wanted to endulge in some dc content! So excited to watch this, vanishings like this always pique my interest.
I think he was a deeply troubled young man who may have felt like his 18th birthday was a watershed. He seems to have decided to have taken off, for some reason.
Wow I’m from Shetland which is pretty close but never heard of this.
June in the Highlands is near 24hr daylight. Maybe he thought he could go off on some wild camping trip to mark his 18th birthday and got horribly disoriented.
I was thinking that too. Maybe he was hitch hiking to somewhere that might be a starting point for a remote hike. He had forgotten his inhaler which is an additional risk factor. It's very sad.
Why hasn’t the Body been recovered then ? Wouldn’t his remains had been discovered if there wasn’t foul play ? Like if he had an asthma attack and passed he’d have fell somewhere and at some point someone would have discovered his remains. Not like he’d burry himself after dying from an asthma attack 🤷🏻♀️
It’s likely he crossed paths with a nefarious person and wound up dead.
@@Makahagrl218 Check out the disappearance of TH-camr Finn Creaney. It's possible for people to totally disappear up there.
You'd take your inhaler camping for sure.
Without a body this case can never be closed i can only imagine how frustrating it is for his family to not know for definite what happened to him at least if he was dead and they knew how he died they would be able to come to terms with it in their own way but without a body at all its extremely hard to take
Given how abrupt his disappearance was and the complete lack of evidence surrounding it, I can't help but wonder if he fell victim to an accident and was never found or possibly hit by a car and concealed by the driver?
I’m just 3 minutes into this video and before I watch the rest I’d like to share my experience I had in Thurso back in 2001. Me and a man called Bill Kerr traveled to Thurso from Kilmalcolm in Renfrewshire down south west. We were attending a Christian youth event called ‘Riding the wave’ I was 18. When we got to Thurso we stayed at this youth hostel place just over the bridge from the town centre. I think most people have experienced Dejavu before but this was on a completely different level than anything I’ve experienced before. When we walked through the main door of the hostel, straight ahead was a wall mural painting of a Tiger 🐯 appearing through tall grass bull rush type grass and as soon as I saw it I had such a dejavu that it was almost physical and felt like a flash or a lightning bolt ⚡️ straight through my brain. And I knew I’d seen this before and been here before (even though I’d never been this far up the British isles ever before) I felt dizzy from the shock of it. And then I needed the toilet and turned right to go to the toilets and as soon as my hand touched the door knob I had another lightning type flash through my mind again like I’d been struck by lightning. Everywhere I went in this building and every room I kept experiencing it over and over again. But left frustrated that I had no answer to what I was experiencing. Does anyone come from Thurso know what place I’m talking about? And if so does anyone know of the history of this building? Maybe a murder happened here, or maybe a body is buried beneath it? I don’t know but I do know that what I experienced was no coincidence and something is in that building.
I don’t understand. You think someone was murdered or buried there because you had extreme deja vu?
Pontius Pilate was from Scotland so maybe it was the murder of Jesus.
That Tiger mural was very common. It's on a Santana LP cover ( I think). Buildings are all the same design and construction. It's not surprising that you had Deja vu.
I think that you're missing the point of the mural. The mural could be a warning from the mind of a psycho.
I'd first talk with your parents, as maybe they had stayed there in their youth, and have photos of it, or strong memories. Or maybe your "memories" come from an older sibling.
I believe certain things are imprinted on a person, and passed on to their offspring.
I hope you find out more. Good luck to you.
@@horrortackleharry jesus never existed!
So sad, it cant be good. You would think someone knew something, by now they may not be around either.
I usually don´t take seriously family claims about "everything was fine, there is no reason why my X family member went missing". Is not that they could be wrong, but sometimes people are good at hiding their suicidal thoughts - and if there is some sort of family abuse that could contribute to a son/daughter to commit suicide, the parents ofc aren´t going to confess about it after it happened. He was about to be 18 years old - it´s one of those moments when you have a so-called "life crisis". It is that moment where what is left of your childhood goes away and you stop seeing many of your school friends which you spent your time with for many years.
I know many people consider it to be "cruel" to look into the family as suspects, but when you don´t know anything about the dissapearance, there is no other avenue of investigation you can look into but that.
Undoubtedly foul play. To many signs he didn’t leave on his on and no apparent reason to. Very sad his loved ones have no answers.
I tried to look at the area but it's not something you can really understand from google maps. Are there any marshes, wetlands and similar sites around that town? Maybe he went for a brief excursion and fell or got stuck somewhere. I would rule out drowning in the sea, since his body would have been likely found... but marshes are tricky, they just swallow you up. Was he known for going for long walks on his own in the surrounding area? Somehow I don't believe in a kidnapping or suicide, nor a voluntary disappearance. Foul play too sounds weird. But what do I know... It's just that disappearances drive me nuts.
You could be blown away by the wind in that area. People have been known to die from being blown off cliffs.
I think it's torture for the family when a loved one goes missing and then presumed dead never knowing what happened, although this case I think will never be solved it's very sad. Thank you, DC 👏👏💜
Is that Betty Boop?
No it's you...😊😊😊@@mikebond6328
😢💔
He looks like Amelia Earhart
No. U.
i thought he look like a woman
Hmmm....I'd have to say here the answer may lie in the rucksack. I've heard that in that specific area an underground black market existed and rucks were bringing premium prices. If Robert had a full SACK of 'em, it could explain why he may have been targeted...🤔
For some reason I feel like Robert chose to leave.
I don’t get any sense of sinister actions or fowl play. Maybe he was unhappy at home. Not treated well for example, or maybe he felt misunderstood and miserable.
He would have known if he left at 17 he would be considered a minor and returned to his parents. But at 18 he would be considered an adult and nobody could do a thing if he wanted to leave.
I feel like Robert thought to himself ‘ I’m 18!! I’m an adult! I’m off to live MY life the way I want to live it! And off he went as simple as that. Especially considering there were sightings reported to Police of a young man with a rucksack.
Robert could have bought himself a bus ticket and rode away toward a brand new life.
It doesn’t explain leaving behind something important like his inhaler… unless he deliberately wanted to make it look like he was still around the area while secretly taking off.
As an adult he could go to a doctor by himself and get a new inhaler. Under a new name too! You can change your name at 18. Going along with the plans of the birthday dinner could have also been done to throw off any idea that he was planning to leave.
Hope you had a happy 18th birthday Robert. Hope you sat in a restaurant and treated yourself to a steak dinner for your birthday! Hope you paid for it with your own money and felt like the king of the world. Hope you felt like today was the first day of the rest of your life! And I hope you went out there and lived it to the full.
The absence of a body, or any evidence of foul play, leads to the most likely conclusion being the simplest one - that he either committed suicide in some way that led to his body ending up in the sea, or otherwise fell into the river/ sea. It is _possible_ that he was killed and thrown into the river/ sea, but that seems less likely as there is no evidence to support that suggestion.
Lots of country lanes with no pavement (sidewalk), it is possible he was hit by a car and killed and the driver covered it up by hiding the body. Also, back in those days it is possibly he was homosexual and didn't want his family to know, couldn't face a family party with that secret and decided to make a life elsewhere.
@nlwilson4892 I am sceptical that a random driver who hit and killed a pedestrian would have the time, resources, local knowledge, and equipment to clear up any evidence at the location, including blood on the road, and conceal a body such that decades later it hasn't been found. Is it _possible? Maybe,_ but I think it is rather unlikely.
The idea that he ran away because he was homosexual is, quite frankly, a flight of fancy, unsupported by any evidence, so again "possible but unlikely".
@@pulaski1 There's not necessarily going to be much blood to clean-up and there is lots of vast open countryside, rivers and coastline. There's people go missing in places like that with the body not being found for years.
Why do you think it is unlikely that he was homosexual? 18 and no mention of a girlfriend. I'm not saying he was, just that it is a possibility.
@nlwilson4892 I'm not disagreeing that either suggestion is _possible,_ they just both seem relatively unlikely, though for the reasons I already stated, I think a random motorist accidentally killing him and taking the time and effort to remove and dispose of the body is a stretch, not least because you'd need a motorist with a near-psychopathic lack of empathy.
Also, I think it is unlikely that a collision with a pedestrian could be BOTH near-instantly fatal AND caused little blood loss at the scene - that is a _very_ narrow window of possibility. Each one is _very_ possible, but both together? I don't think so.
@@pulaski1 People bleed less when they're dead because there is no heart pumping the blood around. On country roads he could easily be flung off the road. Also, it is possible that he didn't immediately die but someone put him in the car to take him to hospital and panicked when he died on route.
The Asthma clue. I think the kid died due to Asthma.
My two brothers both died, as adults, from Asthma related causes. One from Anaphalaxia, the other alcohol and Asthma combination.
Buy your Asthmatic an epi pen and swimming lessons. Strangely both my brothers had wavy hair. My sister and I have straight hair and no Asthma.
Everything is a possibility, but then his body maybe find?🤷♀️
I have straight hair, and asthma all my life. Life has been transformed since I was prescribed Symbicort, but I notice the minute it wears off.
His body would have most likely been discovered if that were the case.
It seems though if that were the case, his body would have been found
Someone needs to tell us whether or not any of his belongings were missing. If he'd emptied his bedroom, or not, then we'd find it easier to guess what happened. I also was 18 in 1982.
Exactly. That’s what we need to know!
👍🍷
Homosexual who didn't want to leave the closet in his hometown?? Maybe his family was openly against homosexual relations and he felt zero support to come out as the one he really was
Just another case of a young person DUMPING his family to start a new life without them AND of a family who can't accept that They may be what their "loved one" has run away from.
Happy Trails, Robert !!! I hope that your new life was somehow more satisfying than the old life you left behind !!!
A sad story of a young introvert man, who decided to put an end to his life.
i think so too. absolutely devastating. he must have felt so lonely inside.
There's no evidence that he did that.
